My gripe for the day: Sellers who package TOO securely.
Michelangelo replied to FSF's topic in Comics General
i'd rather buy from a seller who over-protects vs. under-protects. when shipping books, I think to myself - what level/amount of packing would make me happiest if this were the book i was receiving. Then - I pack to that standard -
Biggest Regret or Score in the last decade?
Michelangelo replied to WolverineX's topic in Comics General
biggest score was probably replying to a kijiji ad in Toronto about 1.5 years ago - A guy who worked at a comic book store years ago was selling a bunch of books - he had an entire wall filled with short boxes. I was able to pick up a few awesome books very reasonably priced. The gems were 5 ASM 361's for $30 each. 4 came back 9.8, 1 came back 9.6 biggest regret - back when I wanted to buy a BA 12 9.8 (for about $300) and was torn between that book and a Vengeance of Bane 1 CGC 9.8 - with Bane set to appear in the latest batman movie, I opted for the cheaper Bane book (thinking I still had time on the BA). I sort of forgot about the BA 12 for a bit and when I went back for one, realized it was almost twice as expensive. I could buy a CGC 9.8 for $550-600 or a 9.6 for $300-350. I went with a 9.6 - now the 9.8's are $1800+ and I can't fathom spending that much on a modern book when I already have a 9.6 -
Here we go again, potential for a nightmare ebay sale
Michelangelo replied to comicquant's topic in Comics General
I'm not opposed to you offering the buyer $15 as a goodwill-type gesture. Granted, that won't cover all of his costs to get the book reholdered, but let's be real, he isn't getting the book reholdered. He's trying to squeeze a few bucks out of you and I think that's pretty crumby. I don't like doing business with people like that... I'd never give the guy $50; I'd much rather cancel the sale and sell it to someone else (after disclosing in the new listing that there's a scuff on the case) - 95% of buyers won't care about some tiny scuff like that. Collectors are a fickle bunch, but getting hung up on that is nuts. -
Archie #50 CGC 3.5 $600 - Free Shipping SOLD CLOSED
Michelangelo replied to Holmes's topic in Golden/Silver/Bronze Age Only
if first came in the PM, then it's the PM that wins, IMO since the OP said first and didn't specify where. If he said " in the thread trumps PMs" then I'd say it belongs to dem1138 -
I'd be happy to have a JIM 83 in a 7.0 As mentioned above, the piece out is reflected in the grade. Hard to say if your sell price will be lower than other 7.0's. Since the list of possible buyers will undoubtedly be less due to the notation, you may struggle to sell it at full FMV

Part 2 of "How much would you offer for this collection"
Michelangelo replied to Shawnismaximus's topic in Comics General
the OP is lucky the seller didn't accept the $300 offer. -
before you start sending books to CGC, you absolutely need to know how to grade books yourself. Thinking a book is a 9.8 when it's actually a 9.0-9.2 will not make you any money long term after grading fees, shipping and pressing fees. assuming you're selling the books you find: many times a book sold raw will yield a higher roi% than if you sold it slabbed after the grading and pressing fees. thus, know your prices for books sold raw vs. books sold graded

I don't know about safety deposit boxes in the U.S., but in Canada they aren't very large. My mom worked at a large bank for years and I asked her what the largest dimensions were for a box and I recall being able to hold only a handful of raw books and/or maybe 2-3 slabs

Fair price for Hulk 181 CGC 9.8 Off-White pages?
Michelangelo replied to zoom625's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
Sounds like eBay -
I used to think my last submission was awesome until I saw this thread.

for an x-men 94, i'd agree with a 4.0-5.0 however, I think that determining what constitutes as a 'reader copy' may depend on the book in question. I wouldn't want a bronze age reader that was a 1.0, since there are many VG-ish books out there for great prices. with SA or GA keys, 'reader copies' at VG are sometimes worth more than people can afford. I know a few book that I'd consider to be holy grails in VG. Good luck with your hunt

What would you offer on this collection?
Michelangelo replied to Shawnismaximus's topic in Comics General
don't waste your time on this. If it's already a hassle trying to buy overpriced drek, just wait until you have to turn around and sell it. -
Great Title Logos & Awful Title Logos
Michelangelo replied to Get Marwood & I's topic in Comics General
I always loved the early ASM titles with the webbing -
those are some beautiful books too I'll keep my eyes peeled in the local classifieds.

When I saw this I guessed in happened at the Toronto Comic Book Show yesterday. I sincerely hope all is recovered.

to the OP, your stan sig isn't bad and it's in a really good spot. for the record, I don't like the idea of anyone taking a sharpie to a comic book. I have seen books with a blue label receive a sig on the slab, which I think is kinda cool. Plus, if it comes with a COA, even better. If you don't like the sig after a while, get a reholder for $15 or whatever it costs.
-
You likely won't get a great deal at a con if you're buying a big key slabbed book. There's a better chance at getting a good deal buying raw books; because it has yet to be graded and there is that level of uncertainty. In general, I like buying high value books slabbed to eliminate the risk of being burned

PGM Daredevil #1 CT CORNER
Michelangelo replied to Hawaii Jay's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
just above the CT on the splash page... looks like another page was ripped and a small piece was left over. overall (aside from the CT and what looks like a tear), it's a nice SA key. congrats -
