  1. I personally think that the lack of images of the book adds to the mystique. We've already had several people (who are more or less trustworthy) come on here to vouch for it being unrestored. Kinda cool if you ask me. I could imagine the first thing someone would say on these boards if they saw it. Dr. Blake or someone would come on here and say something like: "I don't know, the book looks pressed to me. It has that squished look" R.
  2. That book is now owned by the same forumite who I outbid as I own a stunning raw copy. He may want to remain anonymous. I was actually willing to go much higher (make that MUCH higher), but Brian felt it was unnecessary.
  3. GPA shows prices realized for sales that they have recorded. Currently, no ComicLink sales are reported to GPA and GPA also lacks retail sales from many other sources. Therefore, their numbers are incomplete, and collectors preaching them as gospel is inaccurate and misleading. One high profile example of is the sale of Hulk #1 CGC 9.0 with white pages which sold in a recent Mastro auction for $33,378 and was reported to GPA. In March 2005, a Hulk #1 in 9.0 with off-white to white pages (I think it is the same book before the page quality upgrade) was sold by a consignor on ComicLink for $50,000. So, what is it worth? Taking the GPA number only, a collector would conclude that it is only worth $33K. Taking the ComicLink number only, a collector would conclude that it is worth $50K. Knowing what it sold for in both places, a reasonable conclusion is that what it is worth depends on who is looking for the book at the time, the client base of the selling venue, the scarcity of the book, and what the buyer (and underbidder) is willing to spend to obtain it. If you are a seller, what the book is worth will also have to take into account, keeping in mind the above factors as well, the total commissions (buyer + seller) of the selling venue. What the seller nets = what the buyer ultimately pays for the item minus the sum of the buyer and seller commissions retained by the selling venue. There are countless examples of items selling on ComicLink for higher than the GPA numbers or even higher than the book recently sold for in another venue. Of course, there are also examples where a seller is willing to accept less than GPA numbers for a quick sale (or doesn't know that a book can sell for more than their list price) and the astute buyer can obtain a relative "bargain." Alternatively, an uninformed or greedy seller on ComicLink or anywhere else may overprice a book that is not scarce and it is therefore a pitfall for any buyer that is going to resell in the short-term. Josh Nathanson www.comiclink.com Josh is correct here. I sold my DD #7 9.0 on comiclink last year for about $1750 (it sold in 2 days!!) when GP was much less than that. R.
  4. example! Paid OVER $1500 for a JIM #89 in 8.5. Foolkiller picked it up for me from Harry last year at the Javitts when last GP was about $600+ Sorry. make that 2.5 times GPA. OK, close enough to 3 times GPA. R. and you want one in 9.0 or better

  6. Kenny, I'm only going to comment one last time on this subject. I don't worship the guy. In fact I have never been a DC guy and am not that excited about seeing the action #1 though i fully fathom what it represents. I do however know that first impressions make lasting impressions. Remember how we ran Don Rosa out of Dodge a few months ago? What i was trying to show (and i guess didn't) is how forumites look to invite people like Rosa and Anderson, who have experienced things that many of us dream about (Owning Super-grails in hi(ghest) grade, creating the books we read as kids, etc) and then they show up and theare not really respected. Blue on the other hand (Krazy Kat) had a reasonably intelligent discussion about black heros and every one knew he was a shill. Maybe i just got up on the wrong side of the bed. Maybe i need to get some (more..you know...) Maybe this discussion can get back on track. It was just my opinion based on my perception. And everyone's perception is different. I am all for leaving the bad. Discuss.. Have fun gang. Gotta work. R.
  7. With respects to everyone, I have to agree. Over on the WTB forum, one guy is looking for high grade Superman's from 1-300. Check out some of the negative responses there? What is so hard about being civil to people? Oh wait, this is the internet. Silly me. That's what I'm talking about. You don't unleash your inside jokes, innuendo, dirty jokes on someone new. Imagine acting like that at a department store or library or whatever with someone you have met for the first time. Now, greggy on the other hand, he deserves a good kick in the floppy saggies once in a while. But that's just my opinion.
  8. I have to call BS on this. Dave Anderson came over to respond to some posts made by Steve Carey, and in doing so, escalated what should've been a private discussion. Not to be a part of the community. Not to answer questions about the Action #1, nor to post a pic. Both Dave and Steve may have some fantastic books, but this alone doesn't put them on a pedestal, especially since their primary contribution so far has been an argumentative thread about each other's grading, pricing, and personality. The majority of regular posters welcomed Dave despite his initial post and its intent, and have been respectful. Now, your definition of respectful might be different than mine. Mine doesn't include people prostrating themselves because they are the owners of several books that we might wish we had. All Steve and Dave have done is shown that they are tempermental dealers in this industry. You can call all you want. I'm not putting the man on a pedestal. Everyone on here is dying to have guys like this on the boards but many of these people don't have the couth to properly welcome somone. The guy writes a large 1st post in response to what has now become a public debate, and you see posts like this on the first pages to welcome the guy: ughhh try some paragraph breaks Not often you get to see BSDs airing their dirty laundry. I stopped here, can anyone paraphrase Now I like most of the people on these boards, and interact with them often but i got irritated reading this thread. I don't want to pizz anyone off, but I'm entitled to my opinion as you are to yours. I think that when a knowledgable member arrives on these boards, he / she is sometimes treated with less respect than most shills. Don Rosa's brief appearance here comes to mind.
  9. This place is a joke. And it is that way because of the way some things are treated. We have several respectful posts (whether factual or not is up to the reader) by prominant members of the collecting community (one of which probably has several of the most desirable comics on the planet) and the thread is grenaded by a bunch of *spoon* who are looking to get a snicker from a few readers. We drool over these guys' books, wish we could see them and know more about them, and then humiliate them when they come on over. Like hell someone of any REAL importance would want to voice their opinion here. I just got through about half the pages in this thread and got disgusted. I do my fair of joking on here, but I think we way overstepped the line. Take this as you will. I don't give a *spoon*. It just deepens my resolve to stay away from this place. R.
  10. Didn't work my way when you listed books when I was gone Ah, you're just bitter because the Canadian Government wouldn't pay for your Thai hookers. Get over it. Had they done so, you wouldn't be thinking about comics right now.
  11. Thank God. Is there a limit to how many books a forumite can buy? Not on my threads.

  13. Not sure if i agree with you. After reading comics for over 30 years, I can't see a tear happen at the bottom of the spine that looks like a bindery tear. Bindery tears seem to look like they are on an angle while spine splits happen vertically from use. I could be wrong, but if i am then show me and i will admit it. BTW, show me your manufactured 9.8's...
  14. Yes. There are allowed defects in 9.8...small bindery tears, printer (ie. greggy nutsack) creases etc. 9.8 is the cutoff for those type of defects. Of course size does matter....a 1" bindery tear may have a bit of trouble getting a 9.8, but if we're talking a 1mm bt at the spine edge, no problem. R.
  15. Smokin' hot book! One of my fave covers of all time! I saw that book too. Congrats! R.
  16. Also Kudos to Foolkiller for going WAY above and beyond...Thanks

  20. He scanned them in Greece while on vacay. Family is locked up in the hotel while Nikos is at the local Kinko's. How do you say Kinko's in Greek any how? Keenko's?
