  1. Major congratulations. Art is what drives the obsession but stories like this are what make the hobby fun and keep me going. I am so very happy that this piece landed in your collection. I have a couple happy stories about Hulk art landing with me but nothing to this level. Thanks so much for sharing!
  2. Sadly, this is a common tactic used by reps to get more money from a potential buyer.

  4. Keeping the art for appreciation purposes sounds great to me! That said, a key thing to remember for auction houses is the fees that are taken on your sale ... you wouldn't see $5k if that is where the item ended during the auction. FYI
  5. I am NOT a fan of items listed as being for sale with the make an offer as the listed price. I almost always keep on going when I see something like this. That said, this scenario falls into the grey as the piece was not listed for sale and not advertised as being for sale with the make an offer price tag. The potential buyer inquired multiple times and got an indication of willingness to sell. Still not listed as a for sale item I don’t see a problem with asking for an offer personally. The artist may have been willing to sell but the price offered may not have motivated them. Maybe another offer did. Still, too much unknown to make a call if the rep did anything shady. I have learned the lesson of being ready to buy if you are successful in “digging out” art that is not listed for sale. If you are going to inquire on NFS art, be ready to make a strong offer or risk losing it completely. I have seen it happen more than once so I don’t even open communication unless I feel I can close the deal if I get the owner thinking about a sale.
  6. I have a loose prelim piece but that is it - his art prices are prohibitive for what I would like to get my hands on Congrats to those who have such nice Turner art
  7. Tough scenario to diagnose without more info. If the art wasn’t listed for sale then it most likely didn’t have a price on it and legitimately might have been something the artist wanted to keep. It happens. Do you have confidence that you made a strong offer in terms of FMV plus?
  8. Trimpe is a C artist - NO Hulk is a B book - NO
  9. Grrr, no golden ticket for me. I'd love to flip through that portfolio - maybe some day!
  10. I have often considered a move in this direction but thought it would impact how much art can be stored in a portfolio. Does Ironmandrd have pics posted or just a description?
  11. The only reason I haven't done anything for so long it my outlay is very low. 4.5K and I would be making all kinds of noise. I hope you get your money back.
  12. All theories are pure speculation and this is entirely possible but, for me, the bid retractions right before they wouldn't be able to retract any longer point to something entirely different in my eyes. This activity doesn't pass the sniff test at all
  13. For sure, this looks like a group of people that know each other trying to game the system on your item. They figure they can raise the item past where most people will want it and then drop the price at the end and hope that they can steal it at the end while casting suspicion on the seller all the while. Quite nefarious and I hope they are not successful. I would recommend sharing this perspective with eBay as it would be very easy for them to view bidding history for these IDs and any pattern would emerge immediately. Of course, eBay may not care as it does not help them make any money and might cost man hours. Good luck – anxious to hear how this turns out for you.
  14. From what I hear, you should be OK just probably experiencing a delay. I have had similar communication issues myself. I had a purchase ready to go but the communication just dried up and I got tired of chasing so I moved on.
  15. Enjoying this discussion quite a bit and am coming to see what is being referred to in terms of craft. I don’t have a strong affinity for craft personally as it doesn’t align with what is most nostalgic for me and what I appreciate most in terms of what I collect. I appreciate craft in this context tremendously as a fan of art. I can get lost in the details in a good way and recognize the level of skill and craftsmanship required to make it. I would love to own some of it. That said, with a limited budget that is consumed with other focuses, adding it to the collection doesn’t happen for the most part. My comic “imprinting” was superhero and that is what resonates most with me. Stylistically, I enjoy clean lines that many seem to refer to as “house “ style (a term I don’t particularly agree with) as demonstrated by Marvel during the bronze and silver era. Great art will always have value and a following IMHO. If craft art is losing ground to nostalgia it seems that it might just be a cyclical thing due to the huge influx of fans of the superhero genre currently. Who knows, superheroes might be down in 5 years and horror/monster might have a huge cultural revival.
  16. That would make a difference but 21K seems heavy still ... but that is the entire ballooning market at this point so go figure
  17. For sure. Nostalgia is a strong factor in what I collect but appreciation of art is just as big for me. The most nostalgic pieces of art are usually not available or cost prohibitive. I can often scratch the nostalgic itch by collecting newer art of a character or artist that aligns with my nostalgia.
  18. Thanks, this helps. Let's see some good examples of craft art to drive this point home
