  1. There's a lot of niches in this hobby that I don't personally understand or collect. That's the beauty of it though, there's something for everybody. -J.
  2. I thought rjrjr summed it up best a little while ago when he described it as some order of title, artist, art/subject, rarity. While all of the books on the list are at least 3 years old, some of them are pushing ten years old, and one of them is 15 years old. You'll notice that those that have held and continue to hold have ALL four traits going for them, hence why I don't believe all 12 of the books on the list will always be on the list, and why I try to update it every quarter. -J.
  3. There is certainly validity to what you're saying. But the difference in the compression of demand may be what makes a book sell for $3000 instead of maybe "just" $1000, we really can't know the answer to that. It only takes two people to get an auction to any final price however. -J.
  4. And his comment was indicative of the demand for all things Star Wars. Fact is, if there is no demand it doesn't matter how "rare" or nice a cover is. People seem to routinely forget that one basic economic principle when it comes to books or a class or Age of books they don't personally like or collect. While that Star Wars cover is not my cup of tea at all, people are obviously still willing to pay up for it, a year+ after it came out. Whether or not the same will be true in another two years when it will be seasoned enough to qualify for this list remains to be seen.... -J.
  5. Nor did I state otherwise. I actually agree with your analysis of how MC can affect grading on a sliding scale based on overall condition. I did say that "eye appeal" is not factored into the structural grade however. Because it isn't. -J.
  6. Any guesses on where this 6.0 ends up ? The ever so slight marvel chipping aside (it does not impact the "eye appeal" in the least IMO), the colours are bright and the cover is very clean and well centered. I'll say $55k-$60k. -J.
  7. For every one guy here who pooh-pooh's a book with a little Marvel chipping, there are probably 20 who will just be happy to own the book at whatever the best grade is that they can afford. Obviously everybody would like to own "the best" of whatever there is out there. But once that one copy is sold, us mere peasants with less discriminating tastes still want to own a copy, so we bid and bid and bid on all of those remaining "inferior" copies until their prices are just as high (or higher) as the one "nicer" copy that you thought you were paying a "premium" for. Thus the simple law of supply and demand ultimately winning out over the entirely subjective notion of "eye appeal" (probably why CGC has not ever publicly factored that into its grading criteria in the first place). -J.
  8. That chipping is very minor. That book will do well. -J.
  9. Is it a variant? It has the identical art it just says "Book Market" on it. Either way I'm familiar with it and haven't seen any sales that would get it anywhere near the Dirty Dozen. -J.
  10. I honestly can't think of a single constructive thing you have ever said. -J.
  11. AF 15 is hot no doubt about it. It is experiencing the price bump that most big time comic book dealers predicted would happen when IH 1 and then SC 4 were seemingly about to threaten its perch atop the S.A. hierarchy. AF 15 has simply re-exerted itself in a big way. Spidey's appearance in the MCU, as well as all of the Spider-Man related spin off movies that have been recently announced probably have something to do with this. But of all the recent GPA highs the book has seen, I actually found this result the most eye popping and telling: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Amazing-Fantasy-15-CGC-Cover-Only-1st-App-of-Spider-Man-1962-Original-/401285159028?hash=item5d6e759874:g:heoAAOSwOgdYubS1 I wonder what a full cover in decent looking shape would go for. $5k? $10k? What would somebody be willing to pay for a nice looking cover only to marry to a complete interior that is also in good shape ? -J.
  12. That Iron Man 512 sale is an outlier. There is nothing before that or since that anywhere near that price for the book. As such its averages will keep it well off the list. The transformers book's sale is noted, but this sale wouldn't be enough to get the book on the list. Unfortunately, it may be a victim of its own extreme niche and rarity. Either way I will add it to the watch list. As for not using public sales, the purpose of the list was never meant to track individual sales or keep a permanent record of that (not even public the public sales), but to rank the tip top of books based on the public sales at the time it's updated. Public sales can be shilled or faked as well, but at least those sales can be scrutinized publicly. I also know of multiple private sales of many of the less frequently available books on the list, including private sales that were publicized on these boards, or deals that transacted between people I know personally. None of those sales are used when compiling the list either. Speaking of which, it's almost time to update this thing again already. -J.
  13. Yeah fortunately we still have just a bit under two years before that becomes a possibility. -J.
  14. It does have to be three years old. And, ygoglak, super high ratio variants would make the list if they warranted it. The exclusion of the ultra high variant ratio books was on the CBSI list I believe. This list will not exclude those books. -J.
  15. Because that would be a whole other can of worms. The sales relied upon have to be readily viewable by the public, or side debates about whether or not a sale really did or did not happen would inevitably erupt. -J.
  16. Hello. I don't see any sales for Iron Man 512 Venom for the amount that you are indicating. The most recent sale I see is for $1200 in February 2017, which is well below the current #12 on the list. If you have a link for that sale, feel free to post it. As to the Transformers book, I am aware of it, but there just aren't enough (or any) public (graded) sales of the book, and strictly private sales of books are not considered. -J.
  17. Dayyyyyuuum. You guys are killing it today.
  18. It is a beauty! Love the detail in the vertebrate in Venom's back. So sick ! -J.
  19. Why not just trade it straight up for a 9.6, TMNT #1? -J.
  20. I follow it fine. I simply find it neither interesting nor entertaining. In fact, all it has done is completely prevent me from engaging with or caring about either the story or the characters within it. This is likely the reason why the show has turned into a total flop in the ratings. Again, there is nothing "new" or "innovative" about this type of narrative construct. In fact, it's been overused to the point of cliche. To the point where even one of the character's practically mocks the show's own cartoonish over reliance on it in one of the early scenes in episode 7 (in the scene in the magic tube). Just one of many reasons why this show sucks. -J.
  21. Since are you making yellow labels again? -J.
  22. I made a statement for why I believed the book has both an ugly "printing defect" as well as a sun fade- by comparing the blues in two side by side scans. Did I ever say that it was a "fact"? No, I did not. The at the end of my post should have been the dead give away that I was expressing an "opinion". However in your zeal to unleash one of your pro forma personal attacks you evidently took it the way you chose to take it. We are ALL just expressing opinions here. Including, CGC, which could very well have incorrectly missed a sun fade as part of an additional "printing defect". That is my thought on what happened, hence why I have now stated three times that I think the book is either in the wrong colour holder, way over graded, or both. Most likely both. -J.
  23. And the typical borderline hyperventilating, personal attack from you (whenever someone dares to remotely disagree with one of your opinions). -J.
