  1. Special Thanks to GACollectibles for an awesome lot of Gladstone EC reprints. These books are all beautiful and were shipped with lightning speed in a well packed box.
  2. Good post Brian. It is funny how a conversation like that can soothe the savage beast. But it is human nature to be that way, assuming the person "on trial" conducts himself in a mature and reasonable way. But does that cloud judgment or does it help clear it up? I'm not sure how the legal system works in this area, but before going on trial, and outside of a plea bargain, does the defendant and prosecutor meet up directly to chat and explain circumstances or to offer a defense face to face (phone to phone)? I would imagine that if the defendant is able to make a direct plea that is could affect the prosecutor emotionally, in one way or another. I guess that can be good or bad.
  3. I agree. I'll certainly buy this book, but as an art fan more than a story fan, I'm not that excited to see these stories in B&W. The color sets the mood. If these stories were intended to be in B&W, the pencils and inks would have shown more shadowing and detail. Just compare one of the Essential books to a Warren B&W mag and you'll see what I mean. The Essentials pale in comparison as they were never supposed to be in B&W. Still, for the money, I'll be buying one or two of these books.
  4. Hi guys. I don't want to try to push any books in this thread but I thought I would give you all a heads up in case you are interested. I just listed the Don Rosa copies of Limited Collectors' Edition #23 (House Of Mystery) and #32 (Ghosts) on Ebay with Buy It Nows. I have no idea what the demand will be on these, so if anyone is interested, here ya' go. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZsansc57803QQhtZ-1
  5. It seems as if many of us were referred to this forum from other members. Same here. After I had won an $1,800 lot auction from a devious Canadian Ebayer, Burntboy (Harry at the time) contacted me to warn me about paying this person, in which I was likely to be ripped off if I did. I had no idea who this Harry guy was, and I was obligated to pay for the auction anyway. So I did. Turned out later that the key book in the lot was trimmed and overgraded. I should have listened. So I contacted Harry to tell him that he was right, and I also mentioned another much worse scam that I had just been the victim of on Ebay. He said to join the CGC Forums as there were many guys here that could help or advise me with my problem. So I did.
  6. No I think you should show them all. Just a week or two ago we were discussing giving little reviews of the stories or focusing on other aspects of these books besides HG copies or often seen cool covers. Nothing wrong with that, but it is nothing new. Surely doesn't hurt anyone to post or view scans of nice looking books, and it's certainly nothing to complain about. But it may not hold the interest very long anymore for many of us.
  7. Duely noted. I do agree that making material readily available will have an impact. Time will tell. I'd like to complete my colection on the cheap anyways... I didn't buy these books to sell at profits, so it's all sunk money anyway. Well, we are typical comic collectors, right? Maybe more informed because of this forum, but more or less typical. So let's ask ourselves, if we were collecting a series, for whatever reason (just to read, to collect every issue, only HGs, only slabs, cool covers, etc.) and then a black and white TPB reprint comes out for those books for the first time, would it affect your desire at all to continue purchasing that same run or series? For me, no possible way. It would not affect anything. I may very well buy the TPB for the fun of it, but it would not in the slightest affect my desire to buy the originals. If anything, the only thing it will affect is the buying habits of those buying low grade reading copies, but possibly not even that due to the B&W. If anything, the exposure of the new TPB will create new fans who until then had not been exposed to this material.
  8. I think we are all strange to a certain degree...I'd prefer to say unique, or ecclectic. You are all my buds! Yes, we are quite the bunch. All nuts fallen from different trees, or sumthin'......
  9. It can easily be seen around here who sees things as the glass being half full, and those who see the glass as half empty. Not that either is more right or more wrong or more realistic, but patterns can be easily seen among us. I'm a glass is half full guy, keeps me a happy dude. When on occasion the glass does turn up half empty, well.... time to find another glass that is half full somewhere else.
  10. It could go both ways, and may just be a wash. Sure, there are some that just want to read the stories, but then again, you don't have the color with these reprints. It may just inspire new readers/fans to go out and buy the originals. Granted I'm not a reader, but when I have seen cool reprint books in the past, it has often inspired me to seek out the originals, as long as they were affordable to me.
  11. Hmmm... finding out about the legal ramifications of such a thing may very well be a good project for our very own friendly neighborhood newbie attorney, Mr. October.
  12. Thanks to Jeffb for a beautiful EC, Tales From The Crypt #35. Man, this guy knows how to pack as well. Great book at a fantastic price, couldn't ask for more there.
  13. Yes, certainly this thread has mostly been a "covers thread" where we show off our favorites and our new HG purchases. That's all cool, but I think what can be even more interesting is to read mini-reviews of various stories or issues. I'm really not much of a reader, more of a cover guy, but when I read a review of a particular story that sounds interesting, it makes me want to dig through my boxes for that book and read the dang thing. I'm all for giving mini-reviews accompanied by some kind of rating system for the story, 1-5 for example. It is even interesting to read a horrible review of a stupid story as well.
