  1. I totally agree with you. In addition you have people like me who bought a few copies of early StarWars off the 7-11 racks when the movie came out. After getting my first job (paper route) in early 80s, I had $ to chase my hobby on a new "scale"... such as going after star wars cards and comics I was missing from the first series. If not for Star Wars, i might not have started reading comics again, and thus missed the collecting mania all together. I am not surprised this book is selling well as it ranks up there w other key Bronze due to large demand. The 25 yr rule should be kicking in for many folks, esp w Marvel so big on the Hollywood screen. For most guys in their late 30s into mid 40s, spending $50 vs $25 is a drop in the bucket to get a nice book you might have wanted as a kid.
  2. I was wondering about this as well... I wonder if they were initially worried that having the Superman comic AND regular Superman-covered Action would be too much...? But thinking about it further... look at what happened around Jan-Mar 1939: The newspaper strip launched, they moved to squash the competition with DC v Bruns, and they were prepping for the Superman comic -- and of course, by the end of the year there were monthly Superman Action covers. So that fits with the all sail and no anchor quote for fall '38. They were preparing to blow things up in '39, and they did. The machinations are fascinating, but looking at DC titles by month and year, it shows that Action wasn't the only title with alternating hero covers. January 1940 is the defining month where all titles switched to superhero covers with Detective 35, Adventure 46, and Action 20 starting that trend. If the Spectre had already been created, we would include the More Fun title, but his first appearance wasn't till Feb 1940. At any rate, there were no alternating covers on More Fun after 51. Same with Green Lantern as he simply didn't exist till July 1940 (although there was Ultra Man before him, but not technically a costumed hero). The last pre-hero cover or last gasp might well have been More Fun 51 or even Double Action 2, unless we consider an All American before #16. So it seems like an intentional effort for DC to go all hero, regardless of title, starting with Jan 1940. From what I can tell, Adv 49 (April 1940) w Pirate cover (in my top 3 fav) is prob last actual pre-hero adventure style genre cover for DC?? I would guess there is some pragmatic reason, such as covers were already drawn and paid for and in queue for publication.
  3. Could be they are playing the parts game and this was the last piece in the puzzle.
  4. I need a front cover for NY Worlds Fair 1939 Thx
  5. Piracy, Weird Science, Weird Fantasy, Tales from the Crypt, Shock Suspenstories, & Crime Suspenstories, Haunt of Fear, Vault of Horror
  6. The first temptation to overcome is not buying the comic. When that fails, the next temptation is leaving it in the cgc slab. The comic bug is tough on a man!
  7. Great books Larry! thx for sharing. EC are among my fav comics of all time. I always wondered how many more years EC could have sustained the quality had the Code and Distributor blackball not put them out of biz. Imagine having to buy back issues to complete Tales from Crypt up to issue 230...
  8. Nice pick up, but to call her a readers copy?? this book transcends such nominal terminology. Be proud of her! and consider yourself lucky I was tapped out of cash at the time, as I was bidding against you... : )
  9. yeah but you are kind of smart I have a particular bias to Batman, but I would probably go for an Action 1 ahead of a Detective 27 myself. A lot of people keep saying that, I certainly have my reasons for agreeing. I'm just curious, "why" all of you would pick Action #1? If I won the lottery Tec 27 would become the most expensive comic book.
  10. thats a collection to be proud of. It's not always about the value. A sweet collection of some really nice books! Congratulations. (thumbs u I ditto that thumbs up! Super nice books any SA collector would be proud of having. Finding a nice #13 is not easy... Hold on to that one!
  11. Unreal book!!! Congrats!!! Thank you sir!! (thumbs u I stayed home from work to be here when it arrived. Yes, I am a comic geek + proud of it!!!!!!!!!!! .....what a book. It doesn't get much better than that. This Gold Key book is all I've got to share.....GOD BLESS.... -jimbo(a friend of jesus) (thumbs u Jimbo your Solar#1 is rad as are most of the covers on these early SA gems... Wonder if they inspired Sternako ?
  12. Yabba dabba do! that comic looks new but its from 1942 I never collected Walt Disney before, but they appeal to me now that I'm old. I bought my first Barks not long ago. $ I use for my Adventure now has some competition. : )
  13. I see people wearing Batman, spiderman, or Woverine shirts as a fashion statement now days. If you did that when i was young, you would get egg'd and beat up. But, you could wear a disneyland shirt w Donald Duck and the girls thought it was cute.
  14. Me too, I bought my first Golden Age WDC&S issue, and I’m waiting for it. Contains one of my favorite stories ever, "Three dirty little ducks"… Welcome to the Barks club! It's pure gold in here! Thanks, going to read through this thread and pan for some gold! Will prob have to buy me some reprints soon - yet another genre of books to compete for my comic slush fund : ) Already got to enjoy the pic of Italian versions (very cool - Gracia Valliant)
  15. About 2 weeks ago I reached the highest form of comic collecting... bought my first FC Barks! California Gold - greatness in the form of newsprint paper and ink no pic yet
  16. I will add my newly acquired copy to this thread. Adv 46 is one of my fav GA covers of all time. Didn't think I'd ever own a copy, certainly not in this grade : ) I would have preferred a higher grade, but considering that Rubenblades was missing this book, Cage copy was a 3.0, and people w financial means to buy most anything they want have low grade copies, I was behoved to seize the opportunity to pick up this book. Now that I have it in hand, i like it even more! No regrets at all. You can see at sometime it had brown tape on the spine and someone decided to remove it. The back cover isnt too bad. It does have a qtr size piece missing from the middle bottom. For now I plan to leave as blue label. I suppose one good things is the simplicity of the cover would prob make color touch somewhat affordable if I decided to restore her. Adventure 46 by foxtrot70, on Flickr
  17. An AWESOME cover!!! Thanks for posting Every thread should have at least one post about Sandman or a Sandman cover !!
  18. Thrill of the hunt! Reminds me of collecting in yesteryears - now its surfing the web...
  19. I think both titles are some of the better comics produced, yet both are still cheap in perspective. But hey, who is complaining? I sure don't want to pay anymore to finish my runs than necessary. As long as I have collected, I think IronMan and Capt have always been in greater demand than the TTA line up. TTA are prob more rare, but demand on TOS is higher. I think IronMan sells TOS, but I am not a dealer, so I dont hear the voice of the customer enough to know if my hunch has merit.
  20. Wow what a beauty - how is that a 7.0?? I must not be able to see something. I always give graded books a 1/2 pt lee-way, but man Id call it an 8.0 from the scan. Anyway, congrats!
  21. What a great thread. PR and budget wise, Its only because of Cochran Box sets I was able to discover and read ECs in my early youth. Even in black and white, ECs are stunning comics! How many publishers can make that claim?? Cheers
  22. I was able to get a partial answer to ques i posed earlier in this thread. I didnt want to highjack the Flash thread where Centaur posted his Adventure Windex so posting over here. I saw that Adv 63 had a Windex rating of 19. That helps explain why Metropolis has the book called out as "rare" although I am guessing they are not pulling from the Overstreet glossary definition... prob anecdotal evidence from years as a high volume GA dealer. I dont own the Gerber books, so not sure if Adventure 63 had any kind of meaningful rating. Of course it really doesnt matter to me now as I have the issue, so box checked, on to the next!
  23. Our hobby, the title says it all ehh? (thumbs u
