  1. That day you discover you overpaid your CC - and had some room to bid......
  2. -- pressing discussions can always be a can of worms - You did show examples of quick press jobs and show what can be easily seen with an inexperienced presser, so it did add in to the discussion - just not in the way you expected. A good takeaway for you --- is that you may be happy with your presser - but there is a reason the big hitters get the results that they do ( and two of them have posted in this thread). The books you showed, were all improvable ( and improved) with your guy, but two had obvious flaring and one really looked only halfway complete. The pros - would likely have given you at least one more grade bump with the flaring, and maybe more on the TEC that still shows a lot of waves.
  3. The book was submitted to CGC after pressing and it came back 9.0. I think before pressing it probably would have been a 8.5. What Joey is pointing out are the signs of pressing that can be detected that will hurt the grade. A 9.0 is good - but would you rather have a 9.2? Look at your last example (Batman) - looks like more significant flaring. Cost you .5 on that one for sure just for that flare.
  4. battlestar galactia proofs - worth anything? posted in the art section - but probably more of a general question.... Battlestar Galactia Proofs ( Maximum Press) Was contacted by someone with 31 of these- but look only to be print proofs, not original art. No sigs or anything I can see ( though the images are not the best). Are these of any value? - just looking to help the owner, I do not have these in hand, and really am not interested in buying them myself. thanks!

  6. - if you search "Fiala" on CAF - he has unfiltered version posted... - that he posts the NSFW ones he has done for me - but not the others - he has made me a bunch of ( to me anyway) awesome sketches.....
  7. My kids soccer coach is a cop ( her old coach - she is heading off to college in the fall) . Very low key - great guy, great coach. I was bored on the sideline one day - decided to google him for some reason..... https://www.policeone.com/police-heroes/articles/6199620-Why-one-cop-carries-145-rounds-of-ammo-on-the-job/ true hero and brave beyond belief......
  8. My only thought was to post in the comments - "will you guarantee the CGC grades?" --- so then the comparison and pricing can at least be relevant and committed to by the seller.
  9. I think you ( or one of the other gurus) - also posted what can happen with moderns and too much heat - where the inks melt and the book becomes pretty much a flat brick....
  10. CGC did a series of articles on "bad pressing defects" https://www.cgccomics.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?NewsletterNewsArticleID=2547 Links to many of the series at the end of this article. These are great for a visual of what the defects are - and identification of the issues that may be fixable by a proper press.
  11. True - but what Gabe seems to miss is that immediately trying to ask for access to the register in his volunteer "pitch" is a huge mistake. If the owner looks him up online --- the FB posts could easily lead to a "no thank you" (if not an outright no from the start). If he wants to volunteer - he should make his pitch simple and ask if they want another volunteer. Do whatever tasks they have for you. If he asks for anything - he should ( AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS OF VOLUNTEERING) - see if the owner or staff would help him improve his grading technique. That would help him a lot more with comics than register training - and be something attainable without pushing boundaries too fast.
  12. Would you be happy with an 8.5 SS? ( or lower) so many things can happen once you crack the book open - including the grading scale being harsher..... If interested in getting a book signed, why not get a raw one with pressable defects?
  13. But those are existing volunteers that have history with the shop. You are coming in with little relationship and are asking right away to handle the cash drawer.
  14. I did not misunderstand you at all. I made a suggestion with respect to your pitch that would greatly improve your chances. You then did what you always seem to do - ignore sound advice and make up reasons why your way will work. Asking for access to a cash register is a bad idea for your pitch. You gain trust by doing the tasks assigned to you - and work your way up.
  15. Because if you try and be direct - you might scare them off. If they do use volunteers - you need to show interest and see what they have available. Asking for access to the cash register is simply WRONG. You have a very bad habit of over-reaching and over-extending yourself instead of learning the basics.
  16. That is it right there. Do not try and dictate your role - just see if they are interested. You already trying to get on the register would signal all kind of warning flags to any store owner. Let them offer up what they have. You might just be handed a broom/mop for the first several weeks.
  17. While this is not a bad idea - make sure you have reasonable expectations going in. Cash register? - doubtful. Even if they know you well, this is not a reasonable position for a volunteer. Same with customer service. If a shop trusted you as being their face and handling cash ( and had a need for this from the store perspective) - this would be a paid job. If they take you on, you will likely be performing grunt work. Sorting the cheap bins. Moving longboxes. Setting up bags and boards. Things the manager does not want to do themselves - and where free labor makes the most sense.
  18. - especially considering all of the significantly NOT flame retardant comic books on top of them..........
  19. Been picking up some joker covers lately........ this is the latest win (not in hand yet).
