  1. It's been a while since I looked at mine, but IIRC this wasn't WWII related. Just your run-of-the-mill sadist.
  2. Here it is: I can see it going either way. Prisoners aren't in uniform, but the main character is wearing pretty fancy boots for a concentration camp survivor. I'd probably go with POW uprising or resistance fighters in prison. And I agree, Cap 46 is the only one that truly noted the atrocities associated with the Holocaust. There ya go. I'll have to dig mine out and see if the cover goes with the story. The caption makes it seem as though that's Bill Barnes socking the Nazi.
  3. Well ... CA 46 came out in April 45. Auschwitz was liberated in January 45 and VE day was in early May 1945. So it might really have been more a matter of the limited time between the truth of the Holocaust becoming public knowledge (1/45) and the end of the war in Germany (5/45). I've had that discussion with others. Seems like the atrocities were more well known than the media would have let on. It may just be the fact that showing those events was not deemed appropriate for kids comics.
  4. Some like to call Air Ace 2.1 a concentration camp cover, although it strikes me more as a POW camp. Doesn't look like I have a scan of my copy. But we're talking about the holocaust really, and as Mark said it's two different things. To my knowledge, Captain America 46 is the only, the ONLY book to acknowledge what was going on with the holocaust on the cover. Pretty impressive.
  5. Then there's this one from Men's Adventures 24.
  6. I am sure you mean Atrocity Story from Battlefield # 2 in particular Pages 5 and 6 - There is another one as well ... but it's escaping me at the moment. I'll post the info once I remember it. It's a rare day when I beat Scrooge on Atlas, but...
  7. None of that looks like Severin's work. John and Joe were good friends and would joke around with each sometimes adding elements to the other's artwork to have fun with Stan Lee. My eyes tell me that Joe drew that cover and put John's initials on the cufflink. John was talented enough that perhaps he imitated Joe's style but I would want to see confirmation from records or from John before I would be confident that was true. I agree that it looks nothing like Severin. I'm not good enough to say that it's Maneely or Burgos or whoever, but the style is just not Severin. Possibly layouts/pencils?
  8. Very cool Everett! Incredible. Just incredible. The 18 is a book I'd love to get my hands on some day. That creepy guy in the foreground is almost at a Matt Fox-weirdness level.
  9. Spellbound, as a whole, is one of the better Atlas series for great covers.
  10. That's my suspicion, but nothing to confirm it. He was selling some books that were very similar to some Jortner had on Ebay.
  11. I love me some Fox books, especially my Mystery Men 10 (never been so thankful to hear the words "I'd like to return this"), but Weird 2 is probably at the top of my list. Tough as nails to find in any shape. Great book. You should send it to me and see if I say that. You never know, you might just get lucky twice!
  12. Love it. One of the classics. I was giddy to upgrade this one recently.
  13. My copy of Weird 2 has the same 'K' as your MM9, and I've seen it on another Weird 2. I wonder if it has something to do with a common distributor source.
  14. Wonderful Russ - if/when the time comes, Let's make it MLJ appreciation day. I got this in (from a different source)...I regretfully passed on the Church copy many a year ago, so it's nice to finally get any copy in (even lower grade). Dibs!!! (seriously)
  15. I've gotta stick up for the Atlas books here. When it comes to pre-code, I'd rank Atlas above DC. Seems like every issue had something pretty spectacular. Post-code, they really suffered and it was often bad enough that even a Heath or Severin cover couldn't salvage it. But pre-code... that's good stuff.
  16. Yes, GIC 138 is the first Losers, OFF 123 is the first Losers in that run, where they went on to continuity. Sort of like AAMOW 67 is the first Gunner & Sarge, then OFF 45 is the first G&S in the title in which they went on to star. Clear as mud?
