  1. Every time I try to save a little money a Rick Starr thread pops up.
  2. Her origin can't be any more difficult to portray on film than Venom's. I doubt they are going full-on Secret Wars Battleworld costume repair machine in the Venom movie.
  3. Typical collector math: Generally not worth slabbing = low census numbers Low census numbers + two rabid bidders = huge paydays for sellers I've gotten tangled in a few of these as well (see Spidey Super Stories).
  4. If the thread was in fact pulled for those reasons, maybe the reasoning was that it was close enough to the end of the year to not feel too bad about yanking a 2017 thread...
  5. I didn't see any such posts, but apparently some winners had hinted that their wins might be available for purchase. I can see why that would get a reprimand or a trim, but I agree that poofing the entire thread was a bit extreme.
  6. Ok, let’s try to play by the rules this time. Thread for bragging/commiserating about wins and losses, not for not-so-subtle sales threads.
  7. I think I see more DCUs of #52 than the regular edition. That #51 stack was a nice find. There are enough Kyle Rayner fans out there that you shouldn’t have trouble moving those.
  8. The old version of the new slabs without the inner well put pressure on the outer edges of the book. Over time the book was pushed inward, causing rippling in the book. I think it was @chromium who had the diagram, if I remember correctly.
  9. Justice League #87 F/VF to VF- -- asking $17 + shipping ($27 in VF OSPG) SOLD Another flat and glossy book. Light spine wear and a bit of a crease in the lower right front cover. A couple of other minor non-color breaking bends. Two strips of blue ink on the top page edges, the right one hits the cover a bit.
  10. I don't have a lot of time to post this evening, but I can get a couple of books up... Justice League #85 F/VF -- asking $20 + shipping (OSPG $31 in VF) Very solid book, could definitely hit VF with a press as there is just an accumulation of non-color breaking bending and small edge/corner bends. Very glossy. Typical swipe of black ink on top of pages.
  11. The statement I was reacting to detailed a buyer expectation of a 10-15% discount to online prices. That sort of an expectation does seem like entitlement to me, if buyers are indeed willing to walk if dealers won’t discount that strongly. I’d agree with your point that there is more information and competition in the marketplace today. But to me the safety, convenience, and experience of shopping at a con with merchandise in hand is worth a small premium to FMV. I know what I’m getting because I can inspect it, which minimizes condition risk, and I take it with me so I remove the cost and risk of shipping. To expect all those benefits plus a discount to online prices (which price the various risks into the equation) seems like entitlement.
  12. Ah yes, the "real fan" argument, as if nobody with slabs in their house could be putting them in a collection. Who does he think would be the end user in that scenario, or is it an endless loop of flippers selling to flippers?
  13. I can see where that might have crossed a line, especially the bolded part. I didn't see any of that myself, but if folks were doing that then that could get a thread like that deleted. I sell books too, but there is a time and a place...
  14. Byrne already has FU money. I'm sure he doesn't care. I imagine that he doesn't care either, about the money anyway. But a lot of the controversy generated over the SS among creators seems to hinge on the perception that their signatures are creating huge value, and thus they feel justified in charging ever increasing sums to those getting their books slabbed for SS. I thought that this was why Byrne and others put a stop to signing for yellow labels, but others can correct me if I am wrong. Anyway, if they are so convinced that they can print money with their signature, it would be enlightening for them to try selling their own SS of their signatures on eBay to see how "easy" it is.
  15. And those would obviously be good gets for any show, but once they've done their 10th US show they would go back to being ho-hum. Matt Smith and David Tennant have done several shows this year each, as have supporting people like Jenna Coleman. Great people from a great show, but they aren't going to drive traffic like they used to when they were tough to see.
  16. The only reason Byrne’s signature is worth big money is that there are so few of them in yellow labels. If Byrne signed for free at every other show then the value would drop precipitously and there would be no incentive for secret witnesses. Or, Byrne or Young or whomever could make all those fat stacks themselves if they created their own yellow label books or sketches and sold them onto the marketplace. Since it’s so easy.
  17. Ok, now it is time for dinner and a bit of tree decorating. More later this evening or tomorrow.
  18. And, now for something slightly different to break up the JLA monotony before I take a break: Secret Society of Super-Villains #3 VG, #4 VG, #5 VG, #8 VF-, #9 F -- asking $10 + shipping for set Fun lot that is good for readers or maybe slightly better than that. General wear is the theme here.
  19. Justice League #84 VG (looks much nicer) -- asking $5 + shipping SOLD Structurally a F++ or VF-, but someone stuck the back cover to something and took off a strip of paper about 5" x 1/8" (you can see it across the black type along the spine). Might not be a coincidence that these books are in self seal bags... Terrible shame, but book looks fantastic in the bag. Typical spot of ink on top page edges, pink/red this time.
