Robot Man

Today I've got some thing pretty cool to show. These are two "bound volumes" from the Terry Toons animation studios. Note the check out stamps on inside front cover. These were all hand made and were to be used for reference in doing the cartoons. They were bound with two holes punched and un-trimmed. Looks like they were rarely used and other than the two holes, beautiful condition. I thought about breaking them up but think historically, they should stay the way they are. First one is Terry Toons #45-60. This volume has the first Heckle and Jeckle as well as several great "infinity" covers. Bright, sharp copies!

Awesome book. Love the colors on the cover. Does that "C" indicate a pedigree? Seems like I have seen that mark before.

I used to buy my new comics at a drug store a few miles from my house. Me and my friends would ride by there everyday and see the bundles dumped out in front on "comic day". We couldn't wait to get out of school to get over there. Then there was the big decision on how to spend the little amount of dough we had. First store I bought "used" comics at was the Book Nook in Pasadena. Not a whole lot but sometimes he would get in some cool stuff. I picked a Supe #9, Submariner #6 and a couple old WDCS from a stack of old Life mags. They were penciled $3.00 on back. I'd never even seen a single digit GA book. The guy wasn't going to sell them to me at first but I whinned and begged until he did. I ending up giving back one of the Disneys because I only had $10. on me. Folklore from the rest of the kids was that he had a ton of this stuff in the basement but we could never get down there. I had dreams of what that basement looked like. The first official real comic book store I went to was Cherokee books in Hollywood. I'm sure you've all heard of it. Blew my mind to see early Golden Age books that I never knew existed and couldn't afford any way. Got a ton of early Marvels and EC's there. Collectors Books was down the street and Bond Street around the corner. Good times! Leonard Brown of Collectors Book store with a "recent" buy (early '60's) check out the bundles wrapped up on the floor! Malcom Willitts in the vault. The store was in an old bank building.

After that incredible load of high grade Atlas, this one should make you shiver. One weird Atlas "annual" some kid tore the covers off about 30 Atlas, EC and DC war comics and made his own custom bound volume. Took me a few days to read it. I got it from Terry Stroud cheap at a con. Everybody wanted to buy it from me but I kept it and gave it a good home. Check out the size of this monster!

Man, what a nice bunch of books. You just don't see them that nice often. Hard to pick a favorite but I would go with the Menace or the Marvel Tales.

The #9 has a special place in my heart. A million years ago when I was a kid. I rode my bike up to the "bad part of town" to a used book store looking for MAD magazines. I didn't find any but out of a stack of old '50's b/w Life magazines, I saw the corner of this book. I was shocked as I'd never seen a GA book let alone a single digit Supe. I poked through the pile and pulled out a couple similar year Disney Comics and Stories and a Submariner #6. All had a light $3.00 penciled on back. I took them up to the owner. At first he wasn't going to sell them to me. (probably thought I had no money). I whinned and begged and finally he sold them to me. I had to put bacl one of the Disneys back because I only had $10. I carefully put them in my back pack and rode home with my prizes. The Supe #9 is the only one I still have. A few years later I got Jerry Seigel to sign it right on the bright yellow cover!

They have a special place in my collection. I give you Submariner #32. Not only is it in pretty low grade but somebody used it for target practice! Today, a request from Mitch and Pat. Yes, I have vintage paperbacks as well. Like pulps, not as many as I used to. I sold both off a while ago and just kept the ones I liked best. So, here you go. Sci-Fi books. My favorite is Ship of Istar. This is the first uncensored version. Next up are some girl art books. Note the Helen of Troy original "uncensored" version. Lastly are some "dope" books. "I was a drug addict" is a true classic!

I love those pulps. Both covers are painted by JW Scott. I've got three original pulp covers by Scott. Here's one... Uncanny Tales (August 1939) Man, thats cool! I remember when you first posted it. I don't even have the mag. One of the best Uncanny Tales covers. Does your wife make you hang it in the garage?

Just glad Stuporbowl and it's crummy halftime show (other than Lenny Kravitz) is over and done with. Can't wait for small ball to start, can't deflate that thing!

What about a really nice coverless copy with the centerfold missing? (and signed by Jerry Robinson)

Question on the Manhunts... They appear to be crime books but they have a very horror feel. Should I file them in my crime box or my horror box? I have #14 with the wild pygmy, hypo, bondage cover in my horror box but I'd like to keep them all together. What do you think?

Nice one Marty! Great cover and colors. These just don't seem to "get the love" nowdays. Always a great read and I've got a lot of them.

I collected quite a bit of pre-code crime during my pre-code horror days. Never came across that title. Didn't even know it existed. VERY cool books!!! The guy had most issues from #2-11. I did get all of them but some are "western crime" and some are "sci-fi crime" These had the best covers. He didn't have #14 which I do have. It is the wildest cover of the run with a little pygmy sitting on a bound girl sticking a hypo into her neck!

Picked this up from Carbo at Terry's Yorba Linda show last week. Finally got it finished and wouldn't you know, it is missing a piece... I bought it with that thought in mind and it was the last one I needed to have the set of these puzzles so I am still very happy.

Flea market finds this weekend! V1#1 1939 Cool nude girl in a tube cover. Has Paul illustrations inside + an ad for the premier issue of MLJ's Blue Ribbon Comics. V1#2 1940 Love the aliens on this cover. Has interior illustrations by Paul and Biro. Also has MLJ comic ads.

Score #2 different guy. Couple of cool pulps for a 5 spot apiece. Well, Robotman scored yesterday morning at the flea market. Got these 4 Manhunts + about 6 other not so exciting GA comics for a 10 spot each! I didn't have any of these in my collection and have been looking for a while. I guess it pays getting up at 4:00 AM, putting on a jacket and driving up there! These are real underrated. In addition to great covers, they have L.B. Cole and Fred Guardenieer stories with good content. #2 Great GGA Electric Chair cover! #4 Been looking for this "surealistic" cover #6 Best cover in the run. This was actually an upgrade for me. #9 Never seen this one before. Very creepy cover!

Love those Sharon. Gotta get me some Banner comics. The only Super Mystery that I want and don't have is that one with the girl on the table with the spikes on fire about to come down on her. I think it is V2#6. There is one that keeps getting relisted in fleebay but the guy wants too much and it has pieces replaced that he isn't disclosing. I'll hold out for a better one.
