  1. As I said, technically he's on the hook for the book but knowing Bob very well, had he known about the stain up front he'd probably not had bought the book.
  2. Knowing both people reasonably well I can see both sides of the situation here. Bob definitely is one of those picky collectors (and I mean that in a nice way) where he only purchases books that he is happy with in spite of what the number in the top left says or the price. He does pay good money for books he likes. Also, as an aside that I feel is relevant, even after the question was asked in the thread (and answered by Dan) and the seller stated that he didn't think it was a stain, I still felt it was a stain. I was interested in the book myself and didn't engage because I couldn't get away what my eyes saw. The bottom line is that in a case like this where there is any ambiguity the seller needs to proceed with caution as nobody knows what his pet peeves are going to be except for him. It looks like according to the black and white of the agreement, Bob is on the hook for the book. As I said, technically according to the way the story is currently presented, he's in breach at this point. Having said that, I have had plenty of board members in very good standing (upstanding members of the community) either not ship books or just forget about deals and not pay for them. I've given them a free pass at least the first time around because I realize that in those specific cases their intention wasn't to reneg. and in this case, I am not so sure it was Bob's intention to reneg on a deal. To each their own.
  3. Photoshop, girl. It sucks that they can't show real people anymore.
  4. Just bumping an old post after a search on the name kellyssuperheroes These are looking more and more likely to be Dupcack books.
  5. I wish you a great one too! Here you go.
  6. I'm not a club member here because they're not books in my personal collection.
  7. You familiar with Tom Hanks career? Michael Keaton's? I really think this can be good. He's a good actor. Michael Keaton was the laughing stock of Hollywood when his announcement for Batman came along. Jack Nicholas was smart to arrange his deal on that move as a percentage of the take. Very smart man.
  8. What matters is the otherwise grade of the book and the appearance of the date stamp. On a Fine range book (5.5 is a Fine minus) you can introduce large defects without affecting the grade much, if at all. Introduce a 1" rip and it may not affect the grade at all. Introduce a 1" rip in a 9.8 book and it becomes a VF+ (or whatever it becomes). All depends on the grade, the defect and the eye appeal of the book. A neat, clean and relatively small date stamp likely doesn't affect the grade in 9.8 but it might in 9.9/10.0
  9. I like the CC or phone idea because it physically ties you to something rather than just an anonymous email address. It would provide a form of discouragement for someone to come on and just spew anything they wanted. I would also make it more difficult for people to create dozens of shill accounts. YES! It would certainly make mods jobs easier. Isn't that the point of technology? To allow it to work for us?
  10. I remember this being discussed on the Boards, specifically can you get a 9.8 with a date stamp. I know some examples were shown. Here is one I have in 9.8 with a date stamp. http://www.myslabbedcomics.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=11530&GSub=894 I know that you can have a 9.8 with a date stamp. What I don't know is if you can get a 9.9 or a 10.0 That's a question only a grader can answer as I have no experience in that area.

  12. I've never had a warm and fuzzy feeling in my life. Please explain? It's kind of like what the inside of that mask feels like on your face.
  13. Is it true that CGC does not ding a grade for a date stamp? Or is that only true if it is on the back cover? -J. Date stamps will affect the grade. All depends on the otherwise grade of the book and the type of stamp (clear/smudged/small/large/light/dark). I wouldn't it expect it to affect the grade as much in the VF range as I could in the NM range where defects and markings carry a lot more weight.
  14. I agree with all of this. This place has always given me a warm and fuzzy feeling and I want to protect that. Unfortunately, so far we seem to have the best 'system' in place. Every net allows something to slip through. As long as members continue to put in the effort to keep this place on the straight and narrow, it's going to continue to stay straight and narrow (no system is 100%). I've been a proponent of phone verification to join this place for a long time now. It's can probably be applied quite easily and once implemented is trouble free. It would certainly put a dent into dirtbag anonymity in case something every goes really sour.
  15. When it comes to this particular discussion, I don't think most people need three guesses as to who did it I'd like to know.
  16. Dave, was this a 'known' cover or a recent discovery? Do you think there is an earlier Supes cover still out there?
  17. Bob pointed Greg out to me a couple of years ago when I was setting up at US shows and since then I've been fairly vocal about me not wanting to deal with Jortner either. He either heard about how I felt or just didn't show up at my booth but at that show I decided that I wouldn't do business with him. I've spent a few years getting to know Gus / Silver Age Comics from NYC when I see him on the con circuit and while I can't say I know him totally well, Gus strikes me as one of those 'wear it all on your sleeve' type of people and the side of the story that I have heard from him after reading this thread rang more true to me. The gist of from what I remember it is that he handed over much of the reigns to his eBay / online business to Jortner around the time of this thread based on the promise that Jortner would make lots of money (Gus swears to me he had no idea about Jortner's rep at the time) and Jortner, true to form built a pyramid scheme out of Gus' business, borrowing from Peter to pay Paul, etc...mostly, if not all unbeknownst to Gus until it was too late. That's apparently his MO from what I can gather. I've done many deals with Gus since this thread and have never had a problem with Gus in all the years I've dealt with him. He seems to shoot straight, doesn't mind helping me out when I need something and always has something I want to buy. I've even played basketball and went to dinner with the guy. I just don't see him the way this thread portrayed him, even when reading it with an open mind. I'm not vouching that Gus is an angel and a saint. He's a regular Joe like most of us, and people can make their own decisions about him but what I hear about Jortner seems to be consistent and Gus' business suffered greatly (and unfairly in my opinion) because of it. The last time i spoke to Gus, I mentioned I'd post something like this (he didn't ask me to) and I guess there is no better time than now. I genuinely like the fact that SC has changed the face of eBay by bringing new collections to market regularly. I think Brian has a strong business sense (back cover the Price Guide - BRILLIANT IDEA!) and a strong business model and I've even filled a few 'impossible' holes my collection with their books before learning about Jortner but I don't believe Greg has changed his spots. At this point, I actually don't think he can based on what I have heard about him.
  18. Get outta town! Next time we chat you'll have to tell me all about it. I'm always interested in following the history of the books that I'm lucky enough to have in my possession. Not much of a history to tell. I bought it from Greg Reece a few years ago as a personal copy and then sold it last year. It's a great looking copy.
  19. I do remember people talking about how they saw Marvel #1's and Action #1's on convention floor walls....
  20. There is lying and there is lying in a shameful manner (even though all lying is objectively shameful). Lying about illness and disease? There's no way to justify that. That was some shameful lying.
  21. Someone has the whole story. That's the 3rd or 4th page or so in the last year from that story to hit Clink.
  22. Whew, It just does not get any better. What 6 masterpieces Baker rendered here. Love 'em. The 'tennis' cover is my favourite.
