Bronze age comics that are heating up on eBay...
GeeksAreMyPeeps replied to PeterPark's topic in Bronze Age Comic Books
What happens in Man Thing 3? First Foolkiller. -
It was about a week before the release of the Deadpool movie.

No, that one was handed out at the booth. There was a setup where you could take pics at a desk with a backdrop that looked like her office, and they handed them out to people there. They probably also gave them out at the Jessica Jones panel and screening, and they may have even been available as freebies in general. It's also a thinner book, which suggests to me it was a mass-produced giveaway.

Copper's Heating/Selling Well on Ebay
GeeksAreMyPeeps replied to fastballspecial's topic in Copper Age Comic Books
Then you need to go squeeze some out. The gold digger books of course. Really though, if you think you have them you'd better go get them. Now. Or I will tell Janet! Although it may be possible that the bidders were the only ones this crazy for this lot and now that one bidder won and has been satisfied the load you have may not make as much of a splash. There is definitely a second person willing to pay a bit less. But will a Third bidder show up to push Bidder Two that high now that Bidder One has his books. Wait, who;s on first? That's why you start the auction at the previous final price. If something is as rare as this seems to be, the runner up may not wait for a deal for another time. -
I added it to my watch list... I figured it wouldn't last long... first graded copy to hit the market I've seen... like I've said before... this book is going to be a monster, black panther is gaining a lot of popularity due to civil war and the new comic series that came out... I had several offers for my raw copy of $600 plus sight unseen... June can't get here soon enough so I can get my 2 copies signed by Campbell and slabbed... So, any opinions on how much I left on the table by not leaving it as an auction-only without a BIN? I seriously didn't think it would pop that soon, but in hindsight, with only 4 graded copies (2 9.6s and 2 9.8s) I probably should have known better. That's why you should have sacked up and done a straight no reserve. Great result for you either way. But I do think people are (over) paying for this book without knowing how rare it really is, and looking for "the next" UXM 510 sketch. Convention books handed out directly to fans have no print run guidelines (yeah, yeah, yeah) and they don't really seem to follow the typical slabbing patterns either. -J. The story about it on Marvel's website describes it as "a very exclusive, very limited spotlight variant cover" that "was printed in an extremely low quantity and distributed for free exclusively to fans that attended the Marvel panels." No actual numbers, true, but if they're honest, then the max number is the number of attendees of those panels. http://marvel.com/news/comics/6859/nycc_09_exclusive_black_panther_1_variant_cover_ 77,000 people attended the NYC Con in 2009. How many of those people attended the Marvel panels? Most likely, a lot. I do believe the book is relatively rare but I don't believe it is as rare as many people seem to believe it is. -J. The number of people that attended the convention is far more than the people that attend panels. Keep in mind a lot of people aren't even there for comics, and once the panel rooms are full, they close it off. The Marvel and DC panel rooms are generally in the larger panel rooms (not the rooms that they do the movie and television stuff in, but the ones in the panel area), and they were only distributed at two panels, according to the article. I would guess about 1000 were distributed, but of course not everyone is going to have a mylar available to immediately protect it, so the number in high grade are going to be significantly less than that probably. Don't know if this info is the same as 2009, but it's something: http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/About/Pros/Speaker-Manual/Panel-Room-AV-Specifications/

I'm not complaining about the sale; just curious. The result paid for the convention ticket where I got the book, the grading free, my CGC membership, and the convention ticket where I submitted it for grading, and I still have a chunk extra. See, people; being interested in diversity in comics (the books were given away at a Marvel panel about diversity at NYCC), pays!

Moderns that are heating up on ebay!

I guess what I thought was a high BIN wasn't so high, and now I'm wondering how much I left on the table by not letting the auction play out: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Panther-1-2009-CGC-9-6-Campbell-Sketch-NYCC-Variant-Low-print-run-RARE-/152049695619? -

