  1. That was the worst 8.5 of the several I have seen Also that sale has nothing to do with the pricing of lower grade copies...they have been moving up for months What did you see on the book that made it the worst 8.5 you've seen? I do realize that there is a distance between 8.5 sales and 6.0 sales (and that lower grades have been trending upward) but they are not exclusive of one another. There is always a relationship between ranges. It's the nature of economics. Either lower grades build a support for higher grades, or higher grades lead the way with lower grades then getting affected. In any case, I wasn't talking about lower grades - I was specifically talking about that price point. Much like with AF #15's, grades surrounding the 7.0 range have been affected, but those further out (4.5/5.0 etc) have not been affected as much.
  2. Nobody has really mentioned the fact that the 8.5 that sold last night looks better than an 8.5 and also looked like it had removable defects. That book probably went crazy for that reason. If that book went to 9.0 would the $30K sale still be a reliable benchmark? A similar thing happened with AF #15 - Clink sold a 7.0 that went for record money about a year ago or so - somewhere around $40K+. The book ended up upgrading to a 7.5 Does that mean the 7.0 was a new benchmark price? Not really, but prices took off anyway. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on B+B 28 - I think it's a terrific book. I'm just a little wary when there is such a huge outlier in a short period of time. That's my
  3. Got a decent piece of Matt Baker OA for sale in case anyone is interetsed.
  4. I've been a long time fan of #89. The cover is terrific, the story is terrific. I sold a CGC 8.0 to a fellow Montreal boardie and have always regretted selling it. Picked up a recent replacement. Will post it when I get it in hand.
  5. I paid $300.00 for my copy 5 years ago. Just mid-grade. Maybe I was ahead of the curve with stupid prices. I bought mine just after seeing yours in person and getting inspired - I think I paid about the same for mine - possibly just a little more. One of my favourite GGA books that I own. It's just terrific. Yup.
  6. Care to elaborate on the "slippery path of pre-code horror.? It's addictive.
  7. I also bumped another thread with some tough GA books in it. Books include decent higher grade copies of All American Men Of War #2 (1st issue) Wonder Woman #96 Low grade copy of Skyman #2 and a Law Against Crime #3 that would certainly grade out as the highest graded copy.
  8. For whatever reason I didn't see this question earlier. No, the colour touch is not marker that bled through. I don't see any bleed through. (thumbs u
  9. As far as childhood memories go, this one is my favourite story to read as a kid. I still find it heartwarming to this day. The quality of Fawcett story telling was relatively good for the era compared to some other publishers who tried to rival DC at the time. I don't remember how I read the story but it must have been one of those Treasury reprints because the story is engraved in my mind.
  10. Early… up to which point, Roy? Just curious as I love Captain Marvel… I don't know exactly which books but I do know the earliest are always in rough shape. Special Edition Comics #1 seems to be more common in higher grades (there's a whopping 65 total graded copies - understand that whopping is relative Because that book was the first book entirely devoted to CM it may have been printed in massive numbers as well due to CM's popularity.) but my old copy had a spine split. Probably the toughest of the bunch is Captain Marvel Adventures. Highest graded CMA is a CGC 5.0 ( ) Total of 32 graded with 16 unrestored and 16 restored. That's shocking when you realize that all 16 unrestored copies are below 5.5.
  11. I know for a fact that it could be restored to a higher grade. I haven't spoken to anyone about removing the resto but I suppose that is an option as well. For books in my personal collection I just don't bother doing anything to sink more money into them but someone else can.
