  1. It did get up a bit higher pricewise than I was hoping, but that cover to Supes #317 is one of my favorites.
  2. Damnit - I was outbid on all of the lots from your Dad's collection that I was bidding on tonight. I really wanted that Superman #304-319 run in VF/NM, but foolishly forgot to check in during the last minute with a higher reserve bid.
  3. Definitely. I missed out on a nice group of Gil Kane OA a few years back when I grabbed a nice OO comic collection. The owner needed $$$ in the late 90s and received an offer on the artwork that he could not refuse. A lot of it was sketches or commissions, but there were a couple of nice GL pages and a cover or two that I can't recall (non-GL).
  4. Ask Roy. He said most were bought by a collector that flew in just for the GL run. Who is spunky? PM me anybody. What info do you have to trade me for this info? I`m serious. If it`s not regarding something that`s common knowledge, like "who`s the Dentist," then information is always a 2-way street. How can I possibly know what you want to know? If you know of anyone with HG early SA Legion of Superhero appearances that is looking to sell........ (thumbs u
  5. Ask Roy. He said most were bought by a collector that flew in just for the GL run.
  6. When spunkydo puts his collection up for sale? - which auction house has not tried to contact him recently? They never tried to contact me when I had a lot of the books. From what I hear, they put out a call for SC #22s in August. Amazing what a movie announcement can do to change their perspective on things!
  7. Damnit. Now that I have looked at the Registry I have the urge to start buying more to compete.
  8. When spunkydo puts his collection up for sale? I wonder if he is planning on finishing up his run now that GL books are so $$$, especially the top census ones that he seems to be collecting. If not, it's a good time now to cash in on huge profits? I think that we still have a bit of time before the big demand spike on the regular GL series. Showcase #22 has really taken off, but outside of GL #1 and GL #7 (which has always carried a premium in mid to high grade since it is so tough to find) the early SA issues have not really jumped. Give it another year or so before this happens since the movie hype will be starting in full force AND the lack of supply will become even more apparent. If you look at the reported numbers at www.comichron.com, GL was a relatively weak seller in the 1960-1962 period topping out at 240 - 250K in total paid monthly circulation. This would be a blockbuster today, but back then the top titles were doing 500K to 1 million copies (Disney books). It appears that GL peaked in 1965 at ~275K copies, and dropped from there. As a result, there are not a lot of copies to start with relative to other titles at that time.
  9. So, how long until we see another higher grade GL run like the Mound City auction?
  10. Don't forget the stellar 4th World line of drek as well. ...must...not...launch...flame...war...in...own...thread... Sorry.
  11. Fixed that for you. The title was still a good read after Byrne left, just not as aesthetically pleasing. (thumbs u
  12. DC did not know what their sales figures were for a while? Sounds like the original dot.com business plan where sales did not matter.
  13. Both, but more due to the increasing popularity of Green Lantern, especially amogst Marvel collectors that branch out into DC.
  14. If you are doing a top 5 for SA books based on character popularity now, I would put it as: AF 15 FF 1 TOS 39 X-Men 1 SC 22 Hulk #1 is tough as nails in HG, but the character is not that hot of a property right now. Historically, SC #4 is more important that SC #22, but the Flash has been a stagnant character for a long time. I know way more GL collectors that Flash collectors, especially amongst former Marvel zombie/fanboys like myself. I would not be surprised if SC #22 surpasses SC #4 value wise eventually either if the GL movie is a hit like some are predicting, just like AF #15 has jumped past FF #1. SC #4 will always be an important book, but in the end it is the strength of the characters that will drive values and I see more potential for the GL franchise than for Flash.
  15. Yes, and I was shocked to see the prices that were paid for 8.0 and 8.5 copies of #15 and #18 in the Mound City auction. FWIW, there is a CGC 9.0 OW copy of #15 available right now on a major dealer website for only $400, which is what the Mound City 8.0 went for. They also had a 9.0 #15 W and 9.0 #18 OW (only $295 - the Mound City 8.5 went for $600) that are both listed with a sale pending.