  14. I let PGX know about it and they confirmed that it was a 9.0 and offered to replace the label. I'll probably just send it back in with my next submission.
  15. Hey, not been around much recently due to my changing interests. I'll never give up comics, but I'm starting to focus more on collecting bass guitars now. Just bought four more recently. Anyway, just received my first submission of PGX graded comics in over a year. Nice job. Barex inner well, quick turnaround, very affordable and great packaging. Overall I prefer these guys over CGC, they just don't have the rep that CGC does which can sometimes affect selling prices. I sent in three of my Don Rosa books. PGX ended up designating the Don Rosa Collection status boldly on the label as well as sealed the COA in with the book. Material is so clear that I can't tell if it is sealed inside the inner well, or just inside the outer well. Very snug either way. I prefer this actually over CGC's method of not sealing the COA in with the book. Covers up most of the back cover but hey, I like them together as a set. Also, now don't laugh as CGC has made these mistakes as well. But check this book out. It is the first PGX 8.83. Top edge sticker also states 9.0. I just averaged the three numbers together to get the 8.83.
  16. Thanks to .5 (Point Five) for a very nice original EC book along with a reprint surprise. Thanks Jon. -----
  17. Yeah, I think alot of us have slowed down on the new scans. We all posted so many scans of new books for so long, it just seemed kind of redundant to keep seeing each others new copies of the same books. At least that's why I haven't posted much either, but I always like seeing other's scans, especially those very early BA DC horror books.
  18. Yeah, I actually remember that one a little. I liked that HBO series except that it had a bit too much of the light-hearted comedy touches. I like my horror to be dead serious. I know some of the EC stories had a twist of humor, but they went overboard with it on the TV series.
  19. Just received this book today from an Ebay seller in the UK. Got it for $50 under guide as well, and looks nicer than the average 6.0. However it's got a dang miswrap that I don't really care for. Probably my last comic purchase until Wondercon. I love this book though, one of my favorite ECs. The "origin" of The Crypt-Keeper.
  20. Certainly, my style too. That is one of the reasons I don't mind spending money on comics. Find them on Ebay for under market value due to a bad listing, inexperienced seller, large lot, good luck, etc. when you know that you can list it properly later on and make your money back and then some. So buying comics never seems like a waste and it is always fun. I just seem to buy more than I sell, so the mountain of books is growing faster than it is shrinking. Makes profiting kind of a mute point when it all funnels back in.
  21. I've been selling alot recently too. Just sold off most of my 7.0 and under BA DC horror just recently in small lots. I've kind of been going through a collecting change. Not buying nearly as many comics these days. I'm starting to get a little more focused on collecting bass guitars. I have four now, just purchased another that I haven't received yet, and waiting on word to see if I'm going to buy a sixth. I'll probably stop at eight before going back to buying comics. In the meantime I'm trying to lighten up the comic stash, buy more basses, then start in with comics again. It's funny when you think of either spending say $600 on a book(s) that will sit in a drawer untouched for years, or that same $600 on a musical instrument that you will actually use often. However, the comics will (hopefully) retain their value as compared to the instrument that immediately loses value upon purchase. Always a balance of things.
  22. Yeah, THAT one. Taught me a lesson to examine a book a little better before sending it in to CGC. Didn't even notice that tear as it was not started at the edge of the cover. Heck, I sold it to you for less than the CGC grading fee.
  23. This book may not be a "gem" but it is one of my favorite EC comics. Contains the famous "wife-swapping" story. Kinda' pushin' it for the mid-50s. Not bad for $30 on Ebay. Just received it today.
  24. Jay, No certificate. I don't know if the slabbed copies have them. Anyone know? I love the cover to 175, too! I definitely find the cover to 178 creepy. CGC keeps the "documentation" submitted w/pedigree copies (at least they have with all the Oaklands I've submitted). Otherwise, one could re-submit time and again with the same cert, but different books... I asked Steve Wyatt when I bought all my raw Rosa books how the COAs were handled when sent to CGC. He said that they DO return all the COAs. He said that they come back in a stack so that it is a good idea to write down which COA # goes with which book, otherwise you'd never know what goes with what when you received the slabs along with a pile of COAs when they are returned to you. At least that's what he told me if I remember it right. I realize that dishonest people could reuse the COAs, but on the other hand, shouldn't they always accompany the books? IMO the COA is more important than the note on the label anyway. I mean geez, what if you were to crack the slab? Would you need to keep the label as a replacement for the COA? I just sent three of mine in to PGX and requested that they return the COAs with the books. I e-mailed in advance to make sure they would notate the Rosa designation on the label, and they said they would.
