  1. Hi Reggie and all! I wanted to share another vintage photocopy of a partially inked ASM Ross Andru page, this time from ASM #129. Cheers, Lee
  2. I am reluctant to play "flip thread police", but I think that cloud cloddie's recent offering probably falls under the heading of "provenance info" (hey, the New Mutants page has bounced around a bit over the past year+) rather than a "flip" of which potential buyers should be aware. I think today's offering from Sean- is more in the spirit of the thread. Some folks have expressed an idea in the past that "dealers" can't really be "flippers" because the dealer business model is to buy or acquire art for a lower price to sell for a higher price. I can go either way on that point, depending on the circumstances, including the amount of time that has expired between listings and the price mark-up. When I started this thread in 2017, I tagged it with the words "wishful thinking" and "homework". The post from Sean- shows us that a dealer won a piece on eBay a month ago and is offering it for 4X what he paid (wishful thinking?). The post from Sean- also shows us, if we weren't aware already, that Scott Hampton has been listing a lot of nifty art on eBay that has been going for fairly reasonable prices. That's the homework aspect of this thread that perhaps will help newer collectors realize that some original art asking prices are not totally reasonable, and that they should expand their horizons when trying to add pieces to their collections.
  3. The Signature auction ends in a few days, and here are some more lots that have been offered for sale in decades past: Jack Kirby, Journey into Mystery #125, page 11 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/jack-kirby-and-vince-colletta-journey-into-mystery-125-story-page-11-hercules-original-art-marvel-1966-/a/7279-93079.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/journey-mystery-125-page-11 Murphy Anderson, Hawkman #18, page 15 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/murphy-anderson-hawkman-18-story-page-15-original-art-dc-1967-/a/7279-95019.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/hawkman-18-page-15 Ross Andru, Superman Family #214 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/ross-andru-and-MR.-giordano-the-superman-family-214-cover-dc-1982-/a/7279-95043.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/superman-family-214-cover Gene Colan, Daredevil #37, page 19 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/gene-colan-and-john-tartaglione-daredevil-37-story-page-19-original-art-marvel-1968-/a/7279-95166.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/daredevil-37-page-19 Luis Dominguez, DC Special Series #7 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/luis-dominguez-dc-special-series-7-ghosts-cover-original-art-dc-1977-/a/7279-95193.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/ghosts-special-7-cover Gil Kane, Green Lantern #26, page 7 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/gil-kane-and-joe-giella-green-lantern-26-story-page-7-original-art-dc-1964-/a/7279-95260.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/green-lantern-26-page-7 More likely to come!
  4. Sounds like fun! If I am in town, I will try to swing by. I'm glad you hooked up with Larry, he makes things happen!
  5. Another big Heritage Signature auction is underway, and there are a few familiar pieces to nerds like myself who collect old art advertisements: Gene Colan, Captain America #121 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/gene-colan-and-joe-sinnott-captain-america-121-cover-original-art-marvel-1970-/a/7279-91007.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/captain-america-121-cover Gil Kane, Defenders #27 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/gil-kane-and-john-romita-sr-the-defenders-27-cover-original-art-marvel-1975-/a/7279-91014.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/defenders-27-cover Jack Kirby, Journey into Mystery #86, page 1 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/jack-kirby-and-dick-ayers-journey-into-mystery-86-thor-splash-page-1-original-art-marvel-1962-/a/7279-91018.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/journey-mystery-86-page-1 Ross Andru, Marvel Super-Heroes #14, page 1 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/ross-andru-and-bill-everett-marvel-super-heroes-14-splash-page-1-original-art-marvel-1968-/a/7279-93003.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/marvel-super-heroes-14-page-1 I'll post more of these as I find them!
