  1. Added a guideline around trade offers: Added trading rule: If posting a trading thread you must list a dollar value price for the book that you WILL accept in TRADE VALUE, and you MUST put "TRADE ONLY" in the title of your thread if you will not accept cash. Thoughts? Objections?
  2. So is the ability to quickly filter the thread feed by words. Like "hulk".
  3. BTW, the ability to add a sound alert when the feed detects a new thread is pretty cool too.
  4. That's awesome, Arch! Is there any way you can get rid of the 'Posted by' line, so you just have the thread title? That would tighten up that screen quite a bit. No real layout control here, no. Bear in mind that viewing the RSS feed as a web page is a pretty raw way to see it. Really the best view would be in an RSS reader and/or plugin. Here's a review of some firefox plugins: http://mashable.com/2007/05/26/rss-firefox-guide/ So I've been using this wizz rss plugin on firefox to see how it feels. To be honest, it's awesome. It's almost faster and easier to navigate sales threads than if you were doing it on the boards. It shows you which ones you've read and which ones you haven't, it displays them all in one big list, it lets you click on them in the menu and jump right to them on the right. I have the RSS feed set right now to only link to whole topics rather than responses, and I -THINK- that is how you guys would prefer it as it's the for sale initial thread that seems to have the good info. But really, this is cool / easy. Attached is a screen shot.
  5. Sounds a bit reactionary. Why don't you just give it a chance for a week or two.

  7. I have noticed that the top-level display that shows how many people are currently viewing a forum does not seem to show the number of people viewing those sub-forums. Slightly annoying as it doesn't really show the extent of traffic that is actually going on.
  8. e.g. http://boards.collectors-society.com/cache/global_rss70.xml
  9. Cool! . . . 1st one I clicked on was a WTB Yeah, right now the feed is all marketplace stuff, except for OA (including ebay, etc.). It's easy enough to make one for just the forum-only for sale stuff. Better that way?
  10. Really? Is everyone seeing what I'm seeing? Looks like nonsense. You probably have an older browser that isn't formatting the RSS for you. An RSS reader or a browser upgrade will make it more legible.
  11. If you'd like an easy way to see all sales threads mixed together, there are two easy ways to do it. FIRST: Make yourself an activity stream These are cool because they can be configured all kinds of ways, and are smart enough to recognize things like what content you have already seen, etc. Once you have made one, you can also grab an RSS feed of that specific activity stream if you prefer RSS. NOTE the fact that you can also make that activity stream (or any activity stream) your default (It replaces "Unread Content" in the upper right if you do that.) Below is a screen shot of one way to configure an activity stream to see all the relevant marketplace activity. The second way to get a list is to use the premade RSS feed you can find under the RSS symbol in the lower right. Screen shot attached that shows you where to find it. Happy shopping / selling / trading!
  12. Post a reply here to get a mention of your sub-forum thread here on the main forum.
  13. Post a reply here to get a mention of your sub-forum thread here on the main forum.
  14. Post here if you have a sale in the misc forum that contains forum Copper / Modern age books and you want a mention here.
  15. Post here if you have a sale in the misc forum that contains forum Golden / Bronze / Silver age books and you want a mention here.
  16. Adding a guideline to avoid reposting any books for at least a week after the original threads goes up does seem like a reasonable idea. Comments appreciated.
  17. Thought about that, but that's true today as well with just regular for sale posts.
  18. Generally, the theme of the forum only trading was the idea that members generally due to a sense of community and a level of trust, could buy and sell books to each other in a very low hassle way. 1. They could avoid service fees from intermediaries. 2. They might give each other price breaks out of the joy of collecting when trading within the community instead of outside of it (goes to a good home kind of thing). 3. A shared sense of rational pricing and grading so you didn't need as much reputation management etc. as provided by tools like eBay. 4. Because of the presumed "fair price" shared understanding you didn't need the whole auction format, etc., and the complications it brings. I'm not in love with the auction format in general because of the shill encouragement that I think would be likely. It seems like the reverse auctions fit the spirit. It also seems like an auction with a hard stop at a stated price would be maybe ok? So you have an auction, you state a BIN fair price. If the auction rises to the BIN level, you sell to whoever gets there first. It turns auctions into a way to unload books that you want to get rid of, but you may not get the full price... but you don't care as long as you're selling to a boardie... ?
  19. I'll be the first to admit that I really only look at problem threads rather than trolling through lots of threads looking for minor violations, but I always get a sense of urgency and anarchy from your posts on the topic, divad, that I have trouble tracing to any substantial practical problems. I click around a few threads and I see mostly scans and prices, etc. etc. I've heard a few times that everything it going to hell in a handbasket around here, and maybe I'm missing something, but I'm having trouble seeing it.
  20. We've had alot of discussion about multiple versus consolidated threads lately. Part of the problem is that there is no real sense of a community guideline on when to split threads and when not to. Post your idea of the guidelines for when to break up threads and when not to. Perhaps we'll have a vote after we have some options. I imagine that the criteria should be built around something like: 1. Total number of books being offered 2. Total number of categories of books being offered and some examples of "separation worthy" categories. 3. Anything else you think is relevant.
  21. All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing. If someone outright lies (as well as changing it multiple times) then of course I'm going say something, and I am asking Arch to reinstate the thread so we all see exactly what transpired. I have nothing to hide, but Dale certainly does. Arch, if you reinstate the thread allowing this ridiculous schoolyard squabble to continue, I will PM you 5000 times a day, every day, Christmas included, for the rest of your natural life. Nobody other than Dale and JC gives a spoon. Zero chance. Let it go, guys.
