  1. In the mid 00s I had a focus on 9.0+ DC and Marvel 52, 100 page, and Giant-Size issues. ASM #102 was always one of the easiest ones to find in HG - likely due to Spidey's popularity = big print run.
  2. The ASM 101 vs 102 price difference is due to the market focus on 1st apps - the 2nd and later appearances may get dragged along as the 1st appearance rises, but there is a healthy gap between them.

  4. Why does everyone insist on claiming McFarlane copied Adams’ etyle? McFarlane’s Infinity Inc for DC was out several months before Longshot 1 debuted. It was a cruder version of his final style, but you can still see it there. Based on that, it would be more reasonable to argue that Adams copied/was influenced by McFarlane instead.
  5. McFarlane ended up be the more prolific artist/creator, which is why younger collectors think Art Adams copies his style. This probably meant that AAdams was too slow with turning things around for regular work on better titles. He is not the first artist to have those issues. That being said, McFarlane’s artwork has held up better over the long haul than Art Adams. Adams’ work looks a bit childish compared to others IMHO.
  6. Who is interested in a boardie dinner? I know we normally just hit Coliseum Steak & Pizza close by, but if people are game to drive just a bit further I would suggest we hit Rostizado downtown instead.
  7. I guess I am in the minority, but I do not like Art Adams’ work at all. I did not care for it when I was a kid starting to buy/collect comics in the 80s and like it even less now. Based on what I have seen as a seller the past two decades at shows, his style does not resonate with newer collectors either. It is only the odd middle aged collector every couple or three shows that will ask for his stuff. I have heard comments that his stuff looks like a bad knock off of McFarlane from young collectors digging in my $1-$2 bins who do not know better re: order or artists. I have to agree with them in the end, though.

  9. I think the better way of looking at it is which books would you readily pay full overstreet in NM- 9.2 for when making the list. I have not seen the new guide yet as it is sitting in my file, but my guess is that MS 5 and WWBN 32 have more enticing guide values than IM 55.
  10. My guess was wax based on how it looked in the light, but it was hard to tell since it was lightly done - they tried to wipe off as much of the evidence after the fact as they could. The seller then denied doing it and putting the blame on wherever he bought them from in the 80s or 90s, but when every book we saw had the same type of color touch then I get suspicious. At least he refunded the people that asked for one based on the undisclosed resto in the end. Sadly, most buyers walked away unaware of the resto they had in hand.
  11. So, what you're saying is that certification works and that all of the books should have been graded. Not directly, but it would definitely have helped with the resto detection (and that is the reason the seller did not grade them). I was responding to Comicwiz's observation re: undisclosed restoration being common and most people not knowing how to spot it. We detected the weird spots when some of the books came to our booth, and with Joe we were able to verify what the seller/whoever he got the books from was using crayon. They actually did a good enough job that it was hard to pick up unless you looked carefully for it.
  12. Comics will not die, they will just go to a different medium. All media in print form is trending this way as today's youth read books on tablets, but consume much more information and media visually online (e.g. Youtube). I expect this to continue as each future generation is more digital than the last.

Last year at the Calgary Expo there was a BC based seller that had a bunch of nice GA books that he was not disclosing resto on (the light color touch with a crayon was tough to spot unless you know what to look for). Supposedly he claimed that he was unaware of it, but when all of the books that I saw were restored, it was evident that he either did it himself or bought them restored. Regardless, there was a feeding frenzy for the books as most of the people that purchased them were unaware and paid full unrestored value.

  15. The network of nondisclosure. Same for me, except for the occasional comic that has the tell-tale stigmata of pressing left behind. I just assume that everything I buy has been pressed at least once and do not worry about it. As long as I can get a properly centred copy with W pages in the grade I am looking for then I am happy.

  17. I am thinking of CGC 9.4 prices for the list. WWBN 32 should already be on there (higher than ASM 129 as well), and SME 15 may hit the list soon as well. Depending on what DC does with Darkseid, JO #134 could break the top 25 list in the near future. It is on the bubble right now, unless it has pulled back recently (I have been outbid on the last two I was chasing), and I would put it there ahead of ASW #10 (Jonah who?). Value-wise, Tec #400 should also be there ahead of Batman #232. Then there are a few other 1980 Whitman variants that fetch big $$$ as well (although I am not sure if they top $1900 in CGC 9.4). A couple of CDN newsstand editions may hit the mark in a year or two as well, depending on the BA cut off date. If I think about it further I am sure there are a few other books I am missing as well.
  18. What are we using as the time period for the BA (1970 - ????)? There are some Whitman variants that are fetching interesting prices now.
  19. I am looking at this list from a value perspective rather than character significance perspective. IM #55 has dropped decently since Endgame, and will be surpassed by other titles in short order (it is already worth less than other books listed below it). If the list is based on prices, which it basically has been in the past, then I can see it sliding out next year.

  22. $5,089 one day left. Nice. I am kicking myself extra hard right now for not snagging either of the TOD #10 CGC 9.8 or CGC 9.6 copies on Clink last October or November. I had the funds available and was willing to outbid the prices they fetched, but I thought there would be better deals this year since movie/TV rumors had fizzled. I had to settle for a couple of 9.4s instead.
  23. The biggest jump in value % wise tends to happen with the first movie. After that, it depends on the book. I think Ms. Marvel #1, not being the 1st appearance and being relatively common, will behave more like Copper and Modern books = big jump first movie, then pull back a bit post movie, followed by more measured price gains going forward.
  24. That is still one of the best Spidey storylines ever. I take it people are speculating now re: future movie appearance?
