Lots of room indeed, in fact I'm calling the Kirby TOS splash to bust $1,000,000 on auction day. It seems a few serious collectors have taken stock of what's out there in the way of Kirby Cap splashes.... this issue always desirable to comic collectors and I think it's part of what's driving that bidding. Another is that this very attractive splash is released along with the complete set of pages. That seems to push the splash up. It was a factor I believe with the FF2 Kirby Doom splash at HA when the entire story came up (maybe missing 1 page?)Besides your top 10 (thanks) I think there are plenty of other sleepers.

*TOS 39 p 12 = $51k  Not for the aesthetic, page is light on the Ironman, but man o man the first ever appearance. Seems destined to fly well over $100k

*Jim Lee and Scott Williams Uncanny X-Men 274 DPS p 2-3 = $42k Lee's got two in the top ten already  and this one feels like an auction day bloomer.

*Mad #9 Cover Kurtzman = $59k  Yes Virginia there is a field of OA outside the superhero genre. GrapeApe prays for mad money when he sees coolness such as this.

*Judge Dredd #4 Cover Bolland = $48k It's a superb cover and it no doubt will take many more bids on last call day.

*Avengers 1 p 2 Kirby = $33,600 You could've had this page or a hand full of others from issue 1 for around $4k twenty years ago. This one will more than double it's current price by auctions end I'm guessing.

Agree on the Lee/Williams X-MEN DPS. That is a real beaut. I can see that one blowing up in the live session

Anybody watch this today?    Notable sales?    Items to watch for tomorrow?

I noticed the pokemon splash at 52k, and I noticed the Beta mtg starter randomly placed in this auction (seemed out of place).

I knew the Akira cels would go for big money, but I'm mad I missed the Astro Boy lots. Thought they went very cheap.

Might want to look for a coverless copy to replace your interior.  Your cover looks great.  I'd wager you could up the grade to 4.0 - 5.0 Restored copy with a halfway decent coverless copy.

Hadn't thought of that - great idea, thanks!

  4. I've only been collecting since 2001-02, when I stumbled across original art pages on eBay. I bought a Dazzler page w/the FF on it for something like $15. Even at that point, which is now 20 years ago, eBay had tons of great pages. I bought a couple of 80s covers, including a Micronauts New Voyages one, for under $300. I remember being gobsmacked to see Bob Larkin's cover to the Empire Strikes Back Marvel Super Special issue pop up on eBay w/a BIN of $3000, which seemed astronomical to me. I waited 15-20 minutes before deciding to pull the trigger; too late, it was gone. Never seen that one pop up again.

The comic art-l group is where I really started to learn about the hobby, and meeting other collectors. Probably the first conventions I attended to look for comic art were the Big Apple Cons held in the basement of St. Paul the Apostle church on 60th street, back when I was living in the city. just a few short blocks from my apt, I had the chance to see legends like Dave Cockrum in...2002, I think. I wish I had taken the time to talk with Gene Colan, Herb Trimpe, George Tuska and some of the other greats at that show.

It's funny that, even though I started collecting in the 21st century, I feel like the hobby has completely changed. I can't imagine how different it must feel for longtime collectors who have been at it for way longer.

What do you think this page would sell for on Ebay?

Its the origin page from Mark Spector Moon Knight #1 art by Sal Velluto.

No idea what it would sell for, but now is the time to find out, with the series fast approaching. Please post a link here if/when you do, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be interested.

I was looking at sold lots, and this is another one that's kinda a wtf on price... I love Sienk, but that seems excessive for a recreation...

WOW. Beautiful piece, but yeah. Sky-high for a recreation

One result I don't understand along these lines, in my head anyways, is the No Prize 1 cover.    Great Stan/Doc Doom image and it only went for 9k not that long ago?

That's the result in the archives that made me second guess myself lower.

    Any thoughts on that one?

I remember that cover when it went on the auction block. I wanted to go after it but had no funds in my art piggy bank at the time. Just a great image... and published images of Stan are sooo hard to find! Definitely a bargain for the winning bidder...

I both love and admire most of Gil Kane's work, and although he's not usually listed among the greats of the 70's Marvel artists, one can argue that for talent, productivity, and distinctive style, he's right up there.

Love those MTU covers!  One of my favorite titles from my youth.

And if I had any money at the time, I would have bid on this cover as well that was auctioned off recently -- it's a beaut.

Gil Kane and Klaus Janson Giant-Size X-Men #2 Cover Original Art | Lot #91015 | Heritage Auctions

I remember when this was being offered up not too long ago on a dealer's website for what I thought was an outlandish price for a 70s X-Men cover not featuring the new team. Now, given how wild the market has become, that price doesn't seem so outlandish.

The fact that this Secret Wars page sold for so much, probably has a lot to do with historical significance rather than artistic merit.

If a page can sell for over $3 Million, I have a feeling an equally significant cover should do as well if not better, regardless of what it's composed of.

Funny thing is, it's not the first time we saw the black costume. ASM #252 was published first; I would think the cover art to 252, which is a much better image anyway, could go for more than $3.3M.

Biggest surprise of today? Has to be the Golden What If cover, yes? (terrific piece by the way)

Agree with you, Scott. It's an awesome, memorable cover -- one of my favorites from the original What If? run. But that price is bonkers.

I guess Bechara will be bumping up his ask for the What If? #1 cover now :)

The amount of hours and talent Jim put into this endeavor is remarkable. Whether you are a fan or non-fan of his work, I think it's worth taking a moment to highlight the accomplishment and the staggering success Jim achieved. Just amazing.

Raised nearly $900K for comics shops (adding up his sketches + the work of others who contributed to the cause). And not just doing standard head sketches -- so many of the pieces were absolute STUNNERS

I think there's an existing Illustrated Art thread, but I couldn't find it so am starting a new thread out of laziness.

Just wanted to note the sale of the original painting for the cover of Boston's "Don't Look Back" album on Heritage just now for $81,250.

    https://fineart.ha.com/itm/pulp-pulp-like-digests-and-paperback-art/gary-norman-american-20th-century-boston-don-t-look-back-album-cover-1978acrylic-and-airbrush-on-board25-x/a/8030-71060.s?ic2=mybidspage-lotlinks-12202013&tab=MyBids-101116

The estimate was a laughable $5000-7500, which I think was exceeded on the first day of internet bidding.

Makes you wonder how much the OA for the iconic debut album would go for. hm

I knew it would blow away the pre-auction estimate, but that's a strong finish! Love that album cover...

Really? No ego problem there, I see.

Byrne wanted to be left alone to do the story he wanted to do. After C.B. Cebulski first indicated to him that that would be the case, the terms changed. Creative control was what John wanted over the project. Editorial interference is why he left the last X-book he worked on, so he didn't want to go through that again. Big ego? Sure. But lots of creators want to have final say over their stories. I don't blame him at all for walking away from a situation that would have frustrated him.
