  1. CGC and the Internet have definitively increased the population of one segment of the collecting market--high grade collectors. If it wasn't so easy to get a complete collection of lower-grade books via eBay and dealer sites, I would have never gravitated to high grade so quickly, or perhaps ever. And even if I had started collecting high grade with no Internet to push me towards it, if certification wasn't around, undisclosed additive restoration could have forced me right back out of high grade years ago.

Pre-CGC, guys hunting through longboxes for 9.6 and 9.8 copies were as rare as the chupacabra, .

    :hi:

You're absolutely right, back then, a "what would end up to be" an 8.0 was the same thing as a "what would end up to be" 9.8, and sold for the same amount, unless it was being sold by a VERY savvy seller, and then it was much, much more expensive,. Of course, not even the super anal high grade collectors like me could conceive of what was to come. We just picked out "the very best we could find." The number of people who rejected "what would become 9.0 or lower" books in the 90's? What, maybe 100?

And of those, how many could actually afford to hunt out these copies in Silver and earlier? 10? 15? 20? Certainly not me.

High grade collectors, though, form a tiny, tiny niche segment of an already wildly shrunken market, so while that market has definitely been birthed and wildly grown by the advent of CGC, it's still just a tiny part of an already small market to begin with.

Pre CGC and even before I started to take notice of CGC in its early years everything that was 9.2 or better I simply called near mint. I often have trouble picking out what a 9.4 (NM) would be now because to me thats what 9.6 and 9.8's used to be. I'm often surprised at the little defects that some 9.4 CGC's have.

  2. But I think there is no question that there are more back issue collectors today than there was before Ebay and CGC... has to be... there's too much more money in play today vs ten years ago...

If you're making the comparison with '98-'99, perhaps...perhaps not. (shrug)

Any other time period? Not a chance. Late 80s and early 90s, there were LCSs absolutely everywhere...and all of them stocked 1,000s & 1,000s & 1,000s of back issues. Hell, a good proportion of their income was generated this way.

These days? Try to find a LCS. Try to find one with back issues. :(

The closet CS to my house only has back issues from the last year or two. They barely even have comics in the store. They are more of a RPG and models shop than a comic shop. There are maybe two shops in Vancouver with decent back issues and one on the outskirts. One other shop has more back issues than most stores but the area they are kept is impossible to access because it is covered in toys and other .

  3. How many posts have we seen where a buyer (or seller) has outed the other party due to a bad transaction (from whatever site?) (shrug)

I agree that if a transaction takes place on eBay and the seller did not advertise in the eBay thread on the selling forum then the seller should NOT be placed on the board probation list.

I do appreciate, however, when anyone who has had a questionable experience with a buyer or seller posts their experience in general. Perhaps this is where this should have gone.

    100%

I totally disagree 100%. You're basically saying I could take peoples money on ebay without ever shipping and come on here and sell books with no problems. (I'm not saying Lbjarm took the money and ran btw)

I just don't understand how you could have dealings on ebay or wherever else, screw someone over than come on here and sell as if nothing happened.

I think Count mentioned Robojobo a couple posts back. I guess he could just come on here and start selling stuff by your logic.

What some folks do not understand or want to understand is that, AS THE PROBATION LIST STANDS NOW, it is for Forum Sales only. To quote for the umteenth time The following Board Members are currently on "Probation" for failure to complete a Marketplace Forum transaction in good faith after one month's time.

Now if someone wants to track a list of complaints about things like like board members' ebay transactions gone bad, that is fine. But that is not what the PROBATION list is for.

    fair enough

  5. Are you refering to an e-bay transaction that has already shipped???? How can someone be put on probation for something unrelated to the Sales Forum?

Yes, I do take fault for being a slacker in the shipping department, but I threw in $50 worth of Freebies..and now I'm getting faulted :sorry:

That's why I wont ship to Canada or International for that matter. Nothing but problems. :(

Lazy, yes, a little irresponsible for not getting it shipped on time, yes A thieft however, I am not.

