  1. Story behind this purchase. Guy calls me about 3 years ago from Philly - about 2-3 hours one way. Says he has a bunch of 1970s and 1980s comics, not in the best of shape but he has all the titles. So I ask him about Hulk 181, Xmen 94, GS Xmen 1 and Spiderman 129. He doesn't have any of these but he used to and that someone must have grabbed them from him. OK, great this must be a picked through collection and it's a long drive so I basically blow it off. And he's probably going to ask $1 a book which is about what I'd sell them for so I'll pass. Well I get another call from Philly about a collection and this one I go to, so as I kept the phone number of the first guy I called him and sure enough he still had them and "I'd really like to just get rid of them all". Well OK. So he has them in his attic (with air conditioning) and sure enough they are read books but he did find the Hulk 180 and 181, the Xmen are 95 on up and Spiderman is 150 on up, plus every other popular Marvel title about 2000 books. He knows the Hulk 181 is worth good money. I ask how much he wants for everything and he says "just make me an offer, I don't know, 5 or 10 cents a book." OK - how about $500 for everything. That include the Hulk 181? Yeah. Make it $600. Ummmmm, OK. So there you have it, a 6 hour round trip and here they are. The other deal was a wash. 1970s goodness. Here's the rest of them. http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=5643776&fpart=1
  2. I thought these were reprints from the Silly Symphonies newspaper strips. If that is that case then I imagine there are some differences due to spacing and other issues. ed
  3. I have a little different take on condition, I do think that a number of these are out there in high grade, although demand is decent as well so prices are usually better than comics of the era. I think the lack of staples and the solid structure of the books kept them in decent shape at comic stores or in collections with reasonable storage and handling. In other words, a box of these kept un bagged and un boarded would survive in 9.4-9.8 condition much easier than a box of comics in the same type of storing and average light handling. I could easily be biased too as I bought two collections of these digests of about 100 books each and they were both very nice. I also bought a collection of about 300 Richie Rich digests which also were ultra nice overall. But again, demand for these is similar to treasuries, if you have them in 9.0 and up collectors want them. Ed
  4. Great buyer, easy transaction. Ed
  5. Awesome thank you for showing this.
  6. I wouldn't mind knowing what folks consider the 1st of a genre is. And if there is debate, all the better. 1st Comic:Famous Funnies 1 (?) 1933 1st Superhero: Action 1 1938 1st female lead character?: Wonder Woman in All Star 8? 1st Horror: Eerie 1 (?) 1947 1st Western: Crackajack Funnies #9 (?) 1939 - 1st cover and app of Red Ryder? or is it Hi Yo Silver w Lone Ranger? or something else. 1st Sci Fi: Strange Adventures 1? I doubt it, isn't one of the LB Cole classics earlier than 1950? 1st Cheesecake? (what's the first real headlights, or female suggestive cover? Phantom Lady? Junior?, a Fiction House?) 1st Romance: Venus 1 (?) 1st or earliest classic gruesome cover? Bullet hole in the head, acid to face etc. And any other of the major categories that folks collect. 1st Paratrooper cover: Action 2? A couple others that aren't as collected as they once were. 1st photo cover: 1st TV comic: 1st Funny Animal cover/story: Is it still Famous Funnies 1. 1st WWII cover? - this might be tough to nail down 1st Hitler cover? Here's a few other oddballs that might be fun to search for. 1st Motorcycle cover 1st Statue of Liberty cover 1st cover with a television on it 1st cover with Vampire (or Dracula), Werewolf, Mummy, Frankenstein (Classics?) Zombie, Alien
  7. Looking around some more, looks like the inner pages need to have tiny margins to be a 1st print, which mine does not have.
  8. I have a Zap 2 fifty cent cover. What does heavy cover stock mean. Are we talking baxter paper? Graphic Novel? What's the real trick with this one. Ed
  9. In the conversation. Superman 123 - first Superwoman Superman 199 - Flash race/classic cover Superman 106 - Origin details/classic Luthor cover Superman 127 - 1st Titano Adventure 276 - 1st Metallo
  10. Here's how the Xmen 100 came out. I thought it was a gift grade.
  11. Nothing to see here. Just got these back from Sarasota with a few 9.6's and 9.8's.
  12. Like "in bed" you can pretty much end every sentence with this. Only in polite company though.
  13. Wowee on both those variants. Hard to believe any 1970s Xmen would be in a discount bin. Ed
  14. Anyone have a shot of the pig head cover with the chain saw. Always thought that was the best one. Ed
  15. I was selling this book and noticed the square discoloration over the issue number. When I checked out sales on ebay, I noticed that there are actually three versions on this copy. A Whitman, and the two regular versions, one with the discoloration and one without. I doubt if there is any real interest in collecting "miscolored issue number" versions but I do think it is interesting, especially to DC Whitman buyers. I'm thinking the discoloration occurred due to them taking the box off and there being an affect on the 4 color process? I'm checking to see if there are any others.
  16. Great buyer, only gets the best.
  17. Good for him. I wonder how many PM's he got asking to end it early? 50? Some other nice comics he has for sale.
