  1. That is a 2011 book, the original series from 1941 ran for 62 issues, I assume that is why this is numbered 63. https://www.mycomicshop.com/search?TID=21803329
  2. According to the grading standards, bindery tears are only mentioned in NM+ 9.6 (No bindery tears are allowed,) and NM 9.4 (Bindery tears must be less than 1/16" on Silver Age and later books), there is no more mention of any bindery tears/spine splits in grades NM- 9.2, VF/NM 9.0, VF 8.0, FN/VF 7.0, the next mention of any vertical corner spine tears is FN 6.0.(There can also be a 1/4" spine split) My interpretation of all of this is that if it is longer than 3/16" it is a spine split, regardless of how it started, the question of course then becomes what exactly is the tape attempting to repair, a spine split, a small piece(s) missing or both?
  3. IMO...VG+ 4.5 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present. 4.5 VERY GOOD+ (VG): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Good but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): Back to Top The average used comic book. Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Cover reflectivity is low. Can have moderate creases or dimples. Corners may be blunted. Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies. Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. Staples may be discolored. Minor to moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple.
  4. IMO...FN- 5.5 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose. 5.5 FINE- (FN-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An above-average but well used comic book. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.
  5. I am not entirely sure how the tape will affect the grade, the tape is attempting to repair a tear, without the tape and defect I would have graded this book in the FN/VF 7.0 range, according to the grading standards (Overstreet/Heritage) tape is not allowed in any grade above VG 4.0, however, books are graded in their entirety, not on one lone defect, giving you the benefit of the doubt, IMO...VG/FN 5.0 VG 4.0 - Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade GD/VG 3.0 - Tape and other amateur repair may be present. GD 2.0 - Tape and other forms of amateur repair are common in Silver Age and older books.
  6. This book seems to be right inline with your other book, the subscription crease is not as bad... IMO...
  7. Blunted corners with color breaking creases, edge wear with color breaking vertical creases along the outer edge, book length color breaking subscription crease, minor to moderate spine wear with color breaking stress lines and color breaking vertical creases, minor to moderate spine roll, minor discoloration of rear cover. According to the grading standards (Overstreet/Heritage) book length creases are not allowed in a any grade above GD/VG 3.0, however, without the subscription crease I would have graded this book in the VG/FN 5.0 range, with the subscription crease, I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assign a grade of...VG- 3.5 to VG 4.0 FN 6.0 - Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. VG/FN 5.0 - Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. VG 4.0 - Can have moderate creases or dimples. GD/VG 3.0 - Can have a book-length crease and/or dimples. GD 2.0 - Book-length creases and dimples may be present.
  8. Books are graded in their entirety, the wording used in the grading standards creates a lot of gray areas and is open to individual interpretation, for future reference, on corners only... NM+ 9.6 - One corner may be almost imperceptibly blunted, but still almost sharp and cut square. NM 9.4 - Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. NM- 9.2 - Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. VF/NM 9.0 - Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted but no creases. VF 8.0 - Cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear beginning to show, possibly including some minute wear at corners. FN/VF 7.0 - Corners may be blunted. FN 6.0 - Blunted corners are more common,
  9. that the other folks are correct and I just being too strict.
  10. With the spine tears at the top, color loss/fraying/discoloration on rear cover... Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple.
  11. The book presents better than a VG 4.0 but with the amount of creasing/spine stress, IMO, it does not meet VG/FN 5.0 standards, so... IMO...VG+ 4.5 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. 12. Due to the large tears... IMO...GD/VG 3.0 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): Back to Top The average used comic book. Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Tape and other amateur repair may be present. Moderate spine roll likely. May have a spine split of anywhere from 1" to 1-1/2". Staples may be rusted or replaced. Minor to moderate staple tears and moderate stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present.
  13. Normally I would have graded this book in the VG/FN 5.0 to FN- 5.5 range, however, with the centerfold being detached at the lower staple... 14. 1)Do the water stains go thru to the interior pages? 2)On the rear cover by the outer edge next to "Kathleen", is that a scratch, crease or tear? Other than blunted corners, color breaking creases at lower right corner, fold/crease along lower outer edge, minor spine wear with a couple of small color breaking spine tick, minor to moderate discoloration/staining on rear cover, and of course the moderate to severe water stains on the rear cover. IMO, the book without water stains is in the FN+ 6.5 to FN/VF 7.0 range, with the water stains, VG/FN 5.0 to FN- 5.5? Possibly someone with the CGC grading guide can tell us how much of a hit books with staining like this will take, AFAIK, if the stain can be removed it would get a Purple Restored Label.
  15. As far as weather to grade or not to grade, this book is always worth grading, low grade raw copies are still selling for $1000.00 or more, a CGC VG+ 4.5 sold for $2800.00 on February 18, a CGC graded GD+ 2.5 sold for $1725.00 on March 10, It all depends on what your plans are for the book. 1)Are you keeping the book or planning to sell? 2)Is the MVS intact? If no, the book will receive a "Qualified" Green Label, if the MVS is intact, as the book sits right now, IMO, it is in the VG+ 4.5 to VG/FN 5.0 range although the staining may keep it on the lower end, VG 4.0? 3)Having the book graded and encapsulated does not provide any additional storage safety, the slabs are not airtight and are not UV protected, they do not provide any additional protection over the use of a Mylite and Acid Free Board and both raw and graded books must be stored in the same environmental conditions to slow down the degrading process, the only advantage of being graded/slabbed is human hands will never touch the book again, is that a good or bad thing? 4)Another alternative, a UV protected comic book frame, you can still remove and touch/read the book if needed and it can be displayed without fear of UV damage. https://www.bcwsupplies.com/comic-book-showcase-silver-uv
  16. I fell for the hype with this being announced on every major news program at the time, had to see what all the hype was about and if what they were saying was true.
  17. Slight stacking curl, color breaking vertical reading crease along top of spine, moderate to severe spine roll, creasing and indentations along front cover, horizonal creases along spine of rear cover, moderately frayed lower left corner of rear cover. The spine roll and creases prevent this book from grading higher, IMO...FN- 5.5 VF 8.0 - An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. Spine is almost completely flat FN/VF 7.0 - Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases. The slightest spine roll may be present FN 6.0 - Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. A minor spine roll is allowed. VG/FN 5.0 - Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed VG 4.0 - . Moderate spine roll may be present

  21. IMO, F.F. 113 is not worth grading, raw books are selling for $5.00 - $15.00 (FN 6.0 - VF 8.0), a CGC NM 9.4 sold for $183.50 while a raw NM 9.4 sold for $77.00, what are the chances of this book being a NM 9.4?
