  1. As mentioned, I received a shipment of 25 slabs today (Bronze, Copper and a few Modern). All of the slabs were the standard version with the inner well; none of them were missing the well like the Saga @jsilverjanet received. For those interested in such things:

The shipment was delivered by FedEx. Normal wear to the outside of the shipping carton (it must weigh 40 lbs) and zero damage to the slabs inside. None of the comics showed signs of SCS.

Newton Rings: On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being perfect and 10 resembling the Exxon Valdez disaster I'd say the majority of the slabs are in the 3-4 range. They all have Newton Rings to some extent, usually in a 1-2 inch area in the dead center of the slab, but only one is bad enough that I will be contacting CGC to request having it reholdered (it's a definite 10 on the Newton Ring scale).

The cases they are using now are still nowhere near perfect but appear to be an improvement over some other recent arrivals. One thing that puzzles me: I don't think I've ever noticed a Newton Ring on the back of a slab, only the front face. Can't they just modify the slabs so the contacting plastics issue causing the Newton Ring effect occurs on the opposite side? (shrug)

  2. One silver lining to the Newton ring issue is the money it's saved me from spending at the big auction houses (and here on the boards). I find myself avoiding comics in the new slabs like they have the plague (which, ironically, is kind of what the Newton rings look like) knowing I won't be happy once I have them in hand.

SHOCK SUSPENSTORIES #13 in 1.0/1.5. Classic EC featuring a Frazetta/Williamson beach story loaded with GGA. Book presents like a midgrade, but cover wrap is detached with interior archival tape discreetly sealing a full spine split. Page corners are slightly brittle, but book very supple overall, easily readable.

    $75

Mine are coming via Joeypost who does pressing for us. I don't know how he shipped them.

I would guess as soon as Joe picks them up from CGC the 14-day clock starts ticking. Might be helpful to have him check your slabs for Newton rings in the CGC lobby so he can hand them right back if necessary!

I wonder how a customer from a different country is handled. I don't even have my books yet and it is well beyond 14 days.

I'm also a Canuck. They send my books FedEx which only takes a couple of days.

  6. I was also informed by CGC that "there is a 14 day time frame for getting any corrections like this back to us." Any issues with Newton rings brought to their attention outside of that time frame will not be reholdered for free.

I was also told by the first customer service rep I contacted at CGC (immediately after receiving the slab a few months ago) that the Newton rings were not excessive. It wasn't until I kept going back to them after reading the results other boardies had with the same issue that I finally found a rep that agreed the Newton rings on my slab were excessive. Of course, that was outside the 14 day window so I am being billed by CGC for the reholdering. :tonofbricks:

perhaps art is not the right word. Maybe they look more authentic or are better parodies of the real thing? That one for sewer side squad is pretty sloppy, unless that was intended

I believe the Sewer Side Squad art was intentional, I think its a parody of the art from a current kids tv show (not sure which one - don't watch them). I only picked it for this forum because it was comic book related. For the most part the current batch of Wacky Pack artists try to imitate the original artwork from the seventies (I have two great books from Amazon that detail the origins and art of the original Wacky Packages). Here is a better example of the current sticker style (these are from the 2015 set).

    Atomic Comics #1

    1946

    $500

    Canadian edition, harder to find

Very nice shape with few flaws. Back cover corner wear. Weird stamp. Few other minor defects. Prices on eBay are up there. Here's one just as nice as any of those just a lot cheaper

The way the woman is looking out at the reader totally reminds me of the same pose on Planet #34. Cover swipe? Oh, and great comic! (thumbsu

This year, I had a goal to submit 50 books a month.  The newton rings are fairly prevalent on all books.   August is the first month I have not submitted books.  I have more than 100 set aside for submission, but keep waiting on a resolution to the newton rings.  I looked at the competition and thought I would give them a try.  Looking at their forums, people are still waiting for their books back from March/April submissions.  So my options are A) submit and accept the newton rings, B) submit to the competitor and wait 6+ months for them to return, C) dont get them graded.  At this point, I am going to just keep them and wait for a resolution.

I was also making a concentrated effort to get more comics in my personal collection slabbed as I'd really grown to like the look of the new slabs with the new CGC labels. But with the newton ring issue and complete lack of customer support from CGC I've resolved to stick to shiny crystal-clear mylars. Now I can spend all the money I've saved on more comics! :acclaim:

    And who can forget these?

I LOVED Wacky Packs as a kid. My mother, not so much - we stuck those stickers everywhere...schoolbooks, lunchboxes, walls, doors, our parakeet's birdcage. I was surprised to realize a few years ago they still make them! I bought a box on eBay and cracked it open with my friend's two sons and they went just as crazy for them as we did when we were kids. Here is a sample of the current wackiness...

I think having that dog eat my action figure is why I became so OCD about comics. I began keeping my clothes on top of my dresser so I could safely stow my comics in the drawers and my sister still remembers how, if I actually agreed to let her read one of my comics, she wasn't allowed to touch them. I would sit beside her and, when she was ready, turn the pages for her.

  12. I live in Vancouver and I'd also like to know where the good comic shops are with the big back issue selections. All the ones I know of locally carry primarily new stock, TPBs, toys and collectible card games. Any back issue selection is mainly moderns and if they do have anything bronze/silver (in decent condition) they are usually locked away and almost an afterthought in an old display case in some forgotten corner of the store.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but the comic stores we have now are nothing like the ones I remember growing up in the early eighties...

Oh, and enjoy the trip! It's one I've always wanted to make, cross-country, ocean to ocean!
