  1. Here are my X-Mas comics. Love the massive size of these...hate that CGC doesn’t have a holder that fits. These might have been posted already, but lots of dead images/links in this oldie-but-goodie thread.

Not easy to find these suckers in decent shape, by the way. Pricing sticker is on the bag, not the book, for issue #2, for those who grimace at the sight.

Any idea how tough it is to find a Flash 98?

I know a fellow collector who has been looking for one for awhile, or is it relatively common and he's just having bad luck?  hm

It's not easy. Not as bad as tracking down a decent copy of 99 or 95...and not nearly on the level of 96, but certainly not easy.

Here's a list off the top of my head of the last known sales:

Superman Ashcan $90,000 (changed hands this week for $83,000).

Wonder Woman $57,668 (changed hands in 2003 for $17,250)

    Action Comics $50,000

Double Action 1 / Double Action 2 (the pair sold for $80,000 last year)

    Fawcett Thrill 1 $41,040

    Action Funnies $21,000

    World's Best $21,000

    Fawcett Flash 1 $20,000

    Superboy $16,250

    Supergirl $16,250

    All-Star $15,600

    DC Flash $11,500

DC Flash ~$20K in May on Heritage. Long a grail of mine, as a Flash collector.

I thought I would revive this old thread as it relates to my question. I recently picked up a Startling Comics 10 in a small collection and thought I would ask the community if this book is still considered hard to find. I see there are 14 copies on the CGC census and will probably end up sending this one in eventually.

    Yes, very challenging book.

    +1

In full agreement with you in terms of GL 30 here and maybe one of the reasons why Overstreet continues to have this particular book designated as Rare in his price guide after all of these years.  Especially if you are comparing it to other mainstream DC super hero books.  (thumbsu

Glad to see that you've got the highest graded copy after all of these years of slabbing. :applause:  Makes me wonder if another higher graded copy will eventually show up in the marketplace.  Especially since the Church copy was only originally graded by Chuck as a Fine copy which probably means more like a VG+ copy in terms of today's apparently tighter grading.  Not sure if there are other pedigree copies out there, but there is not a Larson copy as the Larson List indicates no GL's at all.   hm (shrug)

Mine isn’t the highest graded, just the best I’ve seen for sale. There’s a 7.0 and a 9.6 in the census. I believe the Verzyl estate owns that latter one. I forget if it’s a ped copy or not.

Tough run to assemble in any reasonable shape, that GL.

Interesting, I missed that.  So, I guess that explains why they were nervous about what the hammer price would be.  And, yes, ashcans haven't really participated in the upswing in GA prices, as far as I can tell.

I think they’re awesome. I wish the timing on the Wonder Woman and Supes copies were about 6 mos. from now. I’d have tried for those. So cool.

I was referring to not rare in terms of actual existing copies not how hard it is to find copies today in the market. I’m both a fan of Streak and Toth and put together several sets of the issues I mentioned (30,34,36,38) over the years and these have always been popular with collectors. #30 is at least a slight “key” book and there have always been collectors wanting that issue more. I know a number of Rex the wonder dog collectors also add the Streak issues into their “dog” collections too. It’s a cute dog cover as well making it popular.

Good info though. I didn’t realize that some of those issues are now tough to find in the market...

Yeah, I like the “critter books” too. I had to pick up Streak, Krypto, Bullet Dog, etc. some time ago.

Yes, those books are all fairly challenging to find in decent shape. Has been that way for at least the last 5 years. I can’t speak with much certainty before that time period.

I don’t think #30 and #38 are rare by any means but #30,34,36 and #38 are all popular and quickly left in collections when obtained. You can debate if it’s due to being Streak covers or drawn by Toth (I think both!). #30 gets a bit of a boost too for  being the first appearance of Streak and collectors have always been drawn to those last issues of series in the GA.

I put together a GL run. 6.0+ and no resto. Wasn’t easy.

Strongly disagree with you on #30. That’s a rare mainstream book. There are a couple beaters floating around, but good luck getting a VG+ or better copy. I bought mine in ~2014. It’s a 6.0, and it’s the best I’ve seen since (and the best I had seen at least 3 years before). The census only has four copies at or above grade. I agree with you on #38, though -- not all that challenging, relatively speaking.

GL #31-33 and #36-37 are rough. Particularly in grade. I think #2 is fairly tough too, though there are ~30 in the census.

On the All-American, I can only speak to #89-102. Those are all tough, if you want a decent copy. #89 is challenging in grade. Very tough, in fact. #102 is probably easiest in that set, but certainly not plentiful. I adore that part of the title. Under appreciated.

I know this is a very old post, but its such an impressive hunt for Flash comics!!! I'm new the boards though and if you're still out there fellow Flash fan maybe you would help me sponser a dedicated general Golden Age Flash thread?

@tabcom put together an awesome thread a couple years back, chronicling and contextualizing every issue. Happy to participate if you pull together another Flash Comics-focused thread. It’s a great title, and I learned a bit through my hunt.

I have to start off saying, I am not particularily a Flash or DC collector per say, but I do pick up what I think is scarce stuff when given the chance. About 5 years ago, I was given the chance. A huge GA collection known locally as the "Paul" collection surfaced in the LA area. Most of them had "Paul" neatly written small on the cover. I got friendly with the buyer of the collection and was able to get into it first. The DCs that I hit first were the later issues of Flash, All Flash, All American and Green Lantern since I knew they were pretty tough to find. I grabbed all he had and most were there. Other than All Flash #32 that I've had a couple times, I haven't seen many of these since. These are all "Paul" copies.

The 92 isn’t all that challenging (relatively speaking), but it is super-awesome. Four great books there!

When I put together my run of All Flash plus the Black Canary issues of Flash Comics ( 86-104 ) the two toughest issues to find were All Flash 32 and Flash Comics 96. Neither book is truly rare but both are very tough to find in mid grade or better.

I agree. Those are the two toughest. I’ve followed those titles pretty closely for 6+ years.

Flash Comics isn’t an easy run, particularly if you’re looking for copies in grade or unrestored. There are about 10 more issues I’d list as “tough” but those two take the cake.

Took a stab at the Brundage Bat girl.  Already own one but someday this should be up there with Action 1 in my estimation.  Lol.  Seriously though, what impact if any did the trimming have on the hammer price.  Is it as harshly judged in the pulp world as the comic world?  Should it be?

I put some bids down on this one too. Like you, I already have one, but it’s such a cool piece. I’d like another. And another.
