Yeah I got to be honest, I just wanted some opinions on how best to organize myself for setting up at shows. But the answers have been very interesting and I’ve learned much more than I expected.  We don’t really talk about our buying tactics much here.

Not sure what is going on here. Cover has numerous ncb creases - they look like they may press out. The back cover looks nice. Interior has some sort of ink stains on 3 pages. One does not bleed through the other seems to have a dot of color except the possible bleed through is much deeper on the ‘bled through’ side. This one is conundrum for me. But because  I am keeping my ASM and selling everything else I will price it aggressively, I don’t mind keeping it. Really shines in Mylar. Ink I am guessing is production related. Not consistent with the distributer spray though which is spots of green

I’d like to go through some decent $20 boxes right now.  Someone go start a $20 thread

Hmmm....that's an interesting thought.  Is it against the rules to start a thread in the sales forum that would allow ANYONE to post a book that cost $20 shipped with the understanding that payment would be through Paypal goods and services.  I mean, are you allowed to let other people sell books on your thread and  mail the book to the buyer?  (sort of like ebay operates).

    If that's allowable...there could be a $20 thread

For me, it depends on the volume. Examples:

    • One LCS has about 10 long boxes, and if I have the time I will flip through them all.
    • A different LCS has about 50 long boxes and I would never even consider going through them.

Interesting.  I do agree with you that an insurmountable number of boxes can be offputting.  Perhaps because the buyer thinks, “if there is a bargain in there it shouldn’t take me long to find it”

Were you offering any kind of discount for hitting a quantity?

I don't really go to shows......but I remember as a kid, some of the places selling stacks of comics might have them priced at 25 cents each.......or 5 for a dollar.

Could you do that with you boxes at shows?  Maybe $5 each or five for $20?.......$10 each or six for $50?.......something like that to tempt them to grab a few extra?

I tried 3 for $10, but had better luck with $4 each. Makes me agree with one of the posters on this thread who said the trick is enticing them to start looking.

These were all recent $5 pulls -- all depends on what the books are as stated above --

We’ll the last book wouldn’t go in my $5 box (too cool!).  The Mr. Miracles would probably start out in a $10 box and be moved down quickly if they didn’t sell. I’m assuming there isn’t a key there…not a miracle collector.  The others are $5 or less (shooting from the hip).

Understand I accidentally sold a $300 book at my last show for $100…I will do some screening now!

I sometimes go through $1 boxes.  More and more they are $2 boxes now.  I've seen $3 boxes and $10 boxes but don't think I've ever seen $4 or $5 boxes. I would imagine your $4 boxes would work if the books were compelling.  What are you putting in them?

We've had a lot luck pricing anything old at overstreet and building 25% off boxes.

My plan/thought was to put items that would cost twice as much on eBay in the boxes.  The idea is to keep it compelling.  If something stays in a box too long, I would discount it.

Im hearing there is a market for $20 boxes. That’s encouraging. I’d rather give someone a great deal than have to individually price $5 or $10 books.

  8. When I go to shows, I skip over the $1 boxes because I figure there can’t be anything good in there.  Also because I generally attend shows for only one day so I need to be judicious about how I spend my time.   (Please hold your story about how you found an AF15 in one)

I occasionally set up as a dealer at small shows. At the last one I set up a $5 box, because I don’t really accumulate stuff worth only a dollar and one $5 box takes up 1/5 the space of five separate $1 boxes.

I received limited interest in my $5 box. Probably only sold 20 books out of there. Most of those books might sell for $10 shipped on eBay

I was considering expanding my selection of boxes…like maybe adding a $10 box.

Would these “non-$1 boxes” be of more interest to you or less?  Would you be interested in a $20 box that had discounted stuff or would you keep walking hoping to find a great bargain in the dollar boxes elsewhere?

    Thanks for your feedback

Got my package. Bumping a closed thread because I was very happy with my purchase. Avg grade was 8.5 to 9.0.

  10. I didn’t want this thread to disintegrate into a “when did it start“ conversation, but I did notice that the independent comic companies started up about that time.  Then the older companies (Dc, Marvel) had to respond to the new threat so they seem to create a lot of interconnected stories like crossover‘s, Crises on earths, secret wars, etc. To me when the copper age started depends on which kind of company you’re talking about. Those who pushed new territory, or those who responded to the corporate threat.
