That's funny, the first comic store I remember was a guy who was running a head shop and had some comics in there. First underground comics then later other comics. He ended up just becoming a comic book store a bit later. Probably better profits and safer to sell at the time. This was in the late 70's early 80's.

Right.  When people starting saying Fair Market Value the instance of buying at 2021 prices was brought up.  I would assume if you bought at 1650 and current GPA or GoCollect is 3000 they would give you the 3000.   I would hope the ask for the receipt is in case the movement is the opposite direction.  Though to be honest if they just said they would pay out GPA 90 day average or GoCollect fair market value people who wanted another copy could conceivably go out and buy one in the current market whether the market has gone up or down.  The books manipulated in this way aren’t exactly scarce are they?  (Other than MJ inserts I guess?  No idea, they aren’t in my focus, though to be honest none of the books manipulated in this way are in my focus as far as I know.)

Just spit-balling but what about people who paid at the height of the market, who's books are now worth less? My inclination of the benefit of the doubt with CGC, is if you bought at the height under the understanding that the CGC label was legit, you'd still get compensated....
I'm not sure that it is the current FMV or like insurance at all, if it is only worth $3000, but you bought it for 5k, I would want the 5k if cgc has any true guarantee

Thank god the thread is finally slowing down.  Gives those of us who came in when the thread was hundreds of pages long a chance to finally catch up.  The concerns I have, other than the myriad of concerns already mentioned are (and if I missed where they were mentioned forgive me.  I’ve tried to read everything, but am sure I missed some posts)
    1)  If someone had a way of “manufacturing” green labels and lower grades into blue labels and higher grades wouldn’t that mean that the prices of green labels and lower grades would be artificially inflated and blue labels and higher grades were artificially depressed?  Do we know how many books (other than the vague 350) are possibly involved?  What percentage of the market of specific titles and or issues do they  represent?  Do we need GPAnalysis and GoCollect to somehow note on books that have had a heavy presence that there may be shenanigans in the prices of that issue?  Or do we have to just wait until this blows over to get a feel for the natural level of some of these books.
    2)  Again how long this has been going on might be in the threads somewhere, but as someone who has bought only one book in the last couple years it would be nice to know when people in the know think this all started.
    3)  Much the same it would sure be nice to know all names/usernames used in this.  At least the people most central to it.  I know everyone is scared of lawsuits.  But I imagine if the perpetrator has a lawyer his concern is elsewhere right now.  I’ve seen one Instagram? EBay? username and one comic shop linked to this but no confirmation.  This only puts those of us NOT in the know at risk.  Especially if there is a board name/board names associated to this.  That would put some of us who use this forum some peace of mind.
    4)  Finally, even if there is no information that can be shared at this point from CGC it would be nice to have some kind of timeline to when we might get more information.  As I stated previously I haven’t added to my collection much in years, but prices are finally getting down to where I could think of picking up something again.  Needless to say I’m reluctant to until I know more.
Like most, I’d like to add my kudos to the board and YouTube detectives who have uncovered all this.

thunsicker reacted to Number 6 in Is this the new eBay grading system? Fine/Fine+ ?
Well, you see something similar in book collecting:  “has defect x, y, z else Fine”  So in other words the book is actually a Very Good to at best a Near Fine copy.  I think the reason for it is (besides the salesmanship puffery of it) is because book grading terms are fairly broad. You can have one copy that is a VG copy and looks it because of a cumulative amount of small wear and another copy that at first glance looks like a FN condition but has a couple of defects the are pronounced enough to drop the technical grade. It’s their way of saying ‘presents like grade x but because of these defects drops it to grade y’.

I think the problem with the example posted is that without the prominent cover tears and chipping it still wouldn’t look like a fine copy.

It’s definitely not a swipe, a homage at most, but the classic GA cover it is always compared to is Detective Comics 31:

I personally don’t think it’s a homage, but given that Steranko’s a comics historian I can’t rule it out entirely.
