  1. Not exactly what I would call "near mint". More of a "near miss" on that one. Regrettably, this is NOT surprising.
  2. “Grades” (and I use the term loosely), have been submitted. Hopefully they are better than the grades I received when I was in school.
  3. In all seriousness, this is an AWESOME contest. Sometimes the grades frustrate me and make me go like this.... I think that is part of the fun. If we all agreed on every grade, then there would be no point to having this competition (or even having professional grading). On the wings, I was going like this..... (Thinking 4.0 - 5.0). I went with 4.0 and thus..... JUST FOR THE RECORD - THIS CONTEST RULES AND I AM THANKFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE!
  4. I just wish that on the rare occasion when I send a book into CGC, that it would find its way to the desk of the visually impaired grader that apparently graded that Wings. Or maybe the grader just forgot to look at the back of the book.
  5. Is there a way to enlarge the photo big enough to see the CGC label??? That is what I need.
  6. I too find it sad that SOME of the people, here on the boards, are here simply to make a profit. Not that I am against anyone making a profit, however, I believe these boards can be (and are often) so much more. I think back of all the charity threads started by @skypinkblu and many others. They were not seeking profit or notoriety for themselves; they were just trying to make the boards and the world a better place. That is just the kind of person Sharon and many others are. When I first joined the boards and couldn’t figure out how to post a picture, @Gotham Kid took the time to help me figure it all out. I am sure Peter had better things to do with his time and could have just dismissed me as a “new b”, but he didn’t. He helped a fellow boarder, expecting nothing in return. Then there was that late night PM I received from @Primetime, telling me of an Action 1 that had just come to market and was not yet well publicized. Ben was not looking for a “finder’s fee” (which I would have gladly paid); he was just helping another collector try and fulfill his dream. Even though the seller of that book decided not to sell me the book (at full asking price), I am still grateful to Ben for taking the time to reach out. Shortly after that I received another PM from @eccomic telling me of a B&W copy of If the Devil Would Talk. I had wanted a copy of that book for decades and had just never seen one for sale. Given Overstreet says only 4 copies exist, I was beside myself with excitement when I received this PM. This was a “must have” and thanks to that PM I finally obtained that prize. Again, there was no profit motive involved. It was just one boardie helping another. To be honest, I purchased that book for a lot less than I was willing to pay, so I guess @eccomic could have purchased it and “flipped” it to me for a quick and considerable profit. Thankfully that is not the kind of person he is. I could go on and on about the many kindnesses I have received from fellow board members, however, I do not want this to become a wall of text. I guess I just want people to know that the boards for MANY is still a special place where we take care of one another. I only wish I could repay the many kindnesses I have received There are SOME who are here for profit or other selfish motives, however, I would rather focus on the good ones who are here for the love of comics. Thank you to all those mentioned above and to the many others who have helped me and others in the pursuit of their collecting dreams.
  7. Perhaps by a “little less” than $1,500, he means $39.99.
  8. You are always welcome here and it is always a pleasure to see you make an appearance, my friend.
  9. Shill bidding is a serious problem and probably occurs far more often than people think. When looking at a potential shill bidding situation, I look at who won the auction, their % of bids with that seller, and their number of bid retractions. Although one may never be 100% certain as to whether or not shill bidding is occurring, sometimes the facts lead one to a STRONG belief that a particular seller is not acting in an ethical manner. (For example when they have one "bidder" who has a high percentage of bids with just ONE seller and that "bidder" seems to bid on virtually everything that seller puts up for auction). In cases where the facts lead one to a strong belief that shill bidding has occurred on a particular seller's auction, then I would think ALL of this seller's data should be removed (even if not ALL their sales were shill bid). I think this is the best way to maintain integrity of the data.
  10. @kav often puts all sorts of "goodies" in the background. I remember him putting "taco stands" as background. I have also seem him use "lighters", "pens" and a host of other things. Sometimes even "period" things (like things from the 1960(s) - perhaps a lava lamp or whatever). You never know what to expect from a KAV piece, except of course you can always expect it to be good and always interesting. IMO.
  11. At 25 cents an evening, this could take you awhile, Dave. Just saying.
  12. I would probably spend a small fortune on an Action 1 in hopes of putting it away and treasuring it always. Other than that, I suppose Suspense 3, might also tempt me.
  13. IMO.... As a general “rule of thumb” if you have so much “stuff” that you are compelled to spend money on a storage unit, just to store it all, then you probably have too much stuff. At this point your possessions may have started to possess you. That being said, I agree with the OP and all his fine reasoning. Good post.
  14. This is just such an incredible book. I can't believe Rick let this one go.
