  1. I'm sure there's an ASM 238 somewhere but more than that I consider the Hobgoblin storyline to be defining turning point of Spiderman. Here's a pretty good link outlining its importance. I liked his review quite a bit. http://www.chasingamazingblog.com/2013/07/11/amazing-spider-man-238-original-hobgoblin-saga-part-1/ About the only complaint about the Hobgoblin you could have is that he isn't all that original. I'll counterpoint that by bringing up great characters that aren't original either. Thor, Mr Fantastic, Kitty Pride, All the DC Silver Age heroes reissued and many more. Really, the quality of a character is what's done with him over time not just the 1st appearance. And that's what makes Hobgoblin so good. From 238-289 to PPSS 85 and the ASM v Wolverine one shot; this 5 year action-drama was second to none. I'll admit my bias in that I basically started collecting as a teenager in the mid 1980s so these are pretty formative. And I fondly think of this storyline as the last great one that wasn't just crushed by crossovers, which started just after this with the Death of Kraven and Xmen craziness. Coming up, some pics and a question.
  2. I also thought there were some issues in the early 1960s with Vargas pinups that sell for extra.
  3. I think a lot of older folks bought these collected them even back in the day. So they didn't get mishandled like kiddie comics. Then there are all the overstock issues, that all magazines seem to have in some form or fashion.
  4. I think there are some but I can't remember which ones. I had a collection from 1960-1990s and I know the late 50s and 1960-62 sell OK like $5-$10 if VF to NM. If less, with split spines or many creases, they're $1 books. After that I'd sell them by the year and hope to get $20 a year. 1970s less than that - just too common. Ed
  5. And for fun a nice 100, another classic
  6. This and the spidermobile issues had a jump the shark quality to them.
  7. Thank you for the timely purchase of an ASM 39. Enjoy. Ed
  8. I have a feeling the book will grade whatever the best cover is which is going to be the inner cover 99% of the time. And then any book with Light Tan pages, the highest grade they will give is an 8.5.
  9. So who has the highest graded UPC copy? Ed
  10. Not saying this didn't happen but this is a much better yarn than simply, "As we got fewer orders during the year we distributed less and then pulped a lot of the leftovers." It's like the guy who's mom threw away his comics. He always had an Xmen #1 and all the rest of them too.....
  11. That is most likely true especially given the blowout display. My understanding is that the high number series were only distributed in upstate New York and Canada.
  12. I'd love to see the business notes from Topps in 1951-1952 timeframe. They basically went big in 1952 (sports and non-sports) and to get Woolworth to provide that kind of floor space is incredible. I wonder who the driving force behind that was and how he was able to convince the store owners to distribute in such a big way. I don't think Walmart even gives that much space to trading cards today, and that's with a sure bet and history of sales. This was a first time experiment. A mind blowing picture, of the most important year in sports card history. Might as well show the distribution trucks for Marvel in 1962.
  13. It's normally never this easy but here you go, PM sent
  14. Good luck, Marty. That's a great book. Here is one that walked into the shop about three years ago. After getting it graded I couldn't part with it... At least not for my offer price.
