  1. Greggy, remember who you are talking to. You think any of us don't understand "packratting" comics?
  2. Greggy, from what I remember you said that you live in a very small apartment, like 700 sqf or something. With as many comics as you have in that small space you could probably consider them your roommate. I hope they pay rent.
  3. Geez, I've never counted, but as I sit here right now I count 35 stuffed long boxes. About seven are BA Horror with 4-5 being DCs.
  4. I paid $21 after the discount which I think is a good price for the book. $70 huh? Believe me, I've had similar purchases that ended up as big losses. We all go through that. I love buying on Ebay but usually don't trust the grades above 9.0. Most dealers are more apt to be accurate under 9.0 and less accurate over 9.0 so I can imagine that shopping for really HG on Ebay is tough. Sterl, are you going to San Diego or Chicago? That's where you'll find your HGs if that's what you are looking for. Don't expect bargains though as the informed dealers now have the HG Bronze horror in the "Mylar Boxes" and the prices reflect it.
  5. Literally FOUND? How do you file your books? Some people just have misc. piles laying all over the place and others are completely anal. I'm pretty organized and know where everything is but I never remember what actual issues I have, so I always have to go check to see if I have something or not.
  6. Geez, I feel as if I just got back from the San Diego con. Just received the mega BA DC horror lot from Sterling, what is that a 35lb box? Chock full O' goodness I tell ya'. With a cherry (Wonder Woman 100-pager) thrown on top for dessert. Nice books including some WWTs that I'd never even seen before. Thanks Sterling, some very cool books in there. That hole left in your house when these books shipped off just filled IN a hole in my place. One of my favs from the lot:
  7. A BIG Kudos to Sterling for the giant lot of mostly VF BA DC horror books that I just received from him.
  8. My wife is very supportive of my involvement with comic books but has zero interest in them personally. She does however idolize Lucille Ball and her show I Love Lucy. So what can I do? Buy her Lucy comics, of course. I bought her an original Lucy comic from the early 60s but I actually like the look and the covers better on the Eternity reprint series from 1989/1990 that reprint old Lucy comic strips. There were two black and white six-issue mini-series that were published by Eternity along with a color special. I like the covers as they are all artificially colored black and white photos, but they have a really nice look. Anyway, I bought my wife a six-issue set and I liked them so much I just bought another set for myself. Sets usually run about $20-30.
  9. All right, back to my favorite subject. Supply and demand of BA horror at large comic cons. Granted I haven't been focusing on this stuff forever, but I can speak from experience covering the last two Wondercons and the last San Diego and Chicago cons where BA horror WAS my primary focus. Yes, HG BA horror is available. Not necessarily alot, and certainly the best covers (which I believe is by far the #1 selling point) are hard to come by if you are lucky enough to see them at all. But some dealers realize this hot new genre and price these newly mylared books accordingly. Less up to date dealers still have them in the crusty bag and bent up board bins priced very low. Obviously these out of date dealers have mostly been picked through, but occasionally I have found great HG books at $5-10. Again, the same books keep popping up, whether early or late 70s with these more common books posessing the lessor desirable covers. Personally, for the few HG high priced books that I do see with my preferred covers, I usually pass on only due to the price. Since I only buy what I like, but also realize that sooner or later I'll be selling these same books, if I cannot buy it for a good deal less than I think I can sell it for I won't buy it, at least in most cases. For those wondering about the difference between SD and SF (POV and Jbud) as I've said before, take Wondercon to a factor of X10. No joke, Wondercon is the baby brother of San Diego and San Diego will have such a huge amount of material that it will be hard to see it all. Keep in mind though that the level of attendance comes right along with that. SD gets VERY crowded and competition between buyers and dealers is stiff. This can help or hurt us depending on what we are looking for. Due to budget restraints (and the desire to purchase "piles" of comics rather than just a few books) I usually just look for VF and up for prices between $5 and $30 and have had great luck doing so. This year may be different but several months ago at Wondercon I was doing fine with this range. In addition to the DC horror I also look for and buy the Bat books (Bat,Det,B&B) and find these comparable books to certainly still be more expensive than their horror counterparts. Due to the much lessor availability of horror to Bats I don't see this continuing for long. I realize Bat fans may outnumber the horror fans 10 to 1 but horror is starting to attract more and more fans (as we can see) and I wouldn't doubt if the horror starts to outprice Bat and other comparable superhero books soon. Again, this would be due to scarcity and new fans. Anyway, that's a combination of my experience mixed in with some speculation. I'll be competing with several of you coming up soon in both San Diego and Chicago for great deals on great books. But for those books with prices in the hemispheres (justifiably or not) I'll take a pass on those. It should be fun.
