  1. Great (if gruesome) cover - funny how Fight Against Crime 20 goes for so much more, and the covers are pretty similar (yeah, I know, Fight Against Crime 20 is much scarcer).

Looks like a decent copy to me - what grade did it get from CGC?

Was wondering the grade myself. Classic cover, you gotta hand it to the artist as not actually showing a decapitated body even though that's what you're looking at. That excuse (among others) came in handy during the senate hearings. crazy.gif

A very good point - E.C.s imitators rarely understood the effect of implied or implicit horror (not that E.C. were that subtle themselves) and occasionally pushed the envelope too far, becoming too visceral, especially considering that we're talking about the early '50s, here.

Here's the cover to FAC 20.........

Very gruesome and sensational, and perfect grist for the Wertham mill.

Sadly that isn't my book......... frown.gif Not an item to show the missus, or any non-comics fan, for that matter.

  2. Arrived freshly-slabbed from Sarasota about 45 minutes ago. Thanks to Vincent at Metropolis for dead-on grading of the raw book. This is one book the vultures won't get their hands on to try pressing into a 9.8!

    dardevil26big.jpg

Why press it indeed? It's virtually unimprovable........

Killer book with a great cover, btw.

  3. Andy, I agree with your sentiments. The fact that it's a Harvey does give me pause, as that means that there are likely several dozen copies (at least) of this book floating around in vf/nm or better. Plus, it's just too pricey for me ar this time of year. My wife is anything but a golddigger (the fact that she married me proves it!), but don't think I could take the look on her face...I can see it now...

"Look honey, I got you this beeeeauuuutiiiful snowglobe for Christmas this year!! And by the way, check out this NM BCM #50 I bought for me! Shake that snowglobe! Shake it, shake it!!" insane.gif27_laughing.gif

Btw Andy, my slabbed Ghosts came in the mail yesterday, looks great!! 893applaud-thumb.gif

    thumbsup2.gif Glad you like it!!

  4.

I remember the last HG copy of this book that sold on ebay went for around $1100, which was tempting (it was a 9.0). This beauty is marginally too rich for my blood, and does give me the impression that there are a few HG copies out there, but I'd consider going for it if money wasn't tight.

  5. All Circle 8 books do not have the distinct mark. It seems that it is a pretty decent split between those that do and those that do not. In fact, I have a few Adventure Comics copies that do not have it, but they did come with COAs.

    thumbsup2.gif

Thanks Lantern - I was in the dark on that one. I do have one or two C8s in my collection, sold as such, but with no COA or pen mark - so there you go. Beautiful books with excellent gloss, nevertheless.

  6. As far as the icon pre-code books are concerned you're still going to pay well over guide (close to double) for copies in solid VG and above - but not multiples. What has happened is that collectors have noticed that most of these books are not super-scarce, with one or two exceptions (Mister Mystery 12 springs to mind). As for the common pre-code issues / titles, prices are indeed softer than they were.

  7. You're right I should have taken the full 12 hours, like MajorBlunder. I would have come up something more entertaining for you. It's a good thing we are here to entertain you, else you might have to go out in public.

How many hours did you take for that one? (Take a few more.)

Are you guys still having your little tiff? Remember, spontaneity is the essence of wit, which is a bit difficult to carry off on a message board.

  8. The single most telling smell. in my opinion, is not "musty" but "vinegary". A vinegar smell indicates acetic acid. Acetic acid is the stuff cast when paper begins to acidify. A bad thing. It means the book is already rather acid and, even with proper storage, will break down sooner than non-acetic acid smell books.

And if anyone here knows about the long term effects of acid it would be POV.

why???? did he used to "drop" back in the day????devil.gif

By the looks of things, yes.

  9. Thank you sir! I look forward to receiving it and will let you know when it arrives. thumbsup2.gif

On the Bug issue, I'm not trying to elevate him to some lofty position. I just got a little miffed that Brockley made a comment about him that he obviously can't respond to himself, and that I thought was unfair given how I have seen the CPG discussions to have taken place.

That's fair enough. I ought to check out the CPG boards, but I never seem to get round to it. Should be worth a perusal.......

  10. Why, because he doesn't back down when people call him names and he gives as good as he gets? Most of the people who argue with him can't string two coherent thoughts together and are nothing more than CGC haters who think that because collectors pay $50 for a modern in CGC 9.8, it is "all CGC's fault" that the entire comic industry will eventually come crashing down. Bug may be controversial, but he's one of the few people over on your board in the two sections I read (General Discussion and Professionally Graded Comics) who has the reasoning power beyond a third grade level. I don't spend as much time arguing with the CGC haters as he does, but I find them just as sophomoric. sign-rantpost.gif

There is a horrible liberal conspiracy going, of course, since that appears to be Marvelous/MMMmarvel/Bug's theory for everything, but we knew that. sign-rantpost.gif

most of my modding duties over on CPG are spent babysitting bugaboo, man that is a task in itself. 893frustrated.gif

So Bug's a giant among lesser men. So what?

Your book shipped yesterday, FFB. Lmk when it reaches you.

  11. 'Bout time somebody piped up and said that.....only a couple of hours ago I was reflecting about the hobby with a friend (who doesn't collect comics) both of us having just watched Comic Book Villains (an excellent flick, btw).

After I attempted to explain the paramount importance of grading and undisclosed/undefined resto in the hobby to him, we both concluded that I was insane.

  12. All that will happen is that collectors like myself will stop buying HG slabs.

EXACTLY the lunatic fringe I was referring to! thumbsup2.gif There probably isn't enough time left in the day anyway after you're done stepping over cracks in the sidewalk, storing and cataloguing bottles of your own urine and feces, and all those required bi-hourly anus checks to make sure aliens haven't probed you yet. Gotta keep all those undesirable, invisible bad elements outta your life! crazy.gif

I wasn't aware that slabbed books that may have been pressed could be that repugnant, but since you provide such a telling analogy, I guess you're right......

  13. That was just what he told me... I assume this was a dealer premium of some sort and this particular store used it as a prize in a contest. Probably many other video game stores received them also but under what circumstances I can only speculate.

Paul Levitz just found me one.

    BRILLIANT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW!!! That's the one I thought you would NEVER find... primarily because I thought I had them all hoarded in my basement... damn that Satan. Just when you think you've cut a pretty sweet deal with him, he stabs you in the back AGAIN. 893frustrated.gif

You did a deal with Major Khaos?

devil.gif All hail the Dark Lord Khaos! devil.gif

Clark, you did a deal with the Prince Of Darkness (i.e. Major Khaos). The question is, is the Dark Lord a benign ruler of the Stygian Depths (i.e. The Water Khooler) or is his wrath mighty and endless?

I only ask as I wouldn't want to offend the Great Naughty One when I come to ask for my box of Buzzy 70s. devil.gif
