  1. Why not put it on the bay at the same time?

    (shrug)

I can if it wasn't on fb as well because the majority of the groups I'm on wouldn't allow it and would delete the posts.

FB is fine for a few days but E-Bay has a audience of millions where as a group on FB maybe a couple hundred. For a book like ASM 129 CGC 8.0 having it up on E-Bay is your best bet in my opinion.

I agree I'm only keeping it up for this weekend and off to ebay it goes as for a cgc 8.0 asm 129 people don't have too many choices when buying so that gives me the advantage.

True - right now there doesn't look to be a lot of copies floating around. There is one on E-Bay that could probably be had for $900 - $950 with a best offer but the seller has it at $1,100 right now. No similar copies were in the Comic Link auction so hard to tell what the going rate really is right now. I'd suggest putting it up on E-Bay at $1,000 with a Best Offer option and hopefully you will get it sold quickly for $925 - $950.

That would be a good idea but I also have to calculate that I'm going to have also put it higher since I have have to deal with a 14.5% commission on top of that unless I can say to contact me for a better deal and do it on the boards or FB and I can give them 10% discount

There is already a guy sitting holding out for $1,100 so sitting next to him at $1,100 doesn't seem to make much sense. I guess you could go $1,075 and hold steady but recent past sales don't bode well for that path. With quite a few selling in the $850 range I'd be happy with $950 even though you are losing a few bucks because of fees. There is a place to hold out for FMV but holding out for considerably more then FMV you become a long term speculator instead of a flipper. Tons of those on E-Bay - some work out some sit on inventory for years and years.

Yes and no I don't want to start undercutting before I would even get offers and even if I did it wouldn't look good for gpa anyway. So with my copy that would make 4 graded ones and all except offers 1 of them being voldemort's and the other being voldemort 2 that already improves my chances so it would be between me and the guy that has it for 1100 OBO. So that said I'll see what I can put on my listing and get away with.

  2. Why not just list the price you sold the book for instead of putting a negative in front of the price? What does the negative in front of the GS X-Men #1 indicate? What was the selling price?

It means I lost 100% of my money since that comic was a scam

So you paid for the book and the book was never delivered and the seller never refunded your money back?

Unfortunately that's what happened I paid him with a money order and once I realized what happened I tried to use the serial number to get my money back but he already spent it.

And you didn't call the police/RCMP?

    Jim

Oh I did but they said it was too late when I called, he already spent it and they didn't have enough evidence

Yes, Gabe was scammed a few times and got zilch for his money. I think he paid via money order or via friends and family and books never showed.

And yet he never bought that prime swamp land I offered him at a great price

    Haha

  6. Why not just list the price you sold the book for instead of putting a negative in front of the price? What does the negative in front of the GS X-Men #1 indicate? What was the selling price?

    Yup it was money order

  7. The accounting is haphazard to say the least.

    So, for this book:

    Betty and Veronica #320 7.0/7.5 Buy $470usd Sell $250

So, on this book you LOST $220 USD? Is that right?

According to GPA, there was one sale for $283 in 2015, that's it...Why the heck did you pay $470? When did you start using GPA and other sources to determine FMV?

He also had an CGC 8.5 so the buy price could have been for that. Either way he lost money.

Yeah I did have a cgc 8.5 but that's after I got it pressed and cleaned.

You got the B&V 7.0/7.5 pressed and cleaned and then it was an 8.5 is that what you are saying? Or are these two completely separate books?

    Yes I got the B&V 7.0/7/5 pressed and cleaned to a 8.5

That's a lot of effort to expend just to lose $220.00. Just say in'.

Does the buy price of the B&V 7.0 to an 8.5 of $470 USD include the cost of pressing and grading?

    Yes it does

  8. Why not just list the price you sold the book for instead of putting a negative in front of the price? What does the negative in front of the GS X-Men #1 indicate? What was the selling price?

Yeah it was but at that time I needed money and it was one of my better comics so I sold it for a loss.

  10. The accounting is haphazard to say the least.

That would be correct and I started using gpa about a year and a half ago but went without if for a while and I used ebay to determine how much to pay but there weren't many sales.

You're right I should have explained. Anything with a zero is something I still have and anything with a negative sign it front of it is something I lost money on.

Gabe, that doesn't make sense. Anything with a negative sign is something you lost money on?

What about: JLA #1 CGC NG Buy $210usd Sell $115

if you bought it for $210 and sold it for $115, then you lost money, and there is no negative sign. Most of the entries are like this. Only 7 entries have - signs, but all 28 are losses, no?