  16. Well, 4.0 copies with cream/off white pages are valued $1700-2000. Since this copy has off-white pages, I think it should be valued $2000-2200. But if it sells for above that, then it would be a record price. Showcase 22 has become the second most valuable DC Silver Age in terms of recent sales of 8.0 and under. (thumbs u I'm not saying that this price is aggressively out of whack (high, but not outrageously so) relative to recent sales; rather, I'm saying I outwardly have to wonder if this can continue upwards and onwards undeterred. In terms of selling price over the last year, we're close to tripling the sale price of VGs and up. The question I'm asking is, when does the correction come, and how drastic is it? Look at the history of other books with the same sudden run up.... TOS 39 , AF 15, Avengers 1 etc. I don't see any major correction on these books. You're fooling yourself if you think SC 22 will have a drastic correction. All of these books have pulled back a bit, though, and you can buy Avengers #1 for close to the pre-run up price now. If SC #22 follows past patterns, the big jump has occurred and will be followed by a lull, then a slower price gain closer to the movie, followed by a small pullback/correction afterwards. If the movie bombs, then it might fall further. Look at SC #4, for example. How easy is that book to move at guide price?
  17. I think that was a terrific price for the 8.0 Mound Copy. If you read this thread around late August and early September (if I recall correctly), I have predicted the Mound Copy to sell around $15k-20k. There were a lot of pessimism of this speculative price, but it still ended selling at almost 20k. This is the second highest auction price for a SC22. I believe many Green Lantern collectors were waiting out to purchase a 9.2 and 9.4 copies of SC22, but it still has not turned up and they are left with a missing piece to their collections. It's like owning a run of high grade Amazing Spiderman, but missing a high grade AF15. (thumbs u I did not mean to say that it was a bad price by any means, but an outrageous price in my books would have been $25K - $30K. If the book was a nicer copy with pressing potential it probably would have hit that (or a bit higher), I guess.
  18. We have likely plateaued pricewise for the time being, even in 6.0+ grades, until the Heritage 9.0 copy sets a new price barometer. The Mound City 8.0 did okay, but not outrageous. The big gains have likely already been made on this book, but there should be a small spike again closer to the movie. It will be interesting to see how many copies come onto the market then and how it will affect prices. Right now it looks like the action is shifting to early GL issues, especially #7, #16, and the first two or three Sinestro covers (#9, #15, and #18). It will be interesting to see how GL #5 does when they cast Hector Hammond. You can still snag nice looking copies for relatively cheap prices.
  19. Wow, possibly 9.2 too! my offer was shot down like bambi on the first day of hunting season Up the offer, then. Rick knows what the right price to pay and not to pay. You can't pay too much for a B&B 28. showcase22gr1959 and kimik, am I doing it right? No. Wait for Rick and I to acquire a few copies and we will show you how it's done. (thumbs u
  20. Wow, possibly 9.2 too! my offer was shot down like bambi on the first day of hunting season Up the offer, then.
  21. Ryan, I should point out it's all a bit relative. For instance, the #6 went for over 10X Guide, so it's not like it went for peanuts. But compared to what the 9.4 copy went for, it seems disappointing. On the other hand, in seeing the scans (including the raw scans), it should never have been a 9.6 in the first place, and maybe not even a 9.4, so by that token it went for a very strong price. The various estimates I heard from other collectors based on the raw scan, before it came back from CGC, were mostly 9.0 with 9.2 as the absolute highest. Interesting. Most of us felt the same way about the "8.0" Showcase #22 and it did not generate a mind blowing price either. There were imPRESSive prices on the "upgradeable" books, but I guess if a book looked soft the dealers/knowledgeable bidders present did not chase it.
  22. Thanks, Tim. So, outside of a couple of books the prices were not that hot. I guess the GL run was the big one for higher prices as far as the superhero DCs were concerned then. The prices on some of the early SA Flash issues looked decent as well.
  23. Thanks...I hope I was not going against you. I've been looking the last year for a descent copy. I just felt the 7.0+ is where it is scarce to find in high grade. No, I was not bidding on it. Have to keep bigger purhcases to a minimum for probably the next month......... (thumbs u
