  1. Keith, what happened to the pre-codes that you are referring to? Except for the ECs, I've never followed any pre-code books and I am unaware of the situation. And on another topic, I guess I see the potential rise in popularity of BA horror from two different angles. First, is that I'd like to see the hundreds of HG books that I've bought over the last year rise in value. On the other hand, I don't want them rising too much or it will limit my new purchases of the books.
  2. Oh I don't need Wizard to tell me anything. I was just pointing out for those interested in values that when the mainstream catches on, prices rise. I buy zero Modern books but I have subscribed to Wizard for the last ten years or so just to stay in tune with what's going on in comics today. Plus they do keep you informed about upcoming comic-related movies and other new projects and products. Certainly worth the $2 a month subscription price.
  3. FYI I'm not saying this means anything, but from what I remember this is the first time that Bronze DC Horror has made it into the Wizard price guide. I just received the new issue in the mail and there are a few prices listed for Bronze HoM and HoS, but no other Bronze DC horror titles. Selected issues and NM prices (no other Bronze issues listed in Wizard but these): HoM 174 $75 175 $50 178 $55 179 $75 HoS 81 $80 92 $700 The prices listed don't really mean anything to me, but just the fact that these titles were mentioned at all in Wizard shows me that maybe we are finally starting to get a little bit of attention from the mainstream as that is most certainly who Wizard caters to.
  4. Hey now, I joined these boards as somewhat of a Marvel Zombie, then YOU GUYS go ahead and brainwash me into becoming a DC guy, so I'm gonna derail this right now and get back on track with yet another Wondercon pickup: I bought this one from Heroes from their 50% off box. It was on their wall Friday and Saturday at full price but then put in the box Sunday where I picked it up.
  5. Just in case I want dupes, how much for the pair?
  6. OK, one last Wondercon WW for ya'. I figure that since this book has scary dogs on the cover that it may be considered "horror" although that is not what caught my eye on this cover. Just a VG+ copy I picked up for $8 since I liked the cover. P.S. take notice, this is the Women's Lib issue. Go get one fer' yer' girlfriends.
  7. Well, I just gave it a thorough examination. It would be a VF+ but I just noticed (hard to see) it has a 1/2" tear to the left of the "D" on the top left corner. I didn't buy this one to sell so it doesn't bother me too much. If it was a flip I'd be . But I'm really just now.
  8. Yup, those are the two WW books to own from the Bronze era. I picked up a #200 as well for $15 in about VF-.
  9. Nice scary cover. Reminds me on an Ingels EC cover. This would have gone to CGC but since it is pre'75 I'm not willing to send it Economy, so it will stay raw. Beautiful copy though.
  10. A nice copy but severe browning on the back cover. Cool looking cover.
  11. Who says Wonder Woman has no place on this thread? This is probably the only book I think I overpaid for at $35. Just had to have it. Don't see too many of these nice copies around.
  12. A few more Wondercon pickups. I love the way the ship captain looks here. Ship looks a little close to the island though. Beautiful copy also going to CGC.
  13. Speaking of the Stranger... another Wondercon pickup:
  14. Although I like the 100-pagers, it is just because they are big fat books. It's cool to see how much is jam packed into those things, along with bonuses and etc. But they are not the best looking books. Being split up into different segments takes away from the main image, and the smaller images are usually pretty stupid looking. I definitely prefer the regular 36 and 52 pagers due to the basic look of the book and cover art. But the 100-pagers are still cool for just being so full of pages. Certainly not on my priority list of books from this genre to have, although I will still buy nice copies when I see them for a good price. Here's the one horror 100-pager that I bought. Probably a 7.5 purchased for $19 from Redbeard.
