  1. i have no skin in this game but I think by having 2 sets...one with no variant and one with all the variants then you will be king of both sets eventually right? assuming you are a completist.

Why not have 3 sets, one without any variants, one for variants only for those only want to collect variants, and one with everything?

at the end of the day, you CAN be KING of all 3 sets.

  2. even if the seller has a no return policy, If you received the slab and felt that it was tempered with, all you need to do is contact Ebay, explain why you want to return it and they will force the seller to take it back and give you a full refund.

It is a hassle to buy from sellers with no return policy because you have to jump thru a few hoops to get a refund but it can be done.

Here is one situation that I had a while ago.

I bought an electronic item that was claimed to be brand new. The seller had a no return policy. I received the item and..

    a) it wasn't working

    b) the rubbers on the bottom of the device were worn out as if the item had been moved around many times.

I wrapped up the item and shipped it back asap with tracking before I contact Ebay (mistake here) but I did contact the seller right away that I am returning it and expect a full refund....and I file a case with Ebay when he decided to tell me in no way is the item broken and he will refund my money.

Ebay contacted me shortly for proof that the item is NOT NEW such as a pic of the worn out rubbers but I told them it is too late because I shipped it back already. I gave Ebay the tracking info and within 24 hours that the package was delivered, I got a full refund from Paypal.

note to self..contact Ebay first next time and let them guide you on the steps you need to do to return an item from a seller that offer no return policy because if your reason is legit...Ebay will let you return it.

  3. where did I say I get $970? I was suggesting $925

    No, I said $970. I was taking 3% off the $1,000. I feel like I'm missing your boat... [/quote

uh...I am totally confused on the issue now.

I think the confusion is about the asking price.

If an item is $1000 per GPA, and the seller ask $1000 and willing to give 3% discount...then it is up to the buyer to want it or not right? you chose to not buy from this type of seller(s)?

My comment was to your general comment that if a seller offer 3% discount, you are not buying it as "discount" because the price is inflated already.

...so, unless I am misreading, if a buyer already discounting 10% or more per GPA, how then he can inflate anything or came across as "greedy"?

    what am I missing here?

  4. let me shine in for what it is worth.

    a) I run a business that takes credit cards for a long time now and I constantly looks for way to reduce the cost of transaction fees charged as long as I can remember. The terminal and the service that allowed us to charge Amex, Discover, Visa, and Mastercard run around 3% or so per month. So, we run 50% of our revenue thru the terminal to offer CONVENIENCES for our clients. That amount to $30k per month and each month, we pay $1k to $1200 to the company that LEASES us the terminal and service. There are many companies that provide this service and you can call 10 and give or take 0.5% or $30 here or there, I will still pay roughly 3% to whoever I decide to use. I got calls all the time to switch each and every time, the numbers didn't change much.

    b) Paypal is doing pretty much the same as these type of providers so they are offering to small businesses/individuals like all of us to offer and take or pay like any businesses. They have a nice monopoly with the individuals but the 3% is not gouging or unfair. If Paypal doesn't exist, how many people here is willing to go lease a terminal to offer credit pard payment option?

    c) Now onto something even more difficult to debate. Why are the buyers (in general) here expect all the benefits of the savings. Whether it is CL fees, ebay fees, or Paypal fees, why is it wrong for the sellers to get part of the benefits?

Sure, if I can sell an item on Ebay for $1000, roughly after Ebay and Paypal fees, I might only get $850 (give or take but you get the idea), so why is it wrong for me or someone else to ask $925? split the difference? If this is about fairness, then is it wrong to expect part of the "windfall" instead of the buyers get 100% of the windfall?

thankfully, I don't have much to sell or buy these days so I don't have to worry about offending anyone to boycott me but lets hear it.

Heck I am guilty too of low balling also so this is by no mean how I make offer each and every time but occasionally, I have made an offer like this

"GPA = $1000, so I will offer $950 because I think it is a win win for both of us"

how many of you would write something like this

"GPA = $1000 so I will offer you $900 since that is what you get if you sell on CL"

is it offensive to me? no but that is the reality of what buyers expect and want around here.

Heck I can go on about GPA and the flaws there as well but that is a different debate.

  5. Plenty of collectors in the 50's that bought these books off the rack that put them away. You don't see them at shows or LCS because these type of collectors are out of the hobby for years if not decades. With a little luck, you can meet them and they dig out the closets for you.

I put out words to all of my friends for years that I am a buyer. I let everyone know I am a collector. I never am embarrass to tell anyone I collect comic books and I offer finder fees for my lookers. You will be surprise what I got over the past 10 years...some amazing stuff.

  6. I'd call that more like a 7.0 than an 8.0, wouldn't you guys? Nice book, but a number of color breaks along the spine when you zoom in... and hard to know how much the digital photos are amping the colors up.

I agree, Jon. The spine really stands out to me.

We need Nick to chime in with a grade here. Paging ETANICK.

    :acclaim:

I think the book is a 7.0/7.5..hard to tell if the spine is equally as bad on the bottom half of the front cover. The arts hide most flaws the with the pics provided.

there is a hint of 1/2" CB corner crease on the top right front cover? if that is indeed a slight CB crease, then a 7.0 for me, it not a 7.5

other than that, it is a nice well centered book with clean back cover.

I do think the 227 is nicer than the 232 from the same seller...since the 232 has a bigger crease on the top right corner with similar creasing on the spine.

I had a lot of bad luck buying 232 over the years because the lime green cover hides so many CB creases that can only be seen in hands.
