  1. Taken together with the "joke" tweets it just makes the guy looks like he has some weird fixation, normal people don't make "jokes" about things like that, then play dress up, it was too much taken together and Disney was just done. Their brand is more important to them than one weird dude. -J.
  2. And it was more than just "jokes" on Twitter. Subsequent to that, pictures of him at some pedo fetish party surfaced online. Once that happened it was definitely "game over, man" for James Gunn. -J.
  3. That 9.6 sale for $14.5k looks to be pulling up 9.4's now.... -J.
  4. Yeah and there was another 9.6 with "white pages" on the label on Ebay a couple weeks before that which also sold for $10,900: https://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Incredible-Hulk-181-CGC-9-6-WHITE-1st-Wolverine-Nov-1974-Marvel-/263718226054?nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2349624.m43663.l10137&redirect=mobile And another with 9.6 with "ow/w pages" on the label sold for $11.5k a few weeks later: https://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBidsLogin&_trksid=p3750801.m370.h1613&rc=nt&item=183268300606&LH_BIN=1&_pgn=1&item_hash4=6d3c85fe&ul_ref=http%3A%2F%2Frover.ebay.com%2Frover%2F1%2F711-53200-19255-0%2F1%3Fff3%3D4%26campid%3D5335849815%26toolid%3D10034%26customid%3DeBay-US_go-url_-76d1aaf11675--www.watchcount.com-ilu.ihist.183268300606.-_wcc%26mpre%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Foffer.ebay.co.uk%252Fws%252FeBayISAPI.dll%253FViewBidsLogin%2526item%253D183268300606%2526item_hash4%253D6d3c85fe%2526LH_Complete%253D1%2526LH_BIN%253D1%2526_pgn%253D1%2526rc%253Dnt%2526_trksid%253Dp3750801.m370.h1613%26srcrot%3D711-53200-19255-0%26rvr_id%3D1640432512006%26rvr_ts%3D5edfcd931650ac1e1bc38380fffff388&LH_Complete=1&ViewBidsLogin= ...which is $100 more than what the 9.6 with "white pages" on the label sold for last week in Heritage. What does it all mean ? It means nothing. -J.
  5. A 9.6 with "white pages" just sold for "only" $11.4k on heritage a week ago. Why is this copy $4k+ more? Answer: Who knows, but it's obviously not because of the alleged "PQ" on the label. The 9.4 is already $100 more than the 9.4 with "white pages" that also just sold on heritage a week ago. The all time high of $8500 for a 9.4 (so far) did not have "white pages" on the label either. What does that mean? It means nothing, that's what it means, other than that there is NO consistent or quantifiable difference in price based on the so-called "PQ" on the label. -J.
  6. 7. Erm yeah I don't know about that. Movie hype aside, ASM 300 has historically sold for significantly more than BA 12. Going back to 2012 BA 12 topped out at $300 while ASM 300 was $700. It was pretty much the suicide squad movie that put that book on general collectors' radars and caused the book to seriously spike, whereas McFarlane, ASM, anniversary issue, classic cover, etc have always had ASM 300 in demand. Now that Venom has his own solo film I highly doubt BA 12 will ever be within spitting distance of it again in terms of value, despite having half as many 9.8 slabs (and SIGNIFCANTLY less slabs overall). And call me crazy but I don't judge the popularity of a character by how many cosplayers I see at a con. I would not consider those people "general audiences". I judge by what my friend's school aged kids talk about. And they know who all three characters are (Venom, Deadpool, Harley), and I don't think Venom would be tracking as well as it is if it didn't already have a sizable GP awareness already (which it does). It is going to be the #1 movie of the Fall for a reason. -J.
  8. Harley Quinn is a "modern" (or at least whatever the decide comes after the "copper age"). And ASM 300 sells for way more than BA 12 by the way- averages about $600+ more in a 9.8. Venom is more popular than both Harley Quinn and Deadpool by far in comics. As far as general audiences, yeah that's about a push between all three in reality (at best, and I would give the slight edge to Deadpool/Venom if someone put a gun to my head). -J.
  9. Venom v Carage 2 still climbing in advance of the move. This high grade NM raw went for $80. https://www.ebay.com/itm/VENOM-VS-CARNAGE-2-MINT-9-6-1ST-Patrick-MULLIGAN-TOXIN-New-VENOM-MOVIE-CGC-IT-/302825468734?nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2349624.m43663.l10137&redirect=mobile -J.
  10. Damn those are good. I never care if it's "recycled" art, as long as it is not previously published. Art is art. What are these, watercolour? The man could probably make a finger painting look hot. Lol -J.
  11. Thank you kindly! I think I may have caught a bit of that OA bug I've heard so much about. @manetteska Awesome book! Definitely a perfect cover for Dell'otto to homage with his painterly style! -J.
