Thanks @Black_Adam ! I think there are some treasures left in here for sure, and I've got some nice stuff coming up in the morning. The customs thing bums me out, because I love my Boardies to the North (and South, and across the water!) and would love to sell to all of ya. But these particular books make me kind antsy about international shipping.

Yeah I picked up some comics in the US once including the issue of Cherry with the gerbil on the cover and I was sure THAT would be the one comic the customs agents decided to take a look at. Luckily they didn't and it is now safely squirreled away in my collection. :cloud9:

I recently received three slabs from cgc, I had "reholdered", rubber banded together with just a bit of bubble wrap not secured to the books at all. I was surprised, given that I sent the books in for reholder (on my dime) because they had cracked in shipment from ebay...go figure. With 175+ books currently submitted for grading, I am a bit nervous and holding off submitting anything else.

All of my experiences with SCS in regards to CGC shipments have involved smaller groups of books (six or less) and, I believe, have been directly related to the poor packaging practices in their shipping department. Larger shipments (say 12 slabs or more) are placed upright in a carton with 1" thick cardboard buffers on all six sides and bubble wrap wedged into any remaining gap to prevent movement during transit. Smaller shipments are packed as previously described - with no protection in place to prevent excessive movement during transit, almost always a cause of SCS. My only guess is that whoever approved this shipping method at CGC mistakenly believes the cases alone will prevent the comics from any damage during shipment?

Which is a shame, because in my experience most smaller shipments involve higher value books while bulk shipments have almost always been graded at the lowest tier.

I used to open up many of my slabs but with the new slab design it is very difficult, so not so much anymore. Slabbed books take up a lot of storage room. If I have a keeper book, I open it up and enjoy it in mylar. I keep the label with it. It doesn't seem to make a difference in valuation = collectors will pay slabbed prices for deslabbed books with the label. As mentioned above, if I see SCS going on I like to get it out of the slab immediately. It only gets worse in the slab.

I can't speak for other collectors but, all things being equal, I would sooner buy a slabbed book than one that has been deslabbed with the label. If it was a boardie or a reputable online dealer (i.e. Worldwide, who often offer deslabbed comics) I would take a very close look to make sure no damage occurred during the deslabbing process - which can be tricky if you don't know what you are doing or aren't careful - and would also be looking for signs of SCS, as mentioned, a frequent reason for deslabbing.

As far as eBay goes, I wouldn't touch a deslabbed comic offered there with a ten foot pole. Too easy to mix and match comics/labels - it would be easy for a swindler there to match a 9.0 high value book with resto with a 9.0 blue label for the same issue.

For me, a significant part of the value of CGC grading is the tamper proof case. Tampering with the case reduces that value for me.

Nice List. Good Work. So is this a list of most all Marvel Silver Age Comics which sell for at least 1K in 8.0?

I don't think Sub-Mariner 1 sells for quite that much however. Perhaps Silver Surfer 4 would be an appropriate replacement? Or JIM 89?

Hey, good catch on the Sub-Mariner, his 1st issue has been rising lately but not near that high (not sure where I got that figure). Consider him officially cut loose!

And while the other two comics are both worthy candidates neither has cracked the $1k mark (yet). List updated!

Charlton just had a tough time ever getting a title with a cast of characters to survive. I guess some of the monster books had a host, but weren't the war books all solo stories? Their tv show comics failed and even stuff like e-man, which was not bad, failed. I think they had odd distribution? We'd get them on a road trip in the middle of nowhere, but I never saw them on a newsstand (and most still had comics when I was young)

Yeah, Charlton War always just seemed to be a collection of whatever the editors could slap together each month (no anchor characters ie. Sgt. Rock, Unknown Soldier, etc.). You also had to beware of reprints which were quite common in the titles.

Agree! Charlton war books of this era get a really bad rap - they have a different flavour than DC war from the Bronze Age, but they have many charms!

A few years back, I was fortunate to purchase VF run of all the Charlton war books from about 1969-81. I’ll try and post some of the covers soon. Some of them are truly spectacular.

    Shep

Growing up in the 70s, I'm also a fan of the Bronze Age Charlton War (and other titles) which are very, very affordable though sometimes hard to find in decent grade mainly due to low supply and even lower demand. But with lazy spell checking like this - on a cover to boot - it's not hard to see why the company was doomed to demolition...

Thank you very much for the kind words -- but my 9.4 run generally goes back to a certain point (varies by title) and then it goes down to more affordable grades.  The only major Marvel title for which I have a true 9.4 run would be Daredevil -- just a few more issues to go and I'll have #1-109 complete.  But that's because Daredevil is easily the most affordable title of the bunch.

For JIM, I *just* picked up a 7.0 of #83 and I can now say I have a complete run of #83-125 with several issues I'd still like to upgrade.  My dream is to someday own a 9.0 of #83, but I would also consider upgrading to 8.0 along the way.  :whee:

Ironically, assuming the CGC 7.0 Journey into Mystery #83 was the one from the current Comiclink featured auction, the friend I created this list for was the under bidder!

  8. I've just started watching this on Netflix and am really enjoying it. Far darker than I expected, similar to what Riverdale did with Archie I guess, and almost has a sort of Watchmen (the movie) vibe to it. Starfire is HOT (not just literally) and Minka Kelly as Dove... :x
