  1. I was in a mood to start but it ended up being a good time. Sold a few pieces of art and bought some as well. Had a great time at the end just hanging out with friends and meeting some new ones. The social aspect is probably my favorite part of this show.
  2. I think that Moyer never had a stand out season or accomplishment beyond that 2003 feel good year is what really kills the comparison. Sals runs on Hulk and Cap are definitive to many people, as is his spectacular spidey run among others. Nothing stands out about Moyer beyond longevity.
  3. When you look at the output of Sal compared to his compatriots, the Moyer comparison makes no sense. It isn’t just the longevity, that’s just one factor. It’s the total quality output ,spanning more generations than nearly any other artist, and doing it at a high professional level new fans could get into over the decades. For your comparison to work, Moyer would have needed more like 369 wins in that time with a near 3.00 era. Would a 369 win 3.00 era pitcher go to the hall of fame in your opinion? He is more aptly compared to Nolan Ryan who I think never won a Cy Young or MVP and most of his career he wasn’t an all star, yet is still remembered as one of the best for his overall body of work. The biggest problem I’ve always had with the “he was just there” argument is that it doesn’t take into account why he was “just there”. As if anybody who felt like it would be fun for a while got to be a professional paid marvel artist. Like it’s no great feat being asked to work for decades on premier books. That they were just handing these things out and he happened to “just be there” when they were. It’s always a fun discussion though. I’ve enjoyed seeing all the people (even his haters) talk about their favorite era or book of his. I personally became a fan on his New Mutants and then Spectacular Spider-Man runs, although I’m now more drawn to earlier Hulk and Defenders work.
  4. Again, it’s an Al milgrom gets equal pencilling credit on the story and full inking credit. It’s an Al page mostly with Starlin contributions.
  5. The messed up part is that’s not even Starlin full pencils. It’s like 1/2 Starlin 1/2 Milgrom with full Milgrom inks. It’s more of a Milgrom page than Starlin.
  6. I sold a page from that story just like 3 years ago for 3k. It wasn’t as good yeah but both were on there. This price, even for this business, is somewhat hard to understand.
  7. Maybe it sold for less originally? It just says sold/removed, hoping someone didn’t lose 5 figures that quickly.
  8. :::takes off Artsoc committee hat::: nah, it’s all good. I believe Sal is one of the more important artists in Marvel history and rather talented and consequential. We have had others rather strongly disagree in the past on this. if you read though again you will see it wasn’t directed at you, it was mostly about the perceived value and desirability of his art. I’m a believer in it being rather nice overall and worthy of higher prices when compared to other examples of the era. :::puts back on ARTSOC hat:::
  9. :::Takes off official Sal Buscema denigration ARTSOC hat::: My auctions pretty much thuded. I had three covers sell. One broke even, one made like 500 over, and to be fair one sold for huge. However in total the more expensive bronze and copper age cover art is what lagged (which shouldn’t IMO) and the modern cheaper cover killed but considering it’s lower value and desirability it wasn’t enough to overcome disappointment. I did score a decent 80s liefeld marvel page for around 750. Wasn’t in market but it was one of those trademark Rob pages with 4 vertical panels like you saw in new mutants and xforce so it just sort of clicked a little.
  10. You know…It’s like ARTSOC doesn’t even matter to you people anymore. I mean, we have spent YEARS now denigrating and putting “The Average” in his place, yet this…keeps…happening... We had agreed many moons ago that “he who must not be praised” art was throughly unremarkable and pedestrian. Completely “average at best” and with no great importance or desirability. The science was settled! And yet here we are…again…having our unquestioned expertise being completely ignored if not outright rejected. 46k, before tax no less, on a freaking 90’s COVER?!? Are you people even trying anymore? The out right scorn and derisive commentary about “The Mario Mendoza of comics” has been sorely lacking on this board for the last few months, hence this disaster was sadly very predictable. We expect more from you people and are throughly disappointed in the movement right now.
  11. Well my three pieces are coming up tomorrow, each with a lot of watchers but still catastrophic low. Hoping for auction wars lol.
  12. I have one thing in gallery and only because tons of people know I own it. If I hit one of my island hits I’ll post it, otherwise radio silence.
  13. I have this piece by Joe in my office. It was for some marvel project back in 2000, lithos and what not. It’s like 24x32 or something like that. It looks great close up and from afar IMO, not sure what he was going on about. Maybe he just meant that one image? Cause his work when done large really holds up IMO.
  14. Ok so let’s say 800k, the original art is only worth 5x a gem mint copy of the first version, don’t see any issue with that price when compared that way.
  15. What’s a Gem Mint PSA 10 or BGS 9.5 of the alpha lotus sell for, 400k? The artwork is apparently worth 10 gem copies from its first version, doesn’t seem unrealistic at all on that level.
  16. - (x) is not happening, you’re wrong/bad for suggesting it is. - Maybe (x) is happening, but why do you care? It’s wrong/bad of you to even mention it. - (x) is happening and it’s a good thing. Anyone who questions it is bad and must support (random bad thing) and therefore shouldn’t be listened to cause they are (random bad thing). Someone pointed this dynamic out to me. It’s helped me understand a lot of the events of the last 10 years in our global culture.
  17. So it sounds like Terry still has a lot of his own art. We’re now in the semantics game of what does “a lot” mean. Mitch, in your estimation did Terry keep at least 40% of the art he got back from X-men? I only ask because you seem to be willing to speak about the maximum quantity of pages he still has (albeit somewhat vaguely). A similar statement about the minimum number of pages he has would be helpful.
  18. I’ve heard the same thing. Someone on here crapped on that idea but I don’t remember any specifics as to why it was wrong. Terry sold a few pages but overall the story is he kept the strong majority of it.
  19. I think in general we’re heading into some dark waters culturally and social media is reflecting that. We are becoming less and less capable of handling/engaging in disagreement in a stable manner because we’re becoming more childlike and irrational. The idea of hyper clannish heavily moderated/censored groups with much more banal content is probably the way of the near future because it’s the easiest path forward. Eventually this will lead to a whole new sets of issues and concerns for those groups but that’s tomorrows worry.
  20. I think I remember this also being from the 1992 Christie’s art action that brought all Alex Schomburg art to market.
  21. I can’t read that and not hear his southern drawl accent in my mind. I still have no idea why the hell he swapped out that pack, like wtf could have been in an 81 Topps BK pack worth blowing your self up over?!
  22. If you told me Keith Giffen drew this I would have 100% believed it.