  12. So now we are arbitrarily using the date I stated a thread about 12 different variants as the point of reference? Why? The variants were selling very well long before I started the thread. Hence why I started the thread. So your characterization of the thread as "cheerleading" is disingenuous. Plus, how many Spider-man "cheerleading" threads are there in the SA forum ? I'll give you a hint- a lot. Including a dedicated AF 15 and Spider-Man 1 appreciation threads. Maybe just maybe Spider-Man is really, really popularity. And maybe, just maybe that's why people are waiting to spend top dollar on one of his rarest and hardest to find issues. Maybe ? So if you don't want to start the clock at 2012 and instead start it at 2016 for the analysis, that's fine. But there was another sale of a 9.6 ASM 667 in April 2016 for $3550 (the $4,000 copy you're talking about sold in June). So let's use that, and $3,550 for the baseline (and still use the later $8,000 sale that you used as the "B" sale). Using something similar to your scenarios that would have gotten an: A) 3.5 copy of ASM 1, that would be worth a high of $7200 now (-$800 compared to the 667) B) Two 1.0 copies of ASM 1, that would be worth a combined $6,450 now (-$1,550 compared to the 667) C) Three 0.5 copies of ASM 1 that would be worth a combined $7,050 now (-$950 compared to the 667). So in short, when you take your finger off the scale, one 9.6 copy of the 667 would have easily outperformed the second most historically important book of Marvel's most popular character and one of the top books of the SA (even multiple low grade copies of it). Guess what- the 678 and UXM 510 (and likely Wolverine 1 Deadpool and a few others from the most valuable modern variant list) would have also outperformed as well, in terms of percentage gains, if not outright dollars and cents especially if you start the analysis period at 2012. -J.
  13. Yes I am aware why he used it for your example. What I don't know is why he continued to use it for mine. -J.
  14. You're saying I'm "cherry picking" yet you're cherry picking hulk 181- a book that has literally tripled in value in some grades over the last two months. And why are you now using 2006 as a year for a point of comparison? What's special about that year? Variants weren't anywhere near as big then as they are now. Incentive variants were barely even being introduced then. So sorry, you haven't actually cherry picked "the best available data". That would be ASM 667, 678, UXM 510, etc- The ones that I already mentioned that you conveniently ignored because they evidently don't comport to the arbitrary year of 2006 that you suddenly want to use. So if you're going to cherry pick one of, if not "the" hottest book of the year that's up 300% in two months, (Hulk 181) to make a point about vintage books, how about I get to pick the best representative example from the top modern variants for the counterpoint? I pick ASM 667 Dell'otto (anyone surprised? lol) How would $2800 spent in let's say, 2012 on that book look today (that might have gotten you four copies back then if you could have found them)? -J.
  15. Lots of weird assumptions here. Though I do see your disdain for variants and the variant market is firmly intact. -J.
  16. Because they are two different hobbies and collectibles and most people don't have interest in OA. Same kind of question could be asked- "why buy the original comic when you can spend so much less on a reprint?" Answer to both questions- "Because I want to and I can." -J.
  17. Uh no. You'll notice that the OP in his own words was talking about the Wolverine 1 Deadpool variant from 2010, not the wolverine 145 nabisco variant. He only did his preliminary analysis on that book (the 145) when someone else brought it up. -J.
  18. Well that's the point. @valiantmancompared a modern to a book to a book from the BA. The moderns I mentioned are even more "modern" than wolverine 145. Comparing one of the hottest books in the hobby to a third tier variant from 20 years ago is an unfair handicap. If you're going to compare a top book to examine a return over a certain period of time, pick one of the top variants to do the comparison with. The ones I mentioned are 7-9 years old, give or take. That's more than enough to time to determine a price arc on a modern comic. The point of this thread was to look at the rate of return of them as compared to an old "key". You don't prove anything by picking a dog variant and then saying "see I told you!". I don't think anyone would argue that 99% of variants don't burn out. But then, so do 99% of most comics, period. But If you're going to do an honest analysis you look at the top ones, since it is the performance of those that triggered the thread in the first place. -J.
  19. This is an interesting analysis. But hulk 181 is a top 5 book in the hobby. Wolverine 145 Nabisco is not even a top 50 variant. So let's do this with one of the top 10 variants like ASM 667, 678, Wolverine 1 Campbell/deadpool and/or UXM 510 partial sketch. -J.
  20. I'm offended that you're offended. Hope that doesn't offend you. Lol -J.
  21. I often wonder if any of you making these unsupported and outlandish comments ever once stop to consider how many collectors and readers you are quietly offending. -J.
  22. That should make for a fun thread! You certainly get style points from me for being able to reconsider preconceived notions based on ever changing and evolving market conditions. -J.