With the buzz about the new Black Panther series, I was thinking now might be the time to let my 2009 Sketch Variant cover go. I was a little surprised by some of the recent prices, although I think some of the results are a bit dubious, considering the same image is used. But hey, it's a variant, which means there's a very low print run. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SDCC-2009-Black-Panther-Dark-Reign-1-Variant-Marvel-Comic-Con-J-Scott-Campbell-/311579902225?hash=item488b9c0111%3Am%3Am5dy3YYr7fkasFxf5TDP5-Q&nma=true&si=%252BUQpMSAQLXB%252BUEeAXt6MpDH65K4%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 http://www.ebay.com/itm/SDCC-2009-Black-Panther-Dark-Reign-1-Variant-Marvel-Comic-Con-J-Scott-Campbell-/381572236990?hash=item58d77a46be%3Am%3Am5dy3YYr7fkasFxf5TDP5-Q&nma=true&si=%252BUQpMSAQLXB%252BUEeAXt6MpDH65K4%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 http://www.ebay.com/itm/SDCC-2009-Black-Panther-Dark-Reign-1-Variant-Marvel-Comic-Con-J-Scott-Campbell-/222072390715?hash=item33b48bc43b%3Ag%3ASBgAAOSwud1W~yil&nma=true&si=%252BUQpMSAQLXB%252BUEeAXt6MpDH65K4%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 http://www.ebay.com/itm/SDCC-2009-Black-Panther-Dark-Reign-1-Comic-Con-J-Scott-Campbell-/331804155404?hash=item4d41119e0c%3Ag%3AkpMAAOSwoudW6K3f&nma=true&si=%252BUQpMSAQLXB%252BUEeAXt6MpDH65K4%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 http://www.ebay.com/itm/SDCC-2009-Black-Panther-Dark-Reign-1-Comic-Con-J-Scott-Campbell-/331804144870?hash=item4d411174e6%3Ag%3AkpMAAOSwoudW6K3f&nma=true&si=%252BUQpMSAQLXB%252BUEeAXt6MpDH65K4%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 -

I don't know. People like Campbell covers, but generally they're for more popular books/characters. Are people going to care about a cover for a character that hasn't been popular is 20 years? -

Or at least make a distinction between "depiction" (i.e. how much we see of a character), and "appearance" (i.e. how integral a character is to the story, which is generally what the average comic collector means by the term). -

Based on the images presented, I'd say that there's some misunderstanding of the meaning of "full"; she's fully depicted in 30, but it's still a cameo appearance. -
Pre-Heat Speculation Thread - Get it before it gets HOT

This cover has single handedly held the secondary price of this book down to a point that anyone can still afford a 1st print. http://www.ebay.com/itm/JUSTICE-LEAGUE-40-MOVIE-POSTER-VARIANT-COVER-MAGIC-MIKE-DC-COMIC-BOOK-NEW-1-/401070921148?hash=item5d61b095bc:g:5nkAAOSwFNZWvlR~ They should've had the JLA in Village People outfits, at least it'd be funny and not as creepy Now you know how women feel, looking at the average comic cover. -

It features a different character as Star-Lord. That might account for the reduced demand. ahh, that would entail me reading it. the costume looked pretty similar, so i figured it was the same. and he's supposed to be assuming the name of starlord after quill disappears at some point, so it is semi-related, sort of. I only know that because when GOTG took off, I thought it would be a hot mini as well, since print runs had dropped a bit by then. So I looked it up. But hey, it's a first appearance and the first issue of the first Starlord book. -

The biggest problem with the Punisher is the character is based on a archetype that has it's roots firmly planted in the 1970s. That was the era of the Charles Bronson and Clint Eastwood revenge movies which spawned the Punisher. It looked like Marvel was going to reinvent the character in the 1990s but that fizzled. The character has been on life support every since then. The Netflix appearances will drawn attention to the character, but the Punisher's best days are behind him. Luckily, the aging fanbase remembers the character and his heyday, which is why ASM #129 is so valuable. Punisher's rise and fall are akin to the rise and fall of action hero movies. When Schwarzenegger, Willis, Stallone, Norris, etc. where at their peak, so was the Punisher. When those movies went out of favor, so did the Punisher. Lobo is a one trick character whose best days where when his creator Keith Giffen worked on him. Unfortunately, very few other writers have been able to capture the zeitgeist that made Lobo popular. Lobo works best as an appearance in another heroes title, not in his own title. I never count a character completely out though. The Punisher or Lobo can be made relevant today in the right creator's hands. Personally, I don't think every character can or needs to be an A lister. Marvel and DC Universes work best with a handful of A listers and a bunch of supporting characters (civilians, heroes, and villains.) Lobo was basically satire. A goof on the "grim and gritty" characters of the '90s. Once that was out of style, the joke kinda fell flat. -
