  1. I am glad you won. I bailed out as it wasnt a high priority book for me. Like your self, the PLOD didnt bother me on this book.
  2. Sell me your Adv 47... you actually like that goofy dude in a purple/green leisure suit over iron man? yeah its a blue label w out tape or glue... not unlike my #46 I need to learn how to fix my sig line so I can add my TOS 39 and FF 1. My other trophies
  3. TOS 39 has really shown some nice gains over last few years. Also seems like gap btw beater and lower mid grade is closing. If new IronMan sales and mkt are still beating Spiderman, should a few more years before new/returning readers catch collecting bug and run this book into stratosphere. Glad I have my copy.
  4. Wowzers, one of my favorite End of the World covers, and by Everett, no less! Amazing cover! ...and the guy is bare foot and has to walk through all that trash. He needs to find a good pair of shoes ASAP.
  5. Funny, 2 yrs ago this book didnt even have a pulse. Don't worry your time will come. You will be surprised what you end up owning if you collect long enough.
  6. A big run of the Church Zips were put on CC last year. Details are hazy but I am sure some one knows specifics.
  7. I always liked this cover, feels early Tec, but w a super hero. Good catch Gino!
  8. Yeah, I kinda thought the same thing. Shield is great, but the Wizard is dorky... and he is too powerful. If I had been alive back then I would advise MLJ to dump the Wizard, and make a title focused on Black Hood, Hangman and Shield.
  9. Sweet!!! I'm going to go out on a ledge and say 6.0 from what I can see. Really nice book! (thumbs u Yeah I agree, i was thinking a fine condition. A perfect specimen from where I sit.
  10. IMHO the Zip Comics covers can give the Timelys a run for their money any day, for sheer schlock value, bondage, torture, propaganda, patriotism, and suggested violence. Ditto and the stories are 1000x better... Nice pick up Gino!!! any other treasures you need to tell us about?? Yeah yeah, I owe this thread a post myself.
  11. Totally agree. Paper quality, ink styles, art w more detail due to higher sales and budgets, artist salaries were going up. Marketing was making the product more polished, which took away from the feel from the prior era. End of the spinner rack. I am glad I was able to buy comics from 7-11 and grocery store. Many great memories waking up at 6am to ride my bike over to store so i could get first pick.
  12. This would make a fun thread... Signals to indicate End of Bronze.... Wolverine suit change End of Monster genre (ManThing vol2 cancelled 1981) Marketing gimmicks - Rise of the graphic novel and limited issue story arcs (secret wars etc) Sue Storm changes hair style to classic 80s.. way to go Mr Byrne! I had a list somewhere, but this is all i can remember at the moment.
  13. That painting is fantastic. If it was a Hellblazer cover, I'd be all over it. you know, its a funny response but it does show how far ahead of its time it was. You're absolutely right that it would look at home on hellblazer, and that's 50 years later! It's funny, I can see why pop or conceptual contemporary art might not be the comic art crowd's cup of tea, but I would have bet there'd be a lot of love for Bacon. Outside of his obvious impact on the art world, you can see traces of his influence on a lot of the more painterly comic art, IMO. I was LMAO when I read comment about Hellblazer. After a moment, I decided it was a modern tribute to Rembrandt.
  14. Hmmm Magneto and Prof X vs the all new all diff Cockrum/Clairmont Xmen... Not denying what Cockrum/Clairmont did to the X-Men wasn't fantastic, but they don't have the building blocks without Professor X and Magneto. Plus Magneto is one of the best Marvel Villains (I am entirely biased here). I agree. Perhaps if GSX1 introduced Wolverine then it would be bigger than Xmen 1, but it didnt... We really only get Storm, Warpath, Colossus and Nightcrawler. That isn't bigger than jean grey, cyclops, iceman, beast, magneto, angel and professor X. I think your biased because that Kirby fella had something to do w Xmen #1 But.... I still think the power of GSX 1 was the "synergy" of the new Xmen team. This was the rebirth-Boost of Hero genre. I know Star Wars was huge for Marvel, but Conan and Monster mags were not going to keep the lights on beyond the 70s. Im baffled how this could even be an argument... do a little experiment here and simply ask yourself or x-fans the following; would you rather have a sharp looking cgc 6.0-8.0 X-men #1 or a cgc 9.6-9.8 GSX#1..?? Literally every X-fan Ive ever asked immediately says X-men #1.. -nuff said Be baffled - I would take GSX in 9.8 over Xmen1 in Fine range. It is a good thing we all have different favorites else some comics would be worthless and others so expensive no one could afford them : ) This is true. Different strokes for different folks. I personally prefer X-men 1 if doing an apples to apples comparison value-wise. An X1 in 6.0 is equal to a GS1 in 9.8. In that instance it comes down to visual appeal for me. I'd take a gorgeous 9.8 over a fugly 6.0. (Of course I'd then sell it and buy a visually appealing X1. ) Well if they are the same value then that means the market demand implies I am not alone in my thinking. Also FWIW, the way I answered the ques was not taking value into account such that I would "sell" it. If someone offered me one or other and arrangement was that I cannot sell it, i could only return it, I would want the GSX 1. I really like that era of Xmen...art, stories, all the way up to the late 80s. yeah, Kirby is greatness, but the orig xmen is prob least favorite SA key next to Spiderman... yeah, I just never got into spidey like other folks, but I did try... bought new/back issues off and on for 10yrs. Even had AF 15. I think what really killed spidey for me was Secret Wars 8... just down hill from there.

  18. I like gsx 1 over x men 1. I don't like the x men that much. Thor is more important to me in the marvel U then x men characters besides wolverine IMO. Ditto - GSX 1 is more of a key to me as well. to prior post ques, I did bump Xmen 1 over TOS 39, and this coming from a IronMan fan for 40yrs! Now I did own most all xmen from 94 up at one time, so I do appreciate Xmen all the same. I think Xmen #1 is like TTA 27, wout TTA 35, it is nothing. Wout IH181/GSX1, Xmen 1 might as well be Atari Force.
  19. I agreed w Gambit for most but made some of my own changes. (top 3 are no question!) 1) amazing fantasy 15 2) fantastic four 1 3) hulk 1 ---------------- 4) x-men 1 5) tales of suspense 39 6) journey into mystery 83 7) amazing spiderman 1 8) fantastic four 5 9) Fantastic four 4 10) Avengers 4 -------------- Honorable mentions in no order Strange tales 110 Avengers 1 Daredevil 1 Tales to astonish 27 Tales to astonish 35 Fantastic Four 48
  20. Is it just me, but seems the best Flessel covers have Snow or Jungle?
  21. I have never read any of the GA Shadow, are they any good?
  22. Beautiful book, with the introduction of the Hourman it looks like Sandman was considered a second banana as not only was he not on the cover but his stories were in the back of the book and Hourman in the front. I don't have the earlier issues with just Sandman but I wonder if he was featured as the lead off character then. i think it had more to do with moving away from the pulp hero into the new formula, which was anything but pulp hero. The later move of having S&K revamp Sandman seems to support that theory. IMHO the orig Sandman was as good if not sometimes better illustrated and written than Supes/Batman. Sure I will offend some, but just a preference and you can see from my sig line I am biased.
  23. Karl, just came across this thread, WOW, you are talented! And your inking is equally impressive. if I could pick one cover or interior... man this is not easy.
  24. I agree and I could not pass up the deal i got on this puppy. I had been on a GA binge for the last several months, after seeing Dan's copy started looking again, and was surprised at the price levels vs a few years ago. Sticking to my buy low game plan, i pulled the trigger. FF annual #1 by foxtrot70, on Flickr
