  1. I am constrained by my moderator role to never escalate beyond snarky. Despite rumors to the contrary, the over reaction wasn't necessary as feedback. I was just toying with solutions before a meeting and ran out of time to tweak it. I would think that by now people would know that we configure the boards flexibly in a sort of collaboration with what the members want (within reasonable limits). I mean, the whole reason I was doing anything is because you guys asked for it. So yeah, I kind of find the over the top reactions uh... tragically silly? But entertaining! If that's any consolation for being tragically silly... Did I make it underneath the snarky line, or did I crest over into cranky?
  2. We could do something like that. The banner I did was easy because it's within the admin capabilities of the boards. I'm trying out a few solutions that don't require customizing the message board code, as that would make future product version upgrades more complicated.
  3. I apologize for failing to be with the program. I don't drink coffe though so I'm relaxed. That's good. Maybe a nice herbal tea now and then?
  4. Annoyance level of new banner: 15 Approx number of users seeing it: 1000 Total annoyance: 15 x 1000 = 15,000 Possibility of prevention of scam, flame wars or heated threads: 0.08 Annoyance level of any of the above: 500 Number of affected: 100 Total Annoyance: 0.08 x 500 x 100 = 4000 Ergo: lose the banner. SUMMER GLAU (Inspired by XKCD.com humor) at http://www.xkcd.com/406/ Measurement of the over-reaction of some members on the rhicter scale to having to look at a temporary few pixel high notice... I dunno. Something high. Relax. Drink less coffee?
  5. Sure, but all the books, scans, prices, and dealer website links were still there, so I assume the Mods took a dim view of his *closing*. The individual thread just isn't that big of a deal. Often times we won't pull something just because it's a violation. The ensuing community discussion - IF KEPT CIVIL - is valuable to the community coming to a shared understanding of the guidelines. The "damage" of one aging thread that falls off the front page with some violations on it is minimal as long as the poster understands the issues and doesn't repeat them.
  6. The Dale thread is borderline in terms of guideline violations. Let's set aside judgments about whether there are actually duplicate books here or not. I assume they are duplicate books. However, what matters is that we don't want a situation where everyone and their brother lists books here and on ebay and they all claim that they're duplicate copies. We would have no way to determine whether the rules were being abused or not. The purpose of forum only selling was to identify unique buying opportunities that couldn't be found elsewhere. This is because the marketplace was becoming redundant to searching ebay, and there wasn't much point in that. People wanted a place to offer unique deals to each other as members of the board community and to be able to spot those as separate and distinct from simple advertising of run-of-the-mill sales. That having been said, I can fully understand why someone would want to use existing scans for identical grade books. It doesn't seem out of line, but it does make keeping this marketplace a good resource to the community harder, so I think we need to come down on the side of wanting scans, when provided, to be uniquely offered here. I know that can be a hassle / lots of work, but I don't see a way around it while keeping the marketplace oriented towards its intended purpose. The appropriate response in the thread is to quote "the template" - I LIKE the idea of doing it as a PM first. If that doesn't work, post it in the thread and notify the moderators. The appropriate response if you're skeptical that you've violated the guidelines is to PM me and/or make a post here in this thread asking for clarification and community opinions. Thanks, Arch
  7. This had nothing to do with Worldsbestcomics.
  8. Well, I'll name names. And the first name would be mine. I'm pretty certain that Richard is talking about me. And he has a good point. Even if he's not talking about me, I'm guilty of what he's saying. So, for my part, I apologize to those of you who feel like Richard does. It's easy to get caught up in trying to move stuff and to forget that after a round or two, others might be sick of seeing the same old stuff. I also apologize for having two threads on the front page at the moment, as I didn't mean to do that. I think what skynwalker said, happens to the best of us, and I applaud him for the apology...I know I've had OLD threads bumped by someone else and I was embarrassed to see two threads on the front page. I don't deliberately do that, but it happens. What was bugging me, was that Comic Supply listed some Marvel Masterworks, with a LINK to his Website, and then in a separate thread, he posted Overstreets, with a link to his website, both times, the books were being sold for the same price ON the website...I know, because I looked, figuring maybe this was a board special. He must have been asked to move the Overstreet thread, because he did that, but then posted a 3rd thread, advising people that the thread was moved to the Dealer thread. SAME thing happened last year...and to me, stuff like that is deliberate, and just a total disregard for people who at least TRY to play fair. I really do not need to have another spat with him, but I figured, I'd just spit it out... Are you guys using the notify moderator button in these situations and writing a GOOD EXPLANATION of the issue - i.e. enough background information that a moderator can comfortably take action without spending an hour trying to duplicate your knowledge of the pattern?
  9. Yeah, what exactly are you looking at that is a guideline problem?
  10. Added a suggested "reminder" letter to the guidelines post. I'm not sure if people will like the idea, but it might allow everyone to help keep the guidelines alive without things getting personal.
  11. So you believe that his next post of this nature still belongs in the ebay/other area, and does not represent a forum-only sale?
  12. What, no comments on this? http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2110588&page=2#Post2110588 You guys are getting complacent.
  13. well he did have a linked excel sheet with grades and prices. And I don't think the intention. Is to sell them at the show it's that now is a convenient time to get them from storage since he'll be digging around anyway for the show. Thread in question is currently in the ebay and advertising board.
  14. It's worth discussing / clarifying. In a sense his post was a forum only offer with a deadline of Saturday, with special forum pricing. I can see the mentality there. However, I can also see that this could be a blunt instrument inventory advertising vehicle for dealers in general if we let it go. The 25% discount makes that less of an issue, however, it would be pretty easy in the long run to just mark things up 25% to mark them down 25%. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
  15. I have edited in your self-posted point totals... because I'm a nice guy, and because you guys are lazy. :P If we post updated scores with your questions it'll be really easy to maintain. That way, at some point we'll declare an official reset and there can be something like a weekly winner or whatever. What do you guys think? A weekly reset?
  16. post your updated score with your question.
  17. Feel free to give hints if there's no answer quick enough, and if you want, you can arrange for someone else to be the judge by having them agree to do it, then posting that they are allowed to choose a winner. Just make sure you tell them the answer once agreed so they CAN choose a .
