Tales to Astonish 92 is the Surfer's first x-over but only in cameo and has Submariner on the cover. The next issue,  Tales to Astonish 93 is the Surfer's first full x-over and fully features the Surfer dragging the Hulk through flames on his surfboard  - it's an awesome cover by Marie Severin.

So I've got to assume the whole cameo vs full appearance thing wasn't such a distinction back in the day.   The cameo's counted for a lot more (shrug)

I need to find one of the price list's I've seen and point this out.   92 wasn't just ore than 93, but whole bunch of big books.   The SS first series wasn't a big deal for a long time price wise, but that's not saying much for the era.

I had quite a few letters published in a variety of books in the seventies. I don't remember them all but thanks to indexers on the internet they come to light now and then and I can usually dive into the comic closet and find them.

It'd be great to make the connection, and see them all these years later.   It's a valuable piece of history.

After the passing of Stan, all the iconic greats of the medium have left us.   This is hobby is nothing, if it's not about history, and it's own history of the people who made it.

  3. Who here focusses on all of the Silver age appearances of the Silver surfer, over just the series?    I'm curious to know how the other Fantastic Four issues rate after, other than 48/49/50, before we get to the series.     There's a lot of issues, in FF, Tales to Astonish, and the FF annual.

Also back in the day, I saw a lot of old catalogues had Tales to Astonish 92 as the 3rd/4th most expensive book for Silver Surfer, after FF 48/49/50.   Does anyone know what the story was?

Check out what they did with Dr. Strange astral projecting himself through the cover of Strange Tales #111!

His second appearance has to be one of the most lack-lustre covers in the whole of the Strange Tales run.    Who ever did the cover for Marvel Collectors Items Classics, thought so too.

One sold on ComicLink yesterday (#188 in 9.8 CPV) congrats if you won. The current ComicLink auction has some very nice Canadian Price Variants ending each night this week, up to including next Tuesday (Some really good ones ending tonight) Prices are all over the place with many below FMV.

Agreed.   It's cheaper buying on Clink, then Ebay.  But outside the endless supplies of Thor 337-339, Spidey 252's, the CPV's re inconsistent on the clink.    Though that just reflects the rarity of these books in top grades.

The pricing is jumping all over the place, I was preparing for the worse, and realistically expected DD 188 to hit close to $600.   There was no carry forward in the auction energy from the previous clink auction on these CPV's.   But that could reflect too many other considerations... e.g. guys already spent their money on other books.   I only walked away with a single book from this auction, so my focus was easy.

  6. The top grade is the top-e grade for each book at this point.   A 9.8 X-men 1 equates to a 9.6 AF15.    Only in the early days of CGC was this a real risk, that buying the top graded book, was just a census updates away from being the 2nd highest graded copy.

That being said, the price floors have been set... except for a 9.8 X-men

Not quite apples with apples, but it shows you what's possible.   The pricing on GI Joe 21, it was red hot when there was only 1-4 9.8's on the census in the early 2,000's.   Priced at north of $2,000, which was viewed as astronomical in the early 2,000's.    Then 2009 rolled around, and the book took off on the census.   BUT the momentum on the nose bleed pricing for this book hasn't slowed at all, as the census is now flooded with 115 9.8 copies.

Several factors may be contributing to the boom. Though the pandemic sidelined in-person conventions and auctions where many expensive collectibles changed hands, sometimes through impulse purchases, more serious buyers had the time and focus to pursue their collections online.

Her might be onto something here.   Unless a big sale happens through a source tracked by GPA etc, then it never really happened.   The market, and the market price remain ignorant, and unaffected by the sale.   As opposed the quick and rapid price escalation we're seeing.

No news, no FOMO buying, and driving prices up (thumbsu

I don't believe the MCU has established any name for its main universe like the comics has with Earth-616, but if we just use that same name for the main MCU continuity until Feige gives us another one then yes, I assume you're right.

What I would like the most is for the TVA to reverse almost everything that happened in Endgame.  That entire movie is a HUGE violation of the sacred timeline.

They do seem to be putting some proper thought into this, but personally I don't know enough about the events in endgame and the current avengers/Thor/Hulk story lines to comment.   But needless to say, the studio is thinking at least three movies ahead at a time.

Well, if you go back to check that thread on the big big $48K sale back in 2016, I bet all of the noobs on the boards at the time (present company excluded of course ) were all saying the exact same thing.

Gotcha.  And rightly so.    This time the payoff is 5 fold, but if $48k didn't move you, then yeah, I've no answers for that.

In order for that to happen, Steve would still have to live a single life in isolation (of other selves). According to what we've seen, the TVA cannot destroy a branch reality that has existed for more than a particular amount of time. For sure, decades exceed their purview.

I think that the MCU would be shooting themselves in the foot if they were to say that the events of Earth-199999 are not the "sacred timeline".

Wouldn't Earth 616 would be the sacred timeline?   The TVA and it's allies are all over the multiverse!! :o

That's the thing.  The last 9.8 MS5 sold five years ago (2016).  And other folks have already expressed their expectation that nowadays 9.8s (of any key issue) are being gobbled up for long-term PCs.  Even if there is another MS5 in 9.8 for sale soon, every one now knows there are only 4 of them.   That alone suggests it will match/top today's yield.  But more importantly, a rational market will have MS5 in 9.8 going for multiples of whatever is fetched by the much more common GSXM1 in 9.8.  Until GSXM1 in 9.8 cools off significantly and goes below $50K, I would expect MS5 in 9.8 to stay at least where it is now.

You can bet every single one of the 39 9.6 owners out there, packed up the wife, the kids, and the car, and they're driving right now to their nearest presser, for a shot at resubbing to hit the jackpot!

It will not stay at 4 out 4,000 books for long (thumbsu