  6. He is accepting partial trades.... Make it work!
  7. One more update from yesterday's Heritage session: Mike Mignola, Batman #428 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/mike-mignola-batman-428-cover-original-art-dc-1989-/a/7274-91073.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/batman-428-cover This cover, plus another cover, plus 132 interior pages, sold for $4,400 in 1992. Cheers, Lee
  8. Tomorrow is the start of yet another huge Heritage Signature auction. Longtime collectors might recognize a few pieces, as they were offered for sale previously, before they went to Heritage: Dale Keown, She-Hulk #13 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/dale-keown-and-ernie-colon-the-sensational-she-hulk-13-cover-original-art-cover-marvel-1990-/a/7274-93065.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/she-hulk-13-cover Jack Kirby, Fantastic Four #63, page 12 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/jack-kirby-and-joe-sinnott-fantastic-four-63-story-page-12-original-art-marvel-1967-/a/7274-93085.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/fantastic-four-63-page-12 John Romita, Jr., Iron Man #126, page 31 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/john-romita-jr-and-bob-layton-iron-man-126-splash-page-17-original-art-marvel-1979-/a/7274-93125.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/iron-man-126-page-31 Jim Starlin, Power Man #45 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/jim-starlin-power-man-45-cover-original-art-marvel-1977-/a/7274-93159.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/power-man-45-cover Cheers, Lee
  9. Regarding what McFarlane was making from his art sales at the time, I don't have his "adjective-less" Spider-Man title art prices, but an art collector kindly shared this list with me, which shows prices up through ASM #325.
  10. You're welcome Reggie! And it's definitely OK to share the CBG ad. Please feel free to plug www.comicartads.com whenever you want to as well. Always nice to see folks enjoying the website!
  11. Great analysis! I communicated with Jim Salicrup, who hosted me as an intern in the Spider-Man office at Marvel in early 1990. Jim told me that they "hardly sold any", and that he wished he had all those pages stacked up in the back of his closet. I don't know what eventually happened to them. Cheers, Lee
  12. Hi Reggie and all! I thought you might enjoy an advertisement I found, from the December 19, 1975 issue of The Buyer's Guide for Comic Fandom. First, a little background: I obsessively collect images of old comic art for-sale ads for a searchable online database I created called ComicArtAds. You can search original art ads by comic artist and comic title. Right now the database includes about 40 results is you search Ross Andru. In the course of my searching for old art ads in The Buyer's Guide for Comic Fandom, I came across the ad below. I have seen a lot, but this ad really caused some angst for me. My first comic book ever was Amazing Spider-Man #140, and to see so many pages from that book and others for sale for $35/each made me sad. But it also made me hopeful that those pages are probably out in the wild somewhere, waiting for me to find them. Enjoy, and take care! Best regards, Lee
  13. This cover was going for $550 back in 1997: http://www.comicartads.com/content/king-conan-1-cover Maybe add two zeros to that price today? I can't guess art prices anymore for the life of me, but $55K seems kind of reasonable. Then again, it's a "first issue", so maybe double it to $110K.
  14. The April Heritage Signature auction certainly is a big one art-wise, and some of the pieces have been offered in comic art catalogs and/or in Comic Buyer's Guide ads over the past decades: John Buscema, King Conan #1 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/john-buscema-and-ernie-chan-king-conan-1-cover-original-art-marvel-1980-/a/7270-91010.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/king-conan-1-cover Gene Colan, Captain America #134, page 1 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/gene-colan-and--ayers-captain-america-134-splash-page-1-falcon-original-art-marvel-1971-/a/7270-94054.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/captain-america-134-page-1 Johnny Craig, Crime Patrol #13 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/johnny-craig-crime-patrol-13-cover-original-art-ec-1949-/a/7270-94057.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/crime-patrol-13-cover Jack Kirby, Demon #9, page 5 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/jack-kirby-and-mike-royer-demon-9-story-page-5-original-art-dc-1973-/a/7270-94111.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/demon-9-page-5 Marie Severin, Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD #17 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/marie-severin-and-john-verpoorten-attributed-nick-fury-agent-of-shield-17-cover-original-art-and-cover-p-total-2/a/7270-94173.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/nick-fury-agent-shield-17-cover (This is an interesting one if you look at the cover offered for sale in 1996 as opposed to the Heritage cover.) Jim Starlin, Marvel Fanfare #21, page 12 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/jim-starlin-and-al-milgrom-marvel-fanfare-21-story-page-12-original-art-marvel-1985-/a/7270-94191.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/marvel-fanfare-21-page-12 Ron Wilson, Captain Marvel #35 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/ron-wilson-and-frank-giacoia-captain-marvel-35-cover-original-art-marvel-1974-/a/7270-94198.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/captain-marvel-35-cover John Buscema, Sub-Mariner #7, page 7 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/john-buscema-and-dan-adkins-sub-mariner-7-story-page-7-original-art-marvel-1968-/a/7270-97096.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/sub-mariner-7-page-7 Cheers, Lee
