  1. It's in the 1st post but I think it went for even cheaper than that. As I said when it originally auctioned off, it was a very tightly graded 7.5 IMO and if I had $100K lying around I'd have bought that CBCS 8.5 and tried for a regrade. Someone was smart, saw the opportunity and capitalized on it. Good for them.
  2. Years ago I stuck a piece of tape on a higher grade ASM #129 because I thought it was fun to handle raw books while drinking a gin and tonic. Not so much.
  3. I remember when I first started grading with CGC I was usually off by about 3 whole points.
  4. It's a brilliant idea. Not everyone wants a book in a slab. Not everyone sees a comic as a commodity. If you're a raw collector who doesn't know how to grade and simply want to know what you have it's perfect. It's also perfect for cheaper books that aren't worth grading at $20 or $40 a pop.
  5. Oh, I am aware and I agree with that. However, around the late 60's I believe it is then that we start to see Marvel isolate Spider-man as a character in it's advertisements and things like that. It seems that despite the legacy of the FF, that Spider-man has been groomed over the last 50 years as the corporate symbol. I'd have to go back and check but I'm not so sure about that.
  6. BINGO If you don't choose the right options the search doesn't work. It's a little confusing until you get used to it. Enjoy!
  7. where is the search function? Click on the Magnifying glass at the top right of the forum. That opens up the search function for me.
  8. Apparently there's no way to search the new forum which means we cannot access old topics and this really sucks. Just carefully go through all of the search options in the advance search section. I've made it work.
  9. Many reasons. For one, it would put comic book stores out of business, through which Diamond sells a ton of other stuff. It's never going back to the old way.
  10. I can't imagine the average comic book with female representation getting a free pass in Saudi Arabia unless things have changed drastically over the last 20 years.
  11. That might be true for the vintage titles but there are many kids who are just readers that you don't see buying for investment or resale. They're in my LCS every day buying up new titles, requesting story arcs, buying graphic novels, etc. I didn't notice them earlier because I was so deeply invested in the vintage market but now that I step back I see them. And those readers of today are the same readers that we had back in the 1950's and 1960's. Not in the same volume mind you, as there are many more distractions today but there are simply people who are readers, nonetheless.
  12. it might be a Renaissance. There are many new readers coming in and buying books. And it might be possible that in 20-30 years today's readers are tomorrow's collectors.
  13. I think the acronym 'HTF' should be banned from use for anyone under the age of 40.
  14. The FF used to be the flagship title. I understand nothing is forever but that's the way it was.
  15. Yup. .He was walking around SD a few years ago with cameras following him.
  16. It's really a question of what Paypal is worth to you. They're providing a service. They're allowed to charge for it. If someone feels the 4% is too much to give up then you can either build it into your price or just ask people to mail checks. But if you want the money right away, then that is the cost of the service. And this is the way most big money corporations make their money: They hit up all the people who 'need it now' and force you to pay for it through the services they provide.
  17. It depends on who submitted it. If it was Pedigree, Doug has been known to submit cash / trade as a final value.
  18. Now may be the right time because prices seem to have significantly softened, particularly up through lower mid grade. Of course, you never know; they could soften even more from here. Actually, besides the CC auction in December which had multiple copies (too close in grade IMO) in various grades and with poor eye appeal and page quality which set some low GPA prices, the book seems to have been doing well. I've sold a 5.0 and a 5.5 (former 6.0) for strong money. I'd say just like with all books, the eye appeal, PQ and auction fatigue all play a factor in auction prices.
  19. I've always considered (and still do) FF #1 as the most important SA Marvel. And let's face it, the values of comics are directly related to their movie properties these days. The fact that Marvel lost the movie rights to the FF, that the movies put out stank pretty bad compared to Marvel's efforts AND that Marvel tried to starve out the studios by ending the FF comic run have all hurt the value of FF #1 compared to other keys. But if / when those rights revert back that's all going to change. If someone has spare cash I'd say it's never been a better time to buy a high grade FF #1.
  20. Another way to do it is go the extra step and just request the $ in $US by sending a Paypal money request. Then you are sure it's going to arrive that way.
  21. Is this the thread you were looking for? Yes, I wasn't able to find it possibly because the system was still migrating over old posts. Thanks for the link. That is exactly what I was talking about. It looks like Paypal is slowly changing it's policies on currency conversions and even their employees don't realize it. Legalized theft as far as I'm concerned. Like many banks are able to do without anyone lifting a finger to be able to stop them.
  22. Are you seeing this on every screen, Roy? I only see it on the main pages/topics pages. Once I get into a thread they are gone. Annoying/distracting regardless. Main / Topic pages. Still useless to anyone but a noob who has been here only a few days IMO
