  1. I've used these Gemini mailers and haven't had any issues. I always secure the comics (4 or less preferably so I can ship First Class - less than $5) inside a magazine sized comic bag with backing boards to keep them tight together and then use packing tape to secure the bundle to the interior insert of the mailer so it can't shift inside the package. Once these mailers are wrapped up with lots of packing tape they're plenty stiff.

Having also received these mailers, however, they are only good if the sender has secured the comic to keep it from bouncing around inside. If not, sticking the mailer inside a flat-rate envelope or box isn't going to make any difference - the comic will arrive damaged.

  2. I also think if Stan Lee knew there was a thread on characters he created that missed the mark he'd be the first wanting to chime in (and I bet he'd have a longer list than the rest of us). No one is harder on their own work than a writer and one who self-admittedly wrote most of his stories in one sitting is bound to have a few strikeouts. How many comic stories did he write? It must have been thousands. Needless to say, his home runs more than made up for his misses.

Anyway, back to the topic, I don't think any of his heroes missed the mark for me but some of his early Silver-Age villains of the week sure did (IMHO). I remember dreading any stories with carnival villains (the Ringmaster, CIrcus of Crime, etc though I did like the woman with the snake - Princess Python?). Also not a big fan of Plantman or the Porcupine.

    Excelsior!

I haven't seen a Cherry Mini on Ebay in over 2 years. What gives?

Have you checked the porn Adult listings? I've heard rumors that's where the good stuff (CGC-graded Cherry comics, I mean) is...

Is it possible that there is no quality control for newton rings and that they are only 'fixing' these for customers (ie the squeaky wheel minority) that complain?

If I was going to speculate, based on businesses I've been involved with at a production level, I would bet that the newton ring issue was noticed by QC but a decision was made at a higher level to continue using the materials creating the problem as it is far more cost effective to offer free reholdering to the customers who come back and complain than it is to scrap all that material and/or face huge delays in production while waiting for replacement supply.

If what you're saying is true, then sales tax should make a noticeable dent in the hammer prices on books across the board.  So the question then (assuming these sites will use each buyer's local state sales tax) will be whether bidders in low-tax states will have a demonstrable advantage in winning auctions.

Oh, it's true. The following is quoted from Comiclink's Terms and Conditions:

    1. Lots are subject to all applicable state and local taxes, unless properly completed resale certificates are on file with ComicLink. User agrees to pay ComicLink the actual amount of tax due in the event that sales tax is not properly collected. The appropriate sales tax exemption form or certificate must be on file at and verified by ComicLink five (5) days prior to the close of an auction or tax must be paid; only if such form or certificate is received by ComicLink within four (4) days after the Auction can a refund of tax paid be made. Lots from different Auctions may not be aggregated for sales tax purposes. Sales tax is currently charged for shipments made to the following states: IL, MD, ME, MI, MN, NJ, WA, WI.

So if you are bidding from the eight states listed, you will have to pay more if you want to win than those bidding from other locales.

  6. Sales Tax will definitely be putting a damper on any future Comiclink wins I'd hoped to post here. Went to checkout my most recent win and found out I'm now being charged 7.9% WA sales tax on any shipments sent to my mailbox in Point Roberts (same as with Heritage). The whole reason I'd set up the mailbox was to try to avoid Comiclink's $70 shipping charge to Canada. I was paying $50 less for 1-3 comics to my mailbox, but the sales tax added on basically blows that option out of the water. I hear the sales tax will soon be applied to all eBay wins also. :sorry:
