To me, it's more about how awesome our hobby has been over the decades.  At one point, an "expensive" comic would only pay for some trivial frippery.  Then a few would cover the cost of a car.  Then just one would cover the cost of a very nice car.  Now, one could cover the cost of a very nice home.

For those of us who started collecting comics because we just loved the things, it has developed into an amazing economic windfall.

I love reminding my siblings, who don't have a collecting bone between them, about this!

    BUT THE INSURANCE PREMIUMS!

I was honored and lucky to have met Kevin Conroy at a local comic convention show several years ago thanks to my buddy who owns the company Celebworx. They bring in special guest appearances from TV, animation, movies, voice actors etc. to conventions in the nation.

One of their clients was Kevin Conroy who happened to be at the show. I think it was the Stan Lee LA convention in downtown LA. I managed to get my Batman:Animated Series master DVD set signed by him and Lorin Lester (voice of Robin). It was one of the best days for me in a comic convention.

    @circumstances

I had Google searched the title if the book (+ 1945) and only saw 1 copy previously sold.

An eBay listing from Dave Reynolds from a few years ago.

Just checked heritage and between 2006 thru 2019, 6 copies have been sold.

    3 sold in individual auction.

1 copy mixed unto 3 separate auction lots.

Couldn't find the comic connect auction you referenced in sold itens but than again. CC's search function is very finicky.

Didn't know there is a 5.5 and an 8.0 in the census, but I'll take your word on that.

That said, I would still think it's a relatively rare book....while I'm sure they're around, at less than the handful of recorded sales the two of us are aware of and the 2 slabbed copies being under 10 in total,  that's fairly uncommon, imho.

I've found that the 2 (or 3, can't recall offhand)  Lichtenstein Young Love and Young Romance early 1960's swipe books are a dozen to find, but I'd contribute that largely to their odd numberings making searches harder.

And prize books must have been lower printed than dc romances from the same approximate time period.

Here's a post of mine detailing the Lichtenstien swipe from this book for Mr. Bellamy with 2 links to images, which were originally posted by David Barlasou, 20 years ago...for those unfamilar with that name, Barsalou is an art historian who is widely considered to be the foremost expert on Lichtenstien swipes.

I seem to have been one of the very few people who knew this book is a Lichtenstien swipe, prior to my addition of this book to the Lichtenstien swipe thread on this board a few days ago.

This book seems to be possibly the rarest Lichtenstien swiped source book, I purchased this copy graded at 2.0 by MCS a couple weeks ago from my Mycomicshop saved search notifications and had it held for consignment with MCS.

Upon pricing this book, I saw there have been NO OTHER COPIES of this book in any grade than this GD 2.0 copy, sold at Mycomicshop , per their sales history on this book.

Considering the volume of comics that Mycomicshoop buys and sells, I think that is a pretty solid indicator of the relative scarcity of this book.

After about a year of waiting, I did manage to luck out and get a hit from my ebay saved searches back in July, I snagged that copy via BIN/BO soon as I got the notification from eBay and it's in my PC. May have it slabbed at Baltimore this weekend but probably not as I doubt I'll find a third copy. and I collect Lichtenstien swipe books for my PC.....lightning doesn't strike three times, especially now that the cat is out of the bag and I won't be the only person I know looking to buy this book any longer.

    i've seen quite a few.

two folks have had their copies slabbed (an 8.0, a 5.5).

heritage has auctioned off three raw copies (all different grades).

    comicconnect auctioned a raw 4.5.

    they are around.

I'll say Special Edition Comics 1. (I used to own a copy but currenlty don't, so I no stake in its value increasing.) Granted there are a lot of copies around, particularly in mid-grade and below. But an 8.0--one of the top 11 graded copies--selling for only $13K earlier this year? First appearance of one of the great GA characters and one who is still around? Seems crazy low given what's happened to GA prices in the past couple of years.

whose first appearance was in Special Edition #1?

Same here. Every time I saw one sell I'd be like :pullhair: because, if I had the money, I'd have been willing to pay far more for it. Now, I could afford one if it sold for the mount of last sale. lol Not going to happen. Last one sold in 3.5 for $27,500 in 2017! Wow. Arguably the first appearance of the first Timely superhero, 1st appearance of sub-mariner, and insanely rare. What is not to love?

Cool page showing first appearance in various media of superheroes

    Exactly

I had a Flash book that had no picture, it was also a #7.

There was an eBay seller and at least one board member whose books were pictured in the guide. Gerber went to their homes.

I was very impressed when they told me about that...but it makes sense, where would he find all the pictures.

He had great connections and knew a lot of folks in the collecting and dealing community.

He never asked to photograph my books!

I was told to get those many years ago and I did...I learned a lot from them, loved the pictures and spent way too much time searching for some books.
However, as eBay became bigger, I found that his numbers were not always so accurate. Atomic Bomb comes to mind as one of those. If I recall correctly it was a 10. I had 3 copies at one time.

People were just looking in their closets and listing "rare" books.

There is no picture of the Champ Comics #20 I posted earlier today and he gave it a 7, which I always found odd. *shrug*

Plan your exit while your young.  This is phase one for me, most of my S.A. collection goes in phase two.  Phase three will be letting go of the few I keep until then. (thumbsu

the plan has always been to slab and auction it all shortly after i retire (whenever that may be).

a mini-retirement job: liquidating the comics.
