  1. I find it interesting just how different the original and the reprint look, trying to decide which one I like better...
  2. Finally found some of these in the wild, more than one store told me someone had bought them all when they first came in. Bad news: out of 6 bags, only 3 different figs. Good news: got the Loki with Throg, which is miles and away the one I wanted most.
  3. Two books today. The Creepy #16, while still not high grade, is a significant upgrade from my previous beat up reader. Very happy to have it. More interesting is the Monster World #1, the Mummy story predates Creepy #1 as the first Warren horror comic story, with great Wally Wood art to boot. I think this is an underrated book, even if it is fairly common. Warren retroactively declaring Monster World 1-10 to be Famous Monsters 70-79 means people don't always realize this came out between Famous Monsters 30 and 31.
  4. Yet another reason I love mapbacks. I need to find a copy of this one, I think
  5. Here's a couple more. As to which made the grade, I think of the ones we've seen so far the Vampirella #1 has a clear lead, but there are a couple other solid choices in there. Here's a related question: What was the first comic that was a self-proclaimed Collector's Item?
  6. Mickey did have a Gottfredson, who did for the Mickey in the comic strip something similar. But that never really made it to the comic books other than reprints. But it gives us at least some idea what could have happened. I don't think we ever really got anything like that for the Looney Tunes, for instance. Although Mary Jane & Sniffles was brilliant in its own way and some of Sheldon Mayer's funny animals for DC have a Warner Brothers vibe to them.
  7. Today's pickups at the local store. To answer a question somebody asked earlier, I've decided I'm NOT going to try for a complete run of Ace D-Series books, if for no reason that I have no interest in trying to track down the 40 or so Nurse novels that comprise half of the last 80 books in the run. (I wouldn't mind one or two as samples, but I don't want or need the overall headache.) I am gunning for a full set of the SF doubles, at the very least, though. Anyway, 3 more D-Series and a Dell with a stunning cover:
  8. Found at the local store today, or more specifically the owner pointed out some PKD digests he had just gotten in. This one was the one I picked, because of this news this week, although I may get others if they're still there next time I'm in: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/philip-k--vulcans-hammer-francis-lawrence-1235043911/
  9. Happy Veteran's Day! Air Force was my branch when I was in:
  10. You're welcome. I was lucky, I did my four years between the gulf wars and got out unscathed, with only one occasion where they were even sending scud missiles in my direction. I don't pretend to compare myself to those who spent months or years in combat zones.
  11. Maybe you already noticed this and that's why you were laughing... I'm about 98% certain the copy at the UNCW site IS my copy! I picked it up at KAYO books in SF in July, but beyond that I have no idea how it made its way to me... The UNCW image and a new scan of my copy, showing the edges more clearly:
  12. Here's a few more flip sides. Which raises the question... it's pretty clear on these books which is the headline book and which is the also-ran. (The D-1 is arguably the exception, but even there I think most people view Too Hot for Hell as the 'front'). I can think of several single-author doubles where both sides are equally in demand, but are there any multiple creator doubles where both sides are in demand beyond the normal run in the range? The only one I can think of off the top of my head is D-227; Gunner Cade is a well-regarded title and Crisis in 2140 is wanted by the H. Beam Piper fans (like me!) because Ace never reprinted it when they finally brought back the rest of Piper's works in the late 70's- early 80's. But it's a pretty weak candidate, I think.
  13. Your Spiderweb actually looks similar to my copy, down to the creases near the spine and lower right corner... not a perfect match, but I think I could mistake your copy for mine if I didn't have them both to compare. I've got half of the 10 books you show, I guess I'm off to a decent start on these given that I only started getting non-SF doubles 3 years ago or so...
  14. @batmiesta posted the other two treasuries, so I'll just hop in with the third. The three treasuries are the only Marvel HB books I own:
  15. All great books. I do wonder why Steranko ever only did one cover for Warren sometimes, though.
  16. Secret Wars #3 is first Titania, who is supposed to turn up in the She-Hulk TV series they're working on for Disney+. It may not be a good reason, but it's definitely a reason.
  17. Just happy I have a copy at all these days, at least it’s readable (with extreme care). Really wish Marvel would release a second masterworks volume finishing the run:
  18. I suspect that would be restored, not conserved, but that's a personal guess. Genuinely curious how much it would cost to get somebody to do something like this... I've got a Venus 18 in similar condition (it still has staples and a couple inner wraps are still connected) where it would probably be well worth getting done, even if it did qualify as restored.
  19. Only one I can think of off the top of my head would be mycomicshop.com; since I know they do carry back issues. Not sure how good an offer they would give you, but it couldn't hurt to ask.
  20. https://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=19694 I've read most of the issue, enough to feel comfortable saying it's pretty bad other than the cover. Everybody's tastes differ, though.
  21. I do, assuming you count me as "people". I know, I'm distressingly old-fashioned with my comics.
  22. Suspense 3. Not only is the book garbage other than the cover, it's not even the best cover of the run. (If I could have any issue of the run I would take Cole's #8 over Schomburg's #3 any day.)
