Surprised this book hasn't shown up as the best LB Cole cover. I've always considered it to be the peak of his work. For me, it's Cole's Cinderella Love 25 (which is also conspicuously absent).
And this is Marc Swayze's masterpiece to me:
And I think this is Hal Foster on the cover, in which case, this is his best "comic book" cover, IMO

That said, I was even more warmed by the love given to my Chicago pal Sharif who went with me, with virtually no knowledge of pulps. Every time I left him to his own devices while boring other attendees with Johnson inquiries, he would come back and tell me of this person or that who approached him and welcomed him to this little world and engaged his curiosities.
Sharif ended up winning two lots at the auction. I had to restrain his bidding hand a couple of times and he was a little sad to leave because he was initiated so kindly. That tells you a ton about this crowd!
Sharif was a blast to hang out with. Hope we get a chance to do it again!

That's Gene Carpenter's booth .... You should see what ISN'T on the wall ... GOD BLESS...

Gene is great. Lots of fun helping connect him with a buyer on some cool early Peanuts books. Next time, I have to look at his stock closely early because he had a lot of nice books.

It was really great to see @catrick339 again. He always has great stuff. Unfortunately, I'd already spent most of my allowance by the time I came back around to their booth. Picked up a nice Dell Dime novel from him.
Otherwise, there was a lot of action between dealers on Thursday night during setup. Friday was very brisk with good attendance but Saturday was much quieter. Really fun to meet @Ricksneatstuff in person and talk about common interests. One of many fun moments of the convention for me. Jim Steranko was sitting next to him inscribing a book for someone while we talked.
Also got to meet @comicjack in person and was really cool to put a face to the name after all these years. Spent a lot of time hanging out and talking with David Saunders, @Stevemmg and @PopKulture, which was a blast. David is such a knowledgable guy about pulp illustration art. I can't even imagine the conversations he grew up around, with that group of artists his father spent time with. @PopKulture came up with a fun game that we'll have to play a few more rounds of, next time we meet!
So many great guys (young and old), fun to hang out, discuss common appreciations, learn about new things you'd never heard of, show interesting finds that you made. It really is the best show I've been to in the last few decades.
@Surfing Alien @manetteska @mwotka and anyone else I'm forgetting,
Thanks to all for spending some time and sharing stories!

I don’t suppose anyone here bought some Matt Baker books at the show….
If so, I'm super happy for them. If not...

It's been a fun show so far. They're having the auction right now which has some really sweet pulps and other items in it. We ran into @Surfing Alien @mwotka @PopKulture @manetteska and a couple other board members I'm forgetting (apologies). It's a great room with centuries of knowledge and experience with Pulps, Paperbacks, Original Illustration Art, Comics, Magazines, Digests, Hardcovers, and much more. Very mellow and friendly bunch of guys and gals and so much to look at. A person could spend a lot of money in that room!
Looking forward to tomorrow! Have to stop by @catrick339 and say hello again.

Just seeing everyone setting up last night, there's a lot of amazing material here. If anyone is nearby and thinking about it, I highly recommend this show.

I like car analogies. And as such they are extremely debatable, but for me, Kirby was a Jeep, the workhorse of WWII, incredibly flexible and functional and would eventually become the first of a whole new class of vehicles that we call "SUVs" today; but Adams was a Ferrari, revolutionized and dominated racing with unparalleled performance, redefined what the intersection between style, design and automobiles looked like, and made you feel special just looking at one.

That's why I have been on the fence for a while about sending it in for the removal. I've seen the removal returns where the area is just cut out of the book. That's a big reason I don't send in my first Bat-Mite which has a piece glued on but presents beautifully.
I was considering it for my ASM Annual as I am changing some collection goals and think an unrestored 3-3.5 would be easier to sell.FWIW, I would pay more for a purple label without removal than a blue label with pieces cut out. To me, the only thing worse than restoration is restoration removal.

Wanted to make this thread as I am looking to send in my Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 in for restoration removal. The restoration notes label it: Slight (C-1) Small amount of glue on cover of spine.
You are aware of what this will look like afterward, right? You may not be glad you did it. That's a great book and I hate to see it further damaged.

At this point, I'm just happy because I'll be able to afford a copy of ASM 101 again.
Apologies to anyone that stocked up on them speculating that they would make a bunch of money on the success of the film. The best time to sell is now.

It strikes me that a person who wasn't above defacing the back cover wouldn't be afraid to put a fake signature on the front cover...
But isn't it better with color?

I don't recall the death of a comic book artist affecting me as much as Neal's passing has. I spoke with him on a couple of occasions and he was incredibly friendly and had a broad smile that lit up the place. His work played such an important part of my love for comics from my earliest years. I remember reading a beat up copy of Giant-size X-men 2 and being swept up in one of the best stories I'd ever read to that point (I was a whole 7 years old, I'd been around). Over the years, I kept finding more of his work from the 60s and 70s and being enthralled with it.
When I discovered the wonderful world of comic magazines, I was thrilled to find so many examples of work, both covers and interiors, that Neal had produced. It felt like a hidden treasure trove and I couldn't get enough. Truth be told, I still can't. I never grow tired of looking at it.
In celebration of his life and work, here are a few original art pages of his work from Creepy 14 (not mine, taken from the internet):

What I notice is that any copies above a 9.0 don't usually come on sale that often that may warrant a slight bump when one actually does come on the market. I have not seen a 9.2 go on sale since the start of the pandemic, which is why I am having a hard time trying to get a fair market value for it.
I agree. And I can't remember ever seeing the single 9.8 selling. I have to think that's at least a $50k book.

I definitely agree with this. There's so much going for Vampirella #1 that even with the price spike since the start of the pandemic, I still feel the book is undervalued. Vampirella is iconic and has a pretty strong following. There's definitely a lot of room for this book to grow. I always see this book as the AF15 equivalent for magazines.
I seem to remember that @oakman29 calls it the Action 1 of mags. It's definitely (in my mind) the most important magazine. Much more so than Savage Tales 1 or any others. But I'm extremely biased.

Still, for books from that era, and as popular as it is 70 copies in NM- or better is a very small population, comparatively speaking.
It absolutely is, compared to say Green Lantern 76 (150ish copies) or Tomb of Dracula 10 (750ish copies) or any other major books of that same time period. Which would absolutely justify stronger prices.

You guys may be right. I'm more of a "supply and demand" guy (not that it makes any sense in today's market) and here's what the latest census looks like. More than a few 9.2s out there.
My guess would be that a 9.2 would go for $8kish and a 9.0 would sell for $6k, an 8.5- $5k. This after an 8.0 sold on eBay recently for around $3,800. I tend to think that as grades approach the top, the curve is somewhat asymptotic. But again, I could be way off. Maybe a 9.6 would sell for $35k now. We won't know until there's another one sold.
There is someone asking $8k for a 9.0 on eBay right now (BIN or BO). Will have to watch and see if it sells.

Based on these recent sales, would it be fair to peg Vampirella 1 CGC 9.2 at around $10k if one gets auctioned today?
I would probably peg it closer to $8k but who knows? I'm looking forward to seeing the next sale as another data point.
By artist, what do you consider to be their masterpiece?

LOL! Great minds think alike, at the same time, apparently. That's a very pretty book!