  10. POV, looks to me by that one poor scan that the "excess white" you refer to is the edge of the backing board.
  11. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=12592&item=6528949679&rd=1 Here's a lot that looks like an OK buy. Pretty good for anyone that may want the set to keep, a little too high to flip. Thought somebody here may be interested. He's also got an Unexpected lot but at a lessor average grade.
  12. As a competing buyer they may be a nuisance, but if you switch to seller mode realizing there are guys out there like this you can take advantage of it.
  13. I doubt that will be a problem with this crowd around....or judging by how quickly your previous books sold. You won't get any competition from me on those Marvels. Yeah, I grew up on WBN and TOD and practically ignored the DCs at the time. Now, I'm jam packed with multiples of those two series, have some Man-Wolf, Frankie, Morbius and Man Thingy but don't care for those Marvel reprints that much. The few original Marvel anthologies are OK but the covers just can't match up to the DCs, and since that is primarily where my interests lie, well..... no more Marvels for me. But if I see Sterling put up more Ghosts, HoM and etc., well.... the RACE is on
  14. Great batch of new graded books Sterling, all 9.2s to 9.8s
  15. OK, that's cool. I'll post the one of mine that Beyonder yelled at me about at the last Chicago con Forum dinner. Remember that Chris?
  16. Good one! You should start that thread. I know mine already... Go ahead and start it if you want. My "Forum personality" and growth have completely changed in the last year and a half, no need to bring up my old sludge. Maybe I'll add one of mine if I see others make fools of themselves first.
  17. I'm not gonna start another thread, but on a related topic, another good idea would be to post the link to a thread in which you embarassed yourself the most, or are most ashamed of. Goodness, there are a few that I'm glad are (hopefully) loooong forgotten.
  18. Litldvl, great report and very appreciated. Just shows that when coming from different perspectives the eyes pick up on different things. I'm like you, always looking for bargains but trying to stay in the VF- to NM- range for the best combination of price and quality. Nice list too with some serious bargains. Good job, you spread your budget out nicely. In my opinion you came away with a much better haul with your $200 than somebody coming away with five NM books and the same budget.
  19. Thanks Shivvy, I like those kinds of reports. What'd ya' get? I've seen the same thing at all the cons regarding pricing. Everything from 9.0-9.4s priced high in mylars from certain dealers to the same books in crusty old bags and boards selling for cheapo. It always pays to shop around. Of course the high priced versions for $40 always "look" better in the mylars, but don't pass on the "same" crusty bag books for $8. That's where I have found some of my best deals. Don't be surprised when you see certain books gone when other surrounding issues are abundant. It's all about the cover. I only buy books with cool covers. I'd rather have five copies of X with a cool cover than one each of ABCD with lamo covers. Not that they are really lame, but if it's got an Adams or Wrightson cover, I want multiples, Kaluta is hit and miss, many others I don't even care if I have one.
  20. Thanks for the large scans Nikos. I'm seeing art on these covers that I've never noticed before.
  21. I believe that the same actor was in everybody's favorite comic movie Howard The Duck as well. Since Howie was a BA character that sometimes dealt in horror themes, your topic, as proven by the Kevin Bacon theory, has now been proven to be very well ON topic.
  22. Cool, glad to see you guys agree. I was worried that I'd be slammed for dissing a sacred book.
  23. Funny thing is, HoS #92 is by far the most "famous" of all the BA DC Horror books and in my opinion is the worst Wrightson cover that he did on any DCs of that time period. The way he draws the girl pales in comparison to his other covers. I've got a mid-grade copy of this book but I didn't buy it for the cover.
  24. Just flipping through my Unexpecteds and came upon this one. Really reminds me of HoM #174 (above).
  25. I know, it's rare, but I agree with Jim on this one. The only reason I can see that someone would be upset that an auction in progress is brought up here, is if that person was hoping to keep it a secret so that they may get a better price on it. But since we are all pals here, I think offering a heads up to each other when a rare item comes up is a friendly gesture. I'm all for it.