If you mean what I think you mean then books you lost out completely on should look like this (In Gabe formatting):

    Giant Size X-men #2 2.0 Buy $21.72usd Sell $0

If this is your bookkeeping technique it's amazing that you're not deeper in the hole.

You can't sell something for $-21.72

I'm guessing it is just poor book keeping on his part. I do like the fact that the various Bronze Age books sold for $125 which is exactly the amount he spent but that got a negative.

Use Excel and keep track of how much you bought the books for, what you got for the book, your fees and expenses for the book and you can easily calculate if you made money or lost money on it. Hopefully your losses will be far between from here on out.

It may be confusing how I calculate things but I do understand it and that's why I said you can ask questions

That's because on the FF bronze lot I lost money on it and didn't make anything back so as to not confuse myself I put on negative in front of it and the amount I paid.

  15. I totally agree with chrisco37 .. get several of these types of deals under your belt (and ONLY do these types of deals for a looooooong time) and hopefully you'll start seeing profit.

That makes it sound like forever and maybe hopefully making a profit. I realize I'm not starting in the best of ways but I don't ignore a good deal if it's small if I think I can make money on it I buy it.

It will take a long time, but .. so what? .. you WILL make money. Please don't let this be more sound advice, which you'll choose to ignore.

If that's true why did you make it sound like I "might" make money on it?

.. because the way you handle sales, who can tell? (shrug) Sorry if it sounded hard, but .. what can I say? .. Your track-record hasn't had a trail-blazing success rate.

You need to stop thinking that you can do better than seasoned-Professionals who have been doing this for decades (please don't tell me that you don't think that, otherwise over 3 years (if you had followed advice) you would be hugely in-profit by now.

Do I think I'm better then pros? No not at all and if I followed advice better you can be 100% sure I would have been in a better position then I am now.

You can't sell something for $-21.72

Yes the jla 1 was a loss but I don't want to confuse that by putting a negative sign in front of it but when you do see it it means that I lost money out of pocket or got scammed. The giant size x-men is -21.72 because it got lost somewhere when I moved and since I didn't sell it I put a negative in front of it.

  17. The BA #12

    BA 12 Buy $834.15 Sell $820

Was this one you bought raw and then you didn't agree with the grade? Did you think about pressing that one too? I seem to remember some discussion about that...

Are you also including cost of having books shipped to you in your costs or just the cost of the book itself? Does the resell price take into account the eBay and/or PayPal fees?

The BA12 you see on there was the one I didn't agree with on the grade and yes everything was already calculated into the price including shipping, return shipping, paypal fees and so on.

  18. Yep. Get rid of it and get money back into your pocket.

As others have said (countless times) in this thread, stop trying to hit the big home run. The deals are harder to find on the bigger stuff. Most everyone is going to want at/near top market on those. It's hard to quick flip something you bought at top market.

I did a small, local show yesterday with a buddy. Near the end of it I decided to take a look around the room. I dug thru a few boxes and found the following:

    Aliens #1 (1st print) - $5

    DKR #4 - $10

    Xmen 248 - $5

Not going to be buying a new car with the profits, but I should make a decent return on my $20. These are the kind "flips" we've been trying to encourage you to look for.

You're hoping to break even on your $800+ purchase. I shouldn't have any problem doubling (tripling) my "investment".

I've tried that a couple of times and ran into a few problems

    - If it's online shipping must be cost effective since I usually buy from the states

    - I find something on kijiji people want me to drive for it and they want top dollar not listening to the fact that I can't buy it at that much

    - I found a couple good comics at a shop before and he took out of my hands and said he couldn't sell it for that price because "They're hot" and I knew that of course but it's his fault that he messed up.

I have done that a handful of times and I had great results in most cases but at lot of the times it's misses

I have more profits I made too but I only showed small comics I made profits on

Gabe, did you copy and paste this from a spreadsheet?

The spacing is screwed up and even going through it line by line I still have no idea what some of these entries mean e.g.

    "Giant Size X-men #1 Buy $355.38 Sell $-335.38"

Does this mean you lost $20?

    Or

"Marvel Super Heroes 12 Buy $110usd Sell $0"

Does this mean you've still got it?

There are a lot of nice folk here trying to help, but I'm afraid you don't make it easy . . .

I think you figured it out

I was thinking he got scammed out of a few books so they showed up at zeroes. I don't see the ASM 129 in the list so I assumed he kept the books unsold in another spreadsheet.

Those NG JLA 1 and Bat 4 are killers.

Comics that have a zero in front of them are comics I have yet not sold I only left the infinity gauntlet at a zero because I had a hope I would get them back. Yes The JLA 1 and Bat 4 were terrible purchases
