You guys who follow me on social media might have seen me posting this over the weekend, but this is a very cool John Byrne Xmen piece I was commissioned to ink that I'd like to share. To be able to feel like I was stepping back in time in my head to 1980, a day of future past if you will (: and ink Byrne's classic take on this characters was a real hoot! I've inked Byrne a few times before, but nothing quite this dense. While I wasn't trying to channel Terry Austin on this, I was trying to give some real polish in my own way. The piece is quite large (17x22), and took far tool long to complete, but I had a good time. For anyone not in the know, Byrne is doing his own run of Xmen stories that start up right where his classic run ended, and I think he's got about 20 issues in the can! Pretty wild. Anyway, here ya go...

I've been trying to think of possible candidates to add to the list.  Does anyone know what any of these might change hands for, if they ever do?

    Howard Chaykin Star Wars
    Gene Colan 60s Avengers
Robert Crumb - Comic Art Tracker has various panel pages that sold for six figures on Heritage
Alan Davis Captain Britain (stories written by Alan Moore)
Alan Davis DR and Quinch (stories written by Alan Moore)
    Michael Golden Micronauts
    Marc Hempel Sandman
Gil Kane Hulk in Tales to Astonish
Gil Kane Cap in Tales of Suspense
    Gil Kane Daredevil
    Jack Kirby Sgt. Fury
    David Mazzucchelli Batman Year One
    Mike McMahon Judge Dredd
Todd McFarlane Batman Year Two in Detective Comics
    Frank Miller Elektra Lives Again
    Spain Rodriguez Trashman etc
    John Romita sr Daredevil
    John Romita Sr 50s Cap
    John Romita Sr 70s Cap
Marie Severin 2up Hulk in Tales to Astonish
Gilbert Shelton Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers etc
    Jim Starlin MOKF
    Jim Steranko Cap
S Clay Wilson Checkererd Demon etc - Comic Art Tracker has various panel gages that sold for between 8k and 52k on Heritage

Chaykin Star Wars pages are next to impossible to find, and if you do, good luck. The collectors who go after them have deep pockets

I'm the buyer on this -- I'm a huge Murphy fan and a huge fan of his MIS run, so I was willing to go up for it, there's not a lot of really good splashes on the market from this title.  I have another splash that isn't as good but I did acquire recently for much less.

congratulations on a GREAT pickup! I was watching it to see where it landed, not because I had a chance in hell of getting it. Such a great splash!

The way Jim is holding the page with his right hand makes me cringe. :(

But hey, it’s his! Wonder what auction would be for the set? New record for sure?

We had a huge amount of sushi on the kitchen island, and at one point, while everyone was ogling the X-Men covers, I grabbed a Cockrum X-Men DPS from the able that was inches away from spilled soy sauce, hahaha (not all heroes wear capes)

Just compared it. Got it now. The published 361 is “iconic”. I remember buying 20 copies of the book. This unpublished version was unknown to me. Never seen the variant.

I may be wrong, but I think it was used for a fairly recent variant.

  6. I came up short on the two pieces I went after, the Sal Cap end page splash and the page from X-Men #110. Prices seemed strong across the board.

The big shocker to me was the Bagley #361 "cover" selling for $62,000. It's not even the published cover for that issue! I know it was released years later as a variant, but still. That just seems nuts to me.

I haven't even had time to read it yet, but if Forbes said it's so, it must be true! (thumbsu

This article falls short, way short, due to the fact the writer used one dealer as the source for his story. That's just...lazy. Sal reps two big time superstars, but to truly get a proper gauge of the market, why not talk to art dealers who sell a variety of OA to get a better sense of the strength of the market?

Missed opportunity to properly assess the current market.

  8. This has been the subject of quite a few threads in an OA Facebook group. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I side with Liefeld on this. If it comes out of a printer, then it's not true original art. Which means I have no interest in it. I like the traditional pencil+ink style, and that's what I like to spend my $$ on.

BUT, I can certainly see the appeal of mono prints for collectors of newer artists who, as a group, seem to be working more digitally. If you like a certain artist, like Pepe Larraz (whose work I enjoy as well), then a print is the only way you're going to own some of his work. I get that.

I also get that newer collectors must have sticker shock when they first enter the OA collecting world, and these specialty mono prints offer a more affordable entry point into the hobby. I'm really curious to see how the secondary market for items like this develops. I haven't paid close attention to any auctions on Clink or Heritage -- have these started to show up there?

Also, I wonder if the reps for some of these digital artists will encourage them to do some pages in the 'old school' style (or at least covers) so they don't leave as much $$ on the table. Just my two cents...

Hi all...I finally got around to posting a pic of my X-men 128 addition from last February's Heritage auction.

    X-men #128 page 3

For those unaware, my 'Comic Art Life Goal' is to put together this book.  This is my 6th page after about 10 years of looking.  So I should be done in about another 20 years. :)

As always, if anyone has any leads on any pages from 128...please let me know!

I also had some of my collection out for a recent Star Wars party which prompted me pulling the two Romita Droids animated covers out into the light of day.

    Droids #2 Cover

    Droids #4 Cover

    Thanks for looking!

Another killer page! putting together a Byrne/Austin X-Men book is quite the 'Life Goal,' and I wish you luck! BTW, those Romita Droid covers are fantastic!
