The key to this is which ones? Although I have always been primarily a comic collector but have picked up cool pulps as I ran into them. But I have pretty good instincts. Back in the day when everyone was focused on Timely Schomburg covers, I discovered and sought out his Nedor and other publisher work and bought them up while they were “under the radar”. Same thing with Baker, crime books and other WWII publishers. The same applies to pulps. There is much more than Spiceys, Weird Tales, Shudder pulps and known hot covers.
I am always excited to find stuff I never knew existed. There is just so much out there even in the pretty dead genres like Romance, War and yes, even Westerns that most people are unaware of. And now with CGC grading, condition is becoming very important.
I am really enjoying the water and the thrill of discovery all over again.

The only time I ever heard of a mystery box work out was for a co worker. He wasn’t a collector but inherited his dad’s collection. He decided to go to a comic con and purchased a mystery box. The big prize was a Stan Lee autographed book which of course he didn’t get. He did, however get a high grade Black Cat Mystery #50.
He had no idea what it was and was disappointed until I told him what it was worth. He was shocked.
So, it can work out I guess…

I have never used WhatNot so I have no opinion.
I will say it is a “mystery” to me why anyone would buy mystery boxes even more bid on them. The whole premise is for dealers to dump junk and to take advantage of those with a gambling problem. I guess someone might “win” something but the odds are very much stacked in the house’s favor.
I prefer to know exactly what I am spending my money on. I avoid sites like this and IG due to lack of information. Too many shifty situations for me. You get what you pay for…

There were a bunch of them not long ago on a Comic Connect auction along with a bunch of Bobby Blue collection comics.  You can read a bit about him here.

Got an awsome EC today from a great boardie. I never knew there were Al Williamson file copies. I love personal file copies from creators especially EC folks. These boards are the best place around to find books sometimes.

I just received my Weird Science #17 from the Pacole Collection back from CGC today in an updated holder. When I sent it in, I made a request that they add Used in “Parade Of Pleasure “ on the label and supplied them with several pieces of back-up information. I am happy to share that CGC granted my request.
I found this issue to be very difficult to find in nice condition.
There is a 7.0 coming up at auction from Heritage in August from the Roger Hill Collection. Unfortunately, it won’t have the Used in “Parade Of Pleasure” on the label as it was graded previously to my request.

Seems like they are really focused on small overhang tears. Many would actually be considered production faults. If trimming is allowed as blue, I can see some folks trimming their overhangs to avoid the overhang tear stigma…

Nice, and so cheap compared to the comic. And if you had them both in slabs, you wouldn’t know what was or wasn’t inside anyway.

Since I threw this thread off the rails, might as well do it one more time. Courtesy of the boards only @Surfing Alien I give you “The Head of a Traveler”. Every bit as “sicko” as many of its comic book counterparts. So affordable. What would this go for if it were a comic book?…

Robot Man got a reaction from Hibou in CGC graded Pulps - my first experience and results.
Got my last pulp back from my 3/24 submission at WonderCon.
Am actually a little disapointed with this one. My favorite romance pulp and a top 10 favorite pulp in my collection. Apparently, I missed “very slight rust on staples”. Thought they were a bit harsh on overhang tears as well. The few tiny tears on this one look to be bindery flaws not due to handling. I had it pegged at 8.0.
Also notes on the label. I had asked for a Halloween cover mention but that seems to be important to me than most folks. Also, it is a writer file copy. Bought it from David T Alexander and had paperwork with it. Seems, they are being pretty tough on things like this.
A pleasant suprise though. It came in a thinner slab like a comic slab instead of the very thick one my first pulp came in. Much snugger and a perfect fit. Also takes up a lot less storage space. I mentioned it to Matt and he agreed and said they are still working things out.
Still looks nice and I am considering a few more before a lot of pulps surge more in price and up the submission costs.
