But unless I'm reading this wrong, that's how eBay is supposed to work. If the current winning bid was $856, that bidder could have bid all the way up to $866 - eBay will only reflect the max winning bid. So unless some one comes in and bids higher than $856, the current high bidder wins at the current leading bid (even though their max could be higher). So the $856 bidder likely set a max bid higher, but your snipe bid was just enough to outbid their max...
Ah k that’s fair, but since the increment is $10, wouldn’t their bid if it was over $856 trigger my $866.01 high bid instead of $866? So maybe their high bid was just $856 and because the increment is $10 it only pushed my max to $866? Crazy how our high bid was so close, but I guess it’s reasonable that our math was similar.
Thanks for the input! Figured it wasn’t likely foul play since that probably wouldn’t work against a sniping service, just always weird when the max bid on a snipe hits almost exactly. I was comfortable with my max, so not really all that bad.

Not sure where else to post about this, but I'm curious for the community's opinion on this:
Just won an eBay auction for an expensive book, but I'm a little suspicious of the way the auction ended. Basically, I won the auction with a bid of $866 when my max was $866.01...but I used a sniping service so the bid went in like 3 seconds before the auction ended. Only one other bidder bid anywhere close to that, and it was $856. This was a private listing as well. I don't honestly know how someone could shill against a sniped bid, but it feels incredibly suspicious to me. Anyone know how this could be done? Or if it could be done? Or is it just the freak case where someone legitimately bid just below me (it said the bid went in at the same time as mine, indicating it was a snipe as well...just feels odd it was so specific and so close to my max...). I'd thought sniping eliminated the chance of getting shilled, but maybe I was wrong. Would love to hear thoughts on this. Maybe I'm just paranoid lol...

Closest I’ve come to placing, despite a disastrous 12 point round 2. 7 points in the other three rounds and 10 bullseyes total (my most yet I think).

Based on results of the survey I am preparing updated cumulative top 50 rankings through contest #10 now, and will release the results shortly.
@CGC Mike - As part of my updates, I also update the "Rookie of the Year" (which I should probably call "Top Rookie" since we have 4 contests per year). To that end: I am seeing what appears to be a new entrant named @Nschenks in contest #10, however, I see that there was an Nsschenks that participated in 3 prior contests. Do you know if that is the same boardie?
Is there a subforum that provides name changes that you can point me to? If so, then maybe I can reference that in order to better keep all cumulative rankings together for a given participant across all of their usernames. Presumably not too many name changes, so probably not a big deal.
Hi yes that’s me! Just adjusted my username a few weeks ago.

Nearly missed the crease as well but luckily caught it last second.
4 bulls on the first 4 books but had the Y at 9.4 for 2 points to tie my first round for the best. Probably not good enough to place, but if I throw out my disastrous round 2, I got 7 points in three rounds lol. Good contest!

Grades in--not feeling super confident about this round. Basically need 5 bulls to have a chance after my 12 point second round lol.
-
3 points and 2 bulls in this redemption round (7.5 for SW8, 9.0 on the Cap, and 7.5 on the Flash). Any chance we can scrap the worst round? Lol I’d still be in this maybe if not for my utter tank job in round 2…

Got absolutely roasted this round. Very confused by some of the grades tbh. No mention of the stain on the back of Strange Tales? 9.2 with corner wear, stress lines and “light” foxing on JLA? Unmentioned corner bend on the Spotlight 9.6? Lot of head-scratchers imo. And here I thought I was getting pretty good at grading 7.5+ books…

According to the CGC Grading Guide foxing is allowed up to 9.8
Is this true? CGC 9.8's can have minor foxing?

Woo 3 bulls and 2 points total (swapped the grades for Frankenstein’s Monster and Superman)—my best round ever! But higher grade bronze/copper are what I primarily deal with so it’s really only downhill from here once we go golden and mid-low grade…
Was back and forth on the Showcase and that stain but ultimately decided it was more likely light foxing or weird distro ink than some other stain considering how nice the book looked otherwise. CGC is pretty lenient on light foxing right now.

Anyone experiencing slowdown since WonderCon? I just had two Modern (one Slow one FT) shipments fly through the process in 6 and 8 days respectively, but a 1-book HV I submitted recently is on day 5 of TAT and still on SFG. Not complaining, just curious if anyone else is experiencing a slowdown (or has had any recent High Value shipments).

8 Book Slow Boat Modern:
- Delivered: 3/20/24
- Received and SFG: 3/22/24
- GEI: 3/28/24
-G/QC and Shipped: 3/29/24 6 days total (!)
*Grades all within expected range: 5 were what I thought, 1 a grade higher than I thought and 2 a grade lower than I thought; I know CGC gets a lot of s**t for inconsistency, but in my dozen odd submissions over the last few years, I've only had a few surprise grades. Maybe SSS and obviously CGC's own standards/parameters fluctuate a bit and maybe aren't on par with some of the tougher graders here, but I feel like they are pretty good at staying consistent within those standards for the most part, especially considering the volume of books they have to grade and the speed at which they have to grade them

Very curious how much faster the FT shipment goes through the process, considering the TAT times are already pretty fast right now for modern... $12 extra for only 2-3 days faster seems maybe not worth it. Not complaining about the times in general though! Gotta enjoy before Con season clogs the system8 Book Slow Boat Modern:

Mostly just curious how y’all would deduct the slight crease by the middle/top spine on the back cover (hard to make out in the photos but it’s there). It’s a pretty common production defect for this book, though this is honestly one of the cleaner copies I’ve seen. The crease is about 1.5-2 inches and possibly partially color breaking.
Also, would this even be worth pressing (assuming I used an experienced professional presser who knows how to press these thick cardstock covers)? Or would it be better just to leave as is?
Really not sure how hard CGC hits this defect considering it’s on nearly every copy I’ve seen.
Thanks for looking!
*NOTE: what looks like color rub or a stain to the top right of spidey in the upper right box of the front cover is actually just stray ink from printing and part of the book.

Unfortunately it was a private listing, so I can’t check bid info or know how many times someone bid. But the time was the exact same, so figured it was likely a snipe (most big items end with sniped bids).
Guess we had the same math lol. Always funny when that happens. Appreciate the feedback though!