  15. And was splitting it up for sale in The Comic Buyer's Guide as of 1998.
  16. Wow, good eye! I would have never spotted that. Super-subtle on Dave's part!
  17. I think your post is fine in this thread. It just seems like pricing common sense is sometimes absent with comic art these days, whereas almost 30 years ago, you reduced your price if your art wasn't selling at the initial price.
  18. This is how it worked in the 1990s: A Kirby panel page doesn't sell for $175 in May 1994? It gets re-advertised by the same dealer for $160 in September 1994.
  19. The title says it all, I have a Kurt Schaffenberger/Dave Hunt Superboy title splash (with Superboy in action) from 1981 ending Tuesday evening on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115043550423?mkevt=1&mkpid=0&emsid=e12000.m43.l6300&mkcid=7&ch=osgood&euid=ed74ab48a3f5453e9ffe33671d494bbe&bu=43191019603&exe=0&ext=0&osub=-1~1&crd=20211012174902&segname=12000&sojTags=ch%3Dch%2Cbu%3Dbu%2Cnqt%3Dnqt%2Cnqc%3Dnqc%2Cmdbreftime%3Dmdbreftime%2Ces%3Des%2Cec%3Dec%2Cexe%3Dexe%2Cext%3Dext%2Cexe%3Dexe%2Cext%3Dext%2Cosub%3Dosub%2Ccrd%3Dcrd%2Csegname%3Dsegname%2Cchnl%3Dmkcid High bid is pretty low right now, so thanks in advance for any interest! Cheers, Lee
  20. Back in the 1990s, art drops were announced in the pages of the Comic Buyer's Guide, like this 1993 offering of Sam Keith and Brian Bolland art by Scott Dunbier. If you want to see more old art ads, I have added quite a few 1990s ads for Jack Kirby Fantastic Four art to my ComicArtAds website. Cheers, Lee
  21. Hi all! I have placed a few Kurt Schaffenberger Superboy pages, including a title splash, in my For Sale gallery on CAF: https://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=151037 Please let me know if you have any interest! Thanks, Lee
  22. The September 2021 Heritage Signature Auction features a few pieces that have been offered in comic art catalogs or Comic Buyer's Guide advertisements over the years, including the following: Johnny Craig Crime SuspenStories #6 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/johnny-craig-crime-suspenstories-6-cover-original-art-ec-1951-/a/7246-95028.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/crime-suspenstories-6-cover Gil Kane Atom #11, page 1 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/gil-kane-and-sid-greene-the-atom-11-splash-page-original-art-dc-1964-/a/7246-95056.s?ic4=ListView-Thumbnail-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/atom-11-page-1 George Perez Wonder Woman #32 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/george-perez-wonder-woman-32-cover-original-art-dc-1989-/a/7246-95096.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/wonder-woman-32-cover Adam Hughes Justice League America #42 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/adam-hughes-justice-league-america-42-cover-original-art-dc-1990-/a/7246-97218.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/justice-league-america-42-cover Steve Lightle Classic X-Men #41 cover https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/steve-lightle-classic-x-men-41-cover-original-art-marvel-1989-/a/7246-97289.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/classic-x-men-41-cover Al Plastino Action Comics #294, page 1 https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/al-plastino-action-comics-294-splash-page-1-original-art-dc-1962-/a/7246-97342.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 http://www.comicartads.com/content/action-comics-294-page-1 Cheers, Lee

  24. Very interesting write-up Race, nice work! This sort of thing takes time, so I would not begrudge you asking for donations or setting up a Patreon account (or something) where donors get access to a "deluxe" report that includes some of the analytics Nico wants, Taylor's chat highlights, and/or the images Legion requested. I would be into it!