(shrug) What does shipping to Canada have to do with it. I'm sure if it took you over a month to ship to an American they wouldn't be happy either.

lol This is comical. $50 worth of freebies that haven't arrived (shrug) ..and now I'm getting faulted :roflmao:

I don't think anyone here is calling you a thief either. Lazy, YES.

Hopefully you guys work it out once the stuff arrives. (thumbs u

  6. No, I have scans of it outside of the slab that show sharp corners. As I said previously it has all sharp corners and also the inside is untouched. This book has never been read as I have several of them. Don't take my word for it, here is the link on the "Hey Buddy can you spare a grade?" thread:

    http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3285014&fpart=1

You look at the corner and tell me. I can also see a sharp corner in the CGC case right at this moment. I went ahead and made the scan for the corner so you don't have to go through too much trouble to view it.

Back cover slight thumb crease or barely visable bend or crease, faint...back cover?

If it's a white back cover they can be even more difficult to see, you've got to hold them flat to the light to see it.

Front looks good, I'm betting whatever the problem is, it's on the back cover.

    Possible slight bend?

    Corner78.jpg[/img]

very very hard to tell. Beautiful book regardless

  7. finally got me a nice copy

    heatherswedding.jpg

Nice book c-mack. I haven't had a 129 since I was 10 in 1990. Traded my neighbour a bunch of crappy hockey cards for it and than it turned out it was his dads and he was pissed and wanted it back :( His dad came over to my house and I said I didn't know what he was talking about lol than he asked to speak to my dad :(

"Just give him the comic back"

    whatever

It was actually a lower grade pos but at that age :takeit:

  8. That Rawhide 93... just divine.

Especially, when I almost fainted from looking at Greggy's westerns, then this Ghost Town guy comes in with these mind boggling spectacles of beauty. Greggy better watch your back, there's a new kid in town.

    nyycytjpg-2.gif

lol New kid in town. You need to check out Ghost Towns registry (worship) Its great too because his set has 100% PICS  He`s put some effort into it for sure

  9. Just wondering about this cuz of all the record keeping and stuff that goes on with CGC, and the census and all.....if we (or somebody) cracks open a slab to get to the book......wouldn't it be a good idea to notify them? Sort of like a courtesy or something. I mean it could alter alot of things if the guy with the highest graded copy of Marvel Mystery #58 cracks it open, which in my thinking would immediately put the second highest graded copy right to the top. Any thoughts?

Yes...and oh, btw...you're supposed to check the obits in your local paper and cross out the dead people in your phone book daily to keep it up to date... :makepoint:

So I'm not the only one that does this

  10. here is my one pick up from chicago

  11. I am aware of three posters:

Captain America Comics 37 - the one pictured,

Marvel Mystery 66 - Human Torch Death Ray, and

All Winners 11 - the big three blowing up a Nazi oil storage facility

I have also seen a paited cover recreation of Marvel Mystery 15

    Thanks

  12. I posted recently that I got a couple back issues from #20-52. So I went out and bought the trades for the missing issues.

OMG! What a great series. I can't even remember the last time I got this engrossed in a comic. As soon as I started reading I couldn't wait to get to the next issue. Now I'm all caught up and have to wait an entire month

I honestly didn't expect this series to be this good. Yes some of the violence is a little Whoa, but man is Kirkman an awesome writer.

Any idea of how long this series is supposed to last?

  13. Well, I guess I'm going to join the club. I was at my local LCS today and they had a secret sale for their best customers so I picked up issues #21-55 for 25cents each

I've been wanting to start this for quite some time but figured it was too late but now with the purchase of a couple trades and a lot of reading I'll be caught up in no time.

My question to you Wdead fans is - Must I read #'s 1-20 or could I jump in at #21 and read those later on. Will doing this ruin the story for me?

You should start at the beginning..you can get the tpb pretty cheap!

And welcome to the club!! :headbang:

Was kind of a stupid question. It usually is better to start with #1 :makepoint:

My LCS had no tpb's left so I'll probably have to head downtown sometime soon. I just hate waiting to read something once I get some issues.

    and Thanks for the welcome!