  12. Gang, I am offering my Whiz Comics #1 up for grabs if anyone is interested.
  13. Gang, have a pretty special book up for grabs. Featuring "the world's mightiest mortal", this genuinely is a tough book in any grade. I looked for a few years before finally finding a copy to fill my personal run. There are only 37 books on the census in total with only 15 being Universal and 22 being restored. To compare, Action #1 has 60 graded copies 35 Universal and 25 Restored and Marvel Comics #1 has 55 graded copies with 23 Universal and 32 Restored. For those that don't know (or follow the GA forum discussions), Captain Marvel eventually outsold his competitor Superman by 2 to 1 during the Golden Age of the 1940's until DC put Fawcett out of business with a law suit claiming that he was a copy of Superman. In my opinion nothing could be further from the truth as CM was a being that relied on magic while Supes was an Alien. In any case, it was DC's lawyers that eventually killed the character and not comic sales. Who wouldn't want to be a kid that turned into a Superhero with a magic word? Whiz #1 was considered a mega key alongside Action #1 and Marvel #1 but has in the last few decades faded into obscurity, partly because the character has not been used extensively over the years (this may be due to the Marvel Man lawsuit going on - I haven't really followed the details but I do know the name and rights are being disputed) and also because relatively few copies change hands, making it difficult to create a market for the book. Sorry for the diatribe but since I don't post much any more I had to get that out of me! Because of the cover stock that Fawcett used at the time, most copies of early Fawcett books (Captain Marvel Adventures, Special Edition #1 and Whiz #1) experienced heavy spine wear/splitting along the spine. That is the main reason that those books do not exist in higher grades and even in lower grades, usually exist in pieces. The book was originally graded a CGC 4.0 MP LtOW and I have removed the book from the holder. Restoration includes colour touch, spine splits sealed, tear seals, reinforced. For the life of me I haven't been able to find the old label but it is possible that I turned it in by accident as the book no longer shows up on the census (I don't remember turning it in). I do have pics of the book in the holder thanks to Greg Reece, whom I purchased the book from. A very difficult book to price, because they rarely sell in any grade, I can only offer what little comparative info I have. I know Matt Nelson / Worldwide had a CGC 3.0 Blue Label priced at $10,000 in 2010. I had my eye on that copy at the time but it had a strip of tape sealing the spine from top to bottom. While I was pondering the book it was stolen at a show in NYC about 3 or 4 years ago. These are the only other sales I am aware of from the past 2 years to give you an indication of valuation. CGC 1.0 sale @ $9560 in May 2012. CGC 2.0 sale @ $13,600 in January 2013 (Cover reattached with tape, tape on cover and interior) CGC 6.0 sale @ $176,000 in December 2011. CGC 6.0 EP sale @ $4481 in February 2013 CGC 7.5 EP (trimmed) sale @ $6600 in April 2013 CGC 9.0 sale @ $281,000 in December 2012 I am sure that the book would have graded higher than a CGC 1.0 without the restoration, as the entire book is complete with no pieces missing - there were no pieces added to the book and so likely would have graded in the 1.5/1.8 range with a detached or partially detached cover. For that reason I value the book in the $12,000 range so that is my asking price. Feel free to drop me a PM with any questions or concerns.
  14. I didn't think it was too difficult to see which pages Miller touched and which he didn't. To me there was a distinct difference to Miller's pencils - at least I always thought there was. I was always under the assumption that Janson pencilled 185-190 even as a young teenager. I can also see 179 and 180 although I'd have to look at 172/3 - 181 again to refresh my memory. I am almost positive that Miller pencilled 181, just by the look and feel the panels.
  15. After you get berated for the 100,000th time regarding TAT's that you have no control over, how much empathy would you have? Honestly, thats not my problem. then find another job. It's ok for them to be jaded? I understand that there are unreasonable peopl out there who probably flip out for no reason, but that doesn't mean they should treat everyone the same. If i'm paying you for a job, then do your job, don't act like a jerk because the 5 people before me were jerks. Like I said, I'd just like to sense that they care, maybe then the long delay's wouldn't be so bad. Next time I am in Sarasota, I will tell them to put on a smiley face when you call. Better yet, tell them to stop taking submissions until the TATs are back within reason. (thumbs u That's like asking the chat forums to stop posting until I'm done reading everything I need to get caught up on.
  16. When you say that it tickles my cockleberries.
  17. Masking is just easy to catch because there's no context necessary, so it's an easy strike. I agree that more consistent moderating (and better communication regarding strikes) would better serve this place. Writing up a ticket and not letting the person know why they were ticketed in the first place really doesn't make anything better, which is the entire reason behind law enforcement in the first place.
  18. Partisan. Not one iota. Did you not just see me agree with Buffyfan? Did you not hear me scream "NNNOOOOoooooo!"? Just kidding, Buffy. Can I repeat this post? I love it. LOVE IT! In preference hides the truth which even we can't know.
