  1. I think the hobby is so big that i think you need to have categories. I think there's a discussion to be had about the "A" level, best of breed comic art overall. But once you get to "B" and "C" level stuff you need to start going into sub categories. "A" / "B" / "C" list for Alan Moore 80's books, Indy boom books, 90's Xtreme, Bronze age superhero, Romance, early vertigo... ect. Once we start to chunk up into sub categories i think we can have meaningful discussions.
  2. D&d art is white hot if you can even find it. Last year an Elmore line art interior from one of the dragonlance modules sold for about 2-3x the price would have been a couple of years ago and was flipped in weeks for a profit.
  3. Plus vs Baseball cards or Beanie Babies, there's a functional use for these cards. You use them to play a very popular game, and there's a real finite supply of these items. Especially when you're talking anything pre-revised. And high grade is even harder, because a lot of them were used (or ripped to be used)
  4. I disagree on that point. Magic the Gathering is currently in it's heyday IMO. There's tons of players, people buy cards by the crate, and it's a thriving sub-culture. I think there's a long tail on these art prices, and the old school sets always have a special place in player's hearts. Plus, these old cards are still played in some current formats. When we see the game start to wane then we can start the 20-30 year timer on the OA prices, but right now we're in a growth period, like the early 2000's of comic art.
  5. I've purchased from that site a few times, never any issues. As others have said, maybe he's waiting for the art, or on vacation and didn't tell anyone. It is summer =)
  6. Whenever i hear less is more, I go right to Eduardo Rizzo's art on 100 Bullets, that guy did some amazing stuff in that series. For me, I feel like I have a fairly common theme to collecting. The nostalgic stuff from my youth is all about the art. Even if some people would call it horrible, but the 90's era, it's all about characters and art that i remember. But the stuff I've read as an adult, it's more about story than the art at times. Where i'll buy sub-par art, because it was part of a story I really enjoyed.
  7. For what it's worth the page I bought off their marketplace was not from their personal inventory and was a consignment by a 3rd party. That said I wasn't able to get them to budge on price, but still pulled the trigger.
  8. This is also the problem with trying to create umbrella terms. 1 person's "A" level is another's drek. But i think when high end collectors talk about "A" level art, it's both storyline and example. So the true "A" stuff is a best of breed page in one of the classic storylines. I think if you want to get a hint of what people consider those things, Felix's podcast talked about it a good amount. The "portfolio" of examples you need to have a high end collection. (Hint: DRK is on that list) Where a "B" page is a secondary example from one of those classic storylines. So the art might still fetch 45k, but it's not a great page from that run because "A" examples are 150k. But another classic run that 45k might get you a true "A" Example, and 15k gets you a "B" page.
  9. I'm curious how everyone stores their paintings. Because i have no clue how to store these large / non-standard sized items, I've only ever purchased stuff like this that I planned on putting up on a wall of the house. It has made me more selective on my purchases, and maybe that's the way I should keep it =)
  10. I don't think there is any answer to that. What the market will bear vs auction results can fluctuate wildly. So something may hammer at 3k, but there might be a few collectors that were not aware / interested in bidding, but would buy it for 3x that amount. Then there are other times where auctions go nuts and the under bidder got their "example" so the next person that would put money up for it is at 60% of the hammer. I think it is about looking at the art, figuring out the market and your timeline. I'm firmly in the camp of if you own it, you can price it at whatever you want. No one is entitled to anything they don't own. It's not like we're talking about food, shelter and medical care here.
  11. wow, shocked no one posted this. More Mind MGMT, more gooder! 42k already, fully funded with just over 2 weeks to go. This is one of those series i'm glad he continues.
  12. I've never paid much attention to 2DG before, since i thought it was all Euro art. But wow, I wish CAF was up to the standards of that site. it feels like a modern site, vs CAF that just feels.... retro.
  13. I think there's some value in slabbing and authenticating sketch covers and backing boards. Other than that, there's no service that does original published art per-se. And i couldn't imagine the size and weight of slabbing an 11x17 page, much less a twice up. Do some searches on the boards, there have been many lively discussions about this topic over the years.
  14. Let's have the antithesis of the other thread. What art do you own, or want to own because you enjoy interactions with the artist? Their work is better because you know they're swell people. For me, it's Matt and Sharlene Kindt, just good people, hard working with great ideas. IMO Mind MGMT is one of those books that snuck by way too many people, and I feel very fortunate to have 2 strong examples from the series.
  15. For me, the one that comes to mind is Mike S Miller. he did some nice art from the Song of Ice and Fire universe. The 1st art I ever purchased was a splash from the Hedge Knight from him. It was a gift to the best man of my wedding. It's still great art, but given what he's espoused over the years, I'll never buy anything else from him.
  16. The neck scan is just to see if they have explosives in their head / neck. there could be a bunch of hosts (Maeve for sure) that would also pass that scan, since it's either not there or inert.
  17. which is still over a 28x return over inflation, and very few people think of return over inflation vs true returns. Either way, it's a lot more than the about 4x that people were trying to talk about to start this conversation.
  18. so, I ran the number real quick in an online calculator. the one thing you guys are missing is dividends. It's one of the biggest factors in investing in the DJIA vs comics. when you reinvest your dividends, from 1961 to today your return is 25,023.440%, just over 10% annually. Here's a link you can try out yourself https://dqydj.com/dow-jones-return-calculator/
  19. Wow, so i'm done trying to get my Top Rated Seller discount. i just got an alert on my dashboard that I need to pay for return shipping on any return? That's just fraught with disaster, it's not worth the 10% reduction in fees for me.
  20. Just to reiterate what was said above. I think using a local framer and having a relationship with them is really useful. We're not framing prom photos, we're framing stuff that has a high dollar value that can't be reproduced. If you decide to leave the art behind, make sure you know how much the framer's is insured for. your collect insure will go away for the full time you "surrender" your art to them. Dry mounting is evil! First time (and last ) i had one of my pages framed they dry mounted it without telling me. It was a nightmare to get it removed from the board. I was so upset i wound up selling the art for 25c on the dollar just to get rid of it. if you use museum glass you don't need to keep your art in the mylar. I've done it that way and really didn't like it. It gave the art some glare behind the glass. Lastly, i think with line art, the simpler the better. White matte black metal frame, or if you're feeling fancy double matte, white on top, black as the under-matte looks best IMO. For lower value art, I've used the archival frames from Bags Unlimited, and they're not bad. But you need to make sure your art is exactly 11x17. Good luck and enjoy!
  21. Hey, you should take a look at those XF1's. in 9.8 they get some good money these days!
  22. Congrats! it's an amazing feeling when "the one" shows up for you!
  23. I loved last night, it was big, and lots of things finally happened. Much like season 1, the 2nd half has really been good, where the 1st half almost feels like 100% exposition.
  24. For anything kubert, I'd start by asking Spencer Beck
