  1. Tim, here is the GL 1. Not the best representation. The paper is a little wrinkled. When I get into my office I’ll see if I don’t have a better copy.
  2. Already 96 books listed in the auction.
  3. I took photo copies of most of my books, as I did the GL 1. It really doesn’t do the book justice. Don’t remember what auction. If I find the catalog I’ll LYK. Isn’t it fun looking through those old catalogs. If only!!!!
  4. Thanks for posting those Tim! The 123 had white pages and had eye popping colors. I was surprised when it came back a 9.4 as the cover had a tear on it. It was on the opposite side of the spine 1/2 way up the book. It was about a 1/4” long and maybe a1/8” wide into the book. It was a rectangular tear top to bottom maybe a 1/4”. I’ve looked really hard at the scans but can’t see it but it was definitely there. I heard that Forbes bought it, only what I heard.
  5. I just remembered thinking they must have spent a small fortune on mylars. All the books were in them and the keys were doubled. It worked the books stayed perfect for a long time.
  6. From what I was told Michael was the one who made contact with the OO. He is the one I dealt with. From what I understand Stu has passed.
  7. Mike, Stu and another brother who I don’t remember his name were all recipients of the collection. Their father made Michael split the collection among them. That’s what I remember being told.
  8. Maybe I’ll tell you what I know about the Pacific Coast Collectin!
  9. So let’s fast forward a bunch of years when along comes CGC. I submitted a GL 40 from the collection that came back a 9.4 with white pages. I’m following the CGC board and I see a Western Penn pedigree wow what’s that? I called Borock and he tells me it’s a collection that originated in Western Pennsylvania that Tom Brulato and his crew have lobbied for a Pedigree. It appears that my friend sold a lot of the collection to Sparkle City who flipped it to Brulato and Ewert. I got in Borock’s ear and told him I know exactly where those books came from and I have many of the DC’s. I was told that he would have to get in touch with my friend to verify. He did I resubmitted the GL 40 and got the WP Pedigree designation. End of story hope you all enjoyed. Brought back a lot of great memories!
  10. Tim, I was going to say that but the Pep 22 and the 7 were missing. My friend was the one who bought the Church books, not his dad or the OO of the collection. Hope that clears things up.
  11. Oh the DC’s the wonderful gorgeous books that predated that Marvel . Out comes Showcase 34, 35 and 36. Brave and the Bold 34, 35 and 36 and my favorite book that I really wanted to see Flash 123. Ye ha. Tim on the boards tth2 bought some of the books. Never pressed comicbook goodness! I worked out a deal to sell some of the collection in return for a discount on those beautiful DC’s that were still there. As I was leaving there was a table with books stacked 2 or 3 feet high. My friend said hey Tom take anything you want. There were 5-10 Metal Men #1’s and more that I don’t remember. I’m not into freebies. Great experience that will probably never happen again. More later!
  12. So now I’m getting upset having to look at all of this historic comicbook goodness. I want the DC’s. But it’s not time yet. I have to sit through AF 15 NM/M, FF1 NM/M, TOS 39 NM/M, HULK 1 NM/M and DD 1 NM/M. Thank god the Avengers 1 were stolen out of the collection so I didn’t have to see that. So now it’s time for the DC’s?
  13. Lost track a little. So after I saw the monkey and the electric eel we went to the living room and were watching the Twilight Zone and showing off books to each other. His brother was there and had some nice books but I really wanted to see the DC’s. Off to the comic room. Their house was an older home with a turret built on it and that’s were the books were. Start with the Church run of Pep and Shield Wizard. For some reason they had a fascination with MLJ. He handed me a stack of Pep comics and they were gorgeous Church books that ended up in the Gerber Photo Journal. Then along came CGC the books got graded and there was one that graded lower than the others. That’s the one I dropped out of the stack of mylars that he handed me. Oops!
  14. The collection was put together by a father and son who had a passion for comics. The father Golden age and the son into the Silver Age. I was told there were pristine Golden Age books in the collection but I never saw any. But I have no reason to doubt what I was told. The father passed and the son George continued on with the collection. He was single, lived with his parents and worked out of town. Didn’t have much to do with his money but spend it on his collection. He was a very early participant in the comic fandom movement. There was almost a complete run of fanzines in the collection and I had the opportunity to catalog them. Amazing stuff from the beginning of fandom. So onto the meeting at the Comic store. From what I remember the OO had gotten into some legal problem and was selling books to pay for an attorney. when my friend went to the OO’s house to look at the books I can only imagine how he felt. He worked out a deal with the OO and bought the entire collection for $7K. A lot of money at the time and he had to talk his father into lending him the money. I’m not sure if I would loan my teenage son $7K to buy comic books but He did and he filled the family station wagon many times transporting the books to his house.
  15. So, we would talk on the phone and laugh our asses off about nothing in particular and joke about how the Marvel Bronze Age books were never going to be worth anything! I got an invite to his house, packed up some of my books and headed northwest to Pittsburg. What a great trip. First time I ever saw Mile High books, sorry Church and comics piled in stacks. I had a House of Mystery #1 that he thought was a Church book but I sold it before it was ever verified. After checking out his monkey and electric eel which he told me about and I thought yea u r full of it. No way that’s why I believe what he told me about the collection! IF YOU ARE GETTING BORED LMK AND I’ll FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO!
  16. On with the story! So after I bought the GL 1 and Showcase 43 I rang him up on the phone and Asked “Hey mister you have any more books to sell”! I’ve got balls. It turned out he was a generation younger than me maybe 1.5. It was the beginning of a beautiful relationship! Except he was a Marvel geek which didn’t turn out to bad since he was more inclined to let the DC’s go. I would say we became pretty good friends.
  17. Just went through and counted a few popular titles late 60’s. Iron Man 1 - 4 copies $475 each IM and Subby 1 - 8 copies $150 each Submariner 1 - 2 copies $160 each OO’s probably bought 10-20 copies of each!
  18. This catalog was put together much later after the majority of the books were sold. Thee OO and his father would buy every book every month and some times 5 or 10 copies of #1’s. Remember when they were 10 and 12 cents? I do and there were a lot of comic fans that were upset when ther raised the price to .12.
  19. Anyone ever hang around the comic shop when they were younger just checking out all the great books they could probably never own. Then the door opens and in walks an older guy with a stack full of those books in NM condition. Who had the balls to go up to the man when he walked out the door and ask “Hey mister you have any other books you want to sell”?
  20. No rhyme or reason how they listed these in the catalog. Guess they wanted you to search through all 104 pages. There are 5 pages of Daredevil later in the catalog but the 7 is listed on page 1!
  21. 104 Pages of comic book goodness This catalog was sent to me years after me first seeing, buying from and helping to sell the collection. Many of these books were sold on eBay.
  22. Western Pa catalog sent to me with an offer to buy the rest of the collection!