  15. I agree with this BOC, except the 100 pagers, those are tough in HG, I didnt see all of Sid's haul, but I didnt see a HG 100 pager BA horror book in Pov's possession, I know I didnt get one. Between the 3 of us, I'm pretty sure we scoured the show floor pretty thouroughly for BA horror. Unless Ewert nabbed em on Thursday, or they changed hands between dealers. That's true, I don't think I saw any high grade horror 100-pagers above VF+ or so. The spines and edges on those books are so prone to damage by regular readers. Same thing with the dollar books, very likely to have dinged spine corners. Most of my haul consisted of regular 36 page issues along with some of the early 70s 52 pagers. I did buy one Unexpected 100-pager (can't remember the # off hand - black cover w/skeletons playing poker I think) but that one was probably just a VF, decent but no gem. I also discovered Star Spangled War Stories. I had never even heard of that series before, but it appeared to be in the same vein as Weird War, although I am guessing they are full length stories focusing on a main character. I'm not even sure, I didn't even look through them yet, just inspected for grade, but they are also from the same period and are pretty cool.
  16. Hi guys. POV and I really cleaned up with these books over there at WonderCon. Prices weren't too bad either. Thing is, these books are catching on, but they have not yet been hit by the masses, mostly just us horror guys getting even more into them than we were years ago. But slowly they are catching on as the superhero guys are starting to take notice at the books we horror guys are flashing around. Anyway, I believe that is why the prices, although much higher than a year or two ago, are still very reasonable at conventions. Early 70s books in high grade are pricing up to $50 in rare cases, but usually around $30-40 for early 70s and up to $20 and as low as $5 for mid and late 70s. I noticed a few other guys checking out the Weird War books and I think the war collectors may have a possible lead on the pure horror guys right now. Anyway, I bought lots of stuff, I'll post more up within the next few days. Here's one that I know you guys will like. Looks like a 9.2 to me and going in the "to be CGCed" pile for sure. . -----Sid
  17. Remember when I told you guys about this HoM lot above? I took a chance on it hoping that maybe I'd score on some of those lower issues. Didn't quite happen this time. As a matter of fact, I'm dubbing this lot the "Crust Pedigree". Although there were some very nice VF to VF/NM later issues (maybe ten) I'd say that more than half I would grade VC (Very Crusty). Now for the price I paid, keeping the ten or so and selling the rest, I can't say that I got a bad deal, but just didn't really score on this one. I still like to take chances though with these lots as sometimes you really get lucky. So with that said, here is the HoM #174 Crust Pedigree. Don't beat down the doors making any offers on this one.
  18. Thanks for putting that up Jim, that's interesting. I actually like the WCR #1 cover better though. Much better colors, it really sticks out at you, whereas the older cover is more muted and flat. Plus more detail (paintings, etc.) in the WCR issue. But ya' gotta give credit to the original, without that issue the improved version on the WCR issue would not have been. --------Sid
  19. I just got back from the ECCC where most of the guys who regularly participate in this thread would be quite disappointed. No high grade bronze horror to speak of at all. I bought a few VF/NM Phantom Strangers but that's about the best of anything I could find. With that said, I did spot this VF copy of Where Creatures Roam #1. I had never seen this book before but the cover is just outstanding, one of my new favorites from the Bronze era.
  20. Great deal. It's amazing the stuff we can pick up for next to nothing on Ebay sometimes. As a buyer I cannot complain, it's great. As a seller it's not even worth it sometimes.
  21. Here's my #4. Probably just a 7.5 but not bad considering I paid only $28 for the whole set. Nice cover on this one.
  22. I believe most of these books are original, and the art looks great in most of them. However (dare I say this) I am really not a Kirby fan and my least favorite when looking through the covers and interiors are the stories Kirby wrote (yes, WROTE) and drew. I'm not much of a reader and have not read these, maybe someone else here has and could comment. For Marvel Bronze anthologies, these books are pretty cool. Kind of pricy in the guide though. The set I bought is mostly mid-grade and was pretty cheap. Issue #4 is some kind of Conan prototype. Not that I could care less about Conan though.
  23. I just received a complete 8-issue set of Chamber Of Darkness that I won on Ebay. Kirby, Wrightson, Severin, this is one great little set featuring Wrightson's first work at Marvel in #7. This is my favorite of the covers #8, again by Wrightson.
