  1. I expect marvel chipping to be treated/graded the same way a chip/piece off is graded. If CGC is grading pieces off differently then marvel chipping that would be an issue. But I don't believe they are. Which is why not having published grading standards leads to posts like this.
  2. Grading colleges should have strong athletic programs to support the "arts".
  3. For me and when I'm selling a "chipped" copy the bottom line is that this is paper loss. It is reflected in the grade and unfortunately it causes your eyes to be drawn to it unless there is something else more pronounced on the book. The hobby has put a name to it because they know what caused it. If you could identify every time somebody tore a piece of the book I'm sure we would have a rippedoffis stigma out there.
  4. "The Market"? So basically it doesn't matter that CGC factored in the chipping and graded it a 6.0. "The ambiguous Market" felt it was a 5.0? How does that make sense? Or are you "the market"
  5. The real poll is Paper loss versus Other defects when it comes to what copy you would buy. This is not a one off answer. Put the marvel chipping/paper loss on the back cover and does the book get the same dreaded marvel chipping stigma? If that 6.0 had a chunk off the back cover and still graded a 6.0 would it get the marvel chipping stigma, probably not. I've got lots of personal perk lists to pull from over the years. Front/back cover defects, staining, paper loss, marvel chipping, staple placement.
  6. "All joking aside, I’ve never understood not downgrading a book for marvel chipping. It seemed to defy the visual test " That is not how I understand what you wrote and since your opinion seems to carry a lot of weight with the buying public that could be interpreted incorrectly. Rick says should be the new thread.
  7. Ok, so for you a 6.0 without paper loss is more desireable even though there are some out there that might not like those particular defects, could be staining for example or large writing. For others I get the feeling that they feel this should be in a 4.5 holder because of the paper loss assuming CGC doesn't downgrade for chipping/paper loss This is the same thing the hobby went through when label notes were on the book. Some people felt that the notes such as an arrival date or writing weren't reflected in the grade while others (CGC/dealers) knew that they were.
  8. Ok, so lets stop (GATOR) saying that CGC doesn't downgrade for chipping (Paper loss).
  9. The only argument you have is that you personally feel CGC doesn't downgrade the chipping enough based on how much paper is missing. I don't know, does that 6.0 on comiconnect look worse then a 6.0? Or does the general buying public feel that with the amount of paper loss the book should not grade more then a 4.5? Stop calling it chipping and call it what it really is, Paper missing.
  10. I am not sure why chipping is not looked at the same way a piece off the book is looked at. Chipping can be measured, you add it up and you have an amount off the book. Chipping is no different then a piece off, only difference is it is along the edge of the book covering more ground than a piece missing just in one place. To say that you won't buy a "Chipped copy" basically means you won't buy books with any pieces missing
  11. Bought a Hulk #181 9.2 off the boards, smooth transaction
  12. Will you buy a book with a 1 inch by 1 inch corner missing or piece off the top back cover?
  13. I've just talked to CGC about this This is absolutely NOT true "All joking aside, I’ve never understood not downgrading a book for marvel chipping. It seemed to defy the visual test " CGC downgrades for marvel chipping using size measurements on how much chipping their is.
  14. Don't you have some facebook photo's of you not working to post?
  15. So you feel that the 6.0 copy that sold on Comiconnect was not downgraded for marvel chipping? I completely disagree because if the book didn't have marvel chipping it would have graded a lot higher.
  16. You have to cater to the top 10% of your customer base
  17. What people should be asking not just about AF #15 but all big ticket purchases in general. What level of buyer are we currently seeing in the big ticket markets? When a Big ticket book is bought unless that buyer comes back in looking for an upgrade they have met their need and move on to the next book. As they say Next batter is up. Where in the A through F list do they fall into? Have the easy sales come and gone? Are the big ticket purchases collectors or dealers restocking their inventory for upcoming shows? Why do certain big ticket books constantly show up for sale again and again? Not so easy to sell a book when you get lower in the pool. I'll use the Big Screen TV analogy I believe I used before A - Wants to be the first on the block to have one, doesn't care what the price is. B - Sees the Big screen TV but waits for prices to come down a bit. Somebody has to go first before this buyer steps up. C - Waits for the sale before buying one, needs a deal D - Is buying the big screen from clearance stores F - Beer wallet but champagne tastes, this one is waiting to win the lottery before buying one
  18. Since I was the person who sold this copy let me say this. The consignor did make money on it even after the commission.. Without the marvel chipping it probably would have graded a 7.0+. It has really nice paper, had very rich colors and frankly the biggest detractor was the marvel chipping. But as I said to the consignor auctions are impersonal. There is nothing but a description and two pictures to go on. With all the chatter about how bad marvel chipping is the rest of the book is ignored. Without getting into a should it have been sold on a dealer website or auction house it should have sold for a better number then it did.
  19. Wow, I guess Gator has been appointed the AF #15 key analyst/spokesperson. His keen eye and all that wisdom. I gotta hang around him more.
  20. Bob, I'm not exactly sure that is CGC's interpretation of what a bindery chip is. Clipping it off doesn't seem to to warrant it automatically being assumed to be a bindery chip.
  21. There is only one pimp and that is supapimp who I never see on the boards anymore.
  22. 1Cool nailed some copies at pre-movie announcement pricing even though he claims he is a "seller" now. Was smart not to make offers. Another buyer bought the remaining pre-movie pricing. The rest were sold after I listed the rest of the copies I had at post movie pricing. Yup, those "collectors" really wanted multiple copies of 1 and 2. I even got a email from one "local" guy wondering where my AS #263's all went. It is amazing how great your customer service is when you are handing people money by selling them books they can flip for $100's more.
