  1. I think you are making a mistake here. First off, you want to find out if it's genuine as soon as possible. Let CGC grade it first. They will give you notes about the condition of the book. If it's genuine and the notes warrant a press, then you can press it. If you spend the extra money and time to get it pressed first, and it turns out to be not genuine, you have wasted time and money.
  2. First, let's see what CGC says before trying to decide what venue to list your '8.0' . I'm sorry but I don't think the book will be anywhere near an 8.0 . You have a book length vertical crease. That alone puts you at 5.5. Next you have more long creases, visible on the Back cover. The upper right of the Front cover has something going on. I think you can get a 5.0 but I also think it may be a little lower. Plus you have the risk of married centerfold, stains we are not seeing, trimming. Buying raw books of this caliber is risky. I always ask myself why didn't the seller send it in ? I wish you luck.
  3. I think the moral of this whole thread is, don't buy comics on E-Bay, either raw or slabbed. The raws are overgraded and the slabbed are overpriced.
  4. You are probably right = you are not getting what you paid for.
  5. Because of the camera flash glare, it's difficult to ascertain what's actually there and what's a flash. However, if I think I see what you are referring to it is a large tear. If CGC sees this same tear on all copies, it will sometimes get a 'bindery' pass. To me, a flaw is a flaw, a tear is a tear, and this is not a 9.8 . I would not be happy with this book. If all copies have the tear, then why not simply own it raw ? Why pay a premium for a 9.8 with obvious flaws ?
  6. I just looked up the definition of a quick press on the CGC website.... For expediency, QuickPress comics only pass through the process once; any remaining defects will not be further treated as they normally would during the full pressing process. The best candidates for QuickPress tend to be high-grade moderns, which exhibit very few flaws to remove, and mid to low-grade books that have a large number of pressable defects. The QuickPress service is also ideal for raw comics to enhance their appearance in hand. To maintain the low cost and speed of this tier, CCS does not offer the Screening service for QuickPress
  7. That's the problem, different pressers have different definitions of a quick press. There was another thread talking about the differences and one Boardie said 'I called in advance and asked about the differences. I was told a quick press is once thru and that's it. Full press may include additional passes and some hand work if necessary.' Based on that definition, I wouldn't bother with a quick press.
  8. I don't want to get in to a pressing debate but from what I have seen and heard, a quick press doesn't do much. I once had a local do a quick press on my book. It looked good, got rid of a minor fold, when it came off the press. By the time I got it home and opened it up the fold was back. I'm sure different pressing services have different definitions of a quick press but in my case the book was pressed and removed while still hot, not allowed to cool down in the press. From what I have been told, a good press takes a while. A good presser will wait to see if the memory comes back and, if so, press it again. BY definition, I am assuming a quick press means exactly that, in and out of the press quickly. I would not want to chance a quick press when a grader won't see it for a month. Cooked food tastes better while it is still hot.
  9. I don't understand the point of a quick press. Per the above, CGC sees your books nearly a month after the quick press. By that time, the effects of a quick press will probably have worn off. A fresh Quick pressed book needs to get into the hands of CGC quickly. If the book needs it, get the full press service, if it doesn't don't bother with pressing at all.
  10. War comics, as a genre, are currently not that popular right now. I think they had a nice run about 10 years ago but not so much now. The keys and cool covers are still desirable and still expensive. However, strictly as an investment, I wouldn't buy it.
  11. Nice catch. It does not appear to be the same comic . However, the second pic was taken at an angle and maybe that caused an optical illusion.
  12. ???? Looks pretty bad to me, goes through the whole book. I can't imagine an impact like this not leaving a crease(s).
  13. All those 9.0 sales points are very stale. The book has been trending down. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by a 'joke' bid ? I understand tracking bids but @ 610, that is not a tracking bid.
  14. I think the damage is already done. From the placement, one on each corner and the middle, I suspect someone put glue or tape to hang the book. I think there is underlying damage underneath each spot that will be there even if the glue is removed. Unless this is an AF15 or some major key, I would move on = don't bother with it.
  15. Assuming when you refer to 'cleaning' you are talking about dry cleaning, not a chemical 'wet' cleaning. A 'wet' cleaning will result in a restoration designation by CGC. A dry cleaning is merely rubbing an eraser over white 'dirty' areas of the book. I don't believe it will help all the extensive foxing going on with this book. BTW, I don't think you needed the grader's notes to see what is wrong with the book, it's pretty obvious. To be honest, I think 8.5 is a generous grade and if resubmitted you have just as good a chance to get the grade downgraded as upgraded. In summary, I would not invest any money into this book. Sorry.
  16. I rarely even look at E-Bay except to research sales data. Because of the coupon, I spent a good couple hours searching for something to buy. Everything, and I mean everything, was priced at ridiculous premiums. I think I would have needed a 50% off coupon to find something.
  17. If it arrived with a cracked case, you should either get your money back or be reimbursed for your expenses to get it reholdered. I would not contact CGC, it's not their fault. Go back directly to the seller.
  18. You should be able to get rid of that Newton on your own, no need to reholder. The previous generation of slabs allowed you to easily open up the right/left edges a bit. Take a plain white envelope or something similar(thicker than a piece of paper) and slide it in through the right edge. Move it over the Newton and it will disappear, guaranteed to work!
  19. I don't think the outer case is meant to be fully sealed around all four edges ? As long as the posts are fine, I think you are good.
  20. So you had the 901 bid ? I was at 1020 and the winner went the full 100 increment over my bid. I have a feeling his bid was a get it done 2K or something. Since it was 'only' an 8.5 I thought it would be a little more reasonable but not so. You never see White pages on that book either. I've got a couple Fantucci books and they are really nice, always having the eye appeal of a higher grade.
  21. Great looking copy ! Congrats. BTW, I love your name SeniorSurfer !
